5. WHAT IS MAJORITY LANGUAGE?
It is the language that’s usually spoken by a majority of
the population in a country or in a region of country.
In a multilingual society, the majority
language is generally considered the high-
status language.
A majority language is the language that
the majority of the people in a given
population uses. In general, the majority
language in the U.S. is English.
6. WHAT IS MINORITY LANGUAGE?
A minority language is a language spoken by a minority of
the population of a territory. Such people are termed
linguistic minorities or language minorities.
A minority language is simply one spoken by less than 50
percent of a population in a given region, state or
country. The key criterion here is the size of the speaker
population within a specific geographic context: an
individual language may be a minority language in one
region or state but a majority language in another.
