Describe it without mentioning its name. In one minute, tell
facts about your chosen animal. You can describe it by
giving answers on the following questions: What does it
look like (size, fur, scales, nose, claws, color, tail)? Is it a
mammal, reptile, amphibian? What does it eat? What eats
it? What kind of habitat does it live in? Does it make a
sound? What survival characteristics does it have (flies,
swims, runs, digs, camouflages, flights). Note: You are not

7. An informative speech is one that one that intends to
educate the audience on a particular topic. It is a type of
speech that uses descriptions, demonstrations, vivid detail,
and definitions to explain a subject, person, or place the
audience wants to understand.
Unlike persuasive speeches, an informative speech relies less
on pathos and more on communicating information. Its
purpose is more on sharing information that: a) increases
audience understanding around a topic, b) provides an
alternative, and/or c) raises awareness.

8. The topics covered in an informative speech should help the
audience to understand a subject better and to remember what
they learned later. The goal of this type of speech isn’t to sway the
audience to the speaker’s point of view. Instead, the details need
to be laid before the audience so that they can make an
educated decision or learn about a subject they are interested in.
College professor lecturing on a specific topic during a class.
Guest speaker presenting information to a group of students
about how to apply for college.
Pastor teaching a class about the meaning behind Holy
Communion in the Christian Church.
Doctor talking to a group about ways to avoid heart disease.
Examples of Informative Speech:
The main goal of an
informative speech
is to provide
enlightenment
regarding a specific
topic the audience
knows nothing
about.
9. You have just been hired by the Teacher Travel Agency as
a travel agent. It is your job to present an informative
speech on a specific travel destination. The goal is to
inform future travelers about this destination and why it is
worthwhile for them to visit. Remember to include
information that will be helpful to prospective travelers:
weather conditions in the country, interesting tourist
attractions, things to do there, places to stay, and
additional information that is necessary for planning a
wonderful vacation.

10. That is surely amazing! I will definitely
visit that destination on my next trip!
11. A definition speech explains the meaning, theory, or philosophy
of a specific topic that the audience likely does not know much
about. The topics may be general, such as a sport, or highly
specific, like a particular person. The main goal of this speech is
to educate the audience so that they understand the main
points regarding this subject.
A descriptive speech creates a vivid picture in a person’s mind
regarding an object, person, animal, or place. An archaeologist
who has discovered a new temple in South America or a
paleontologist who believes they have found a new dinosaur
may use a descriptive speech to inform an interested audience
about their recent discoveries

12. A demonstration speech explains how to do something. If you
have ever sat through a lecture where a teacher explained how
to create a bibliography, then you have heard a demonstration
speech. Like most informative speeches, a how-to speech will
likely use visual examples that show the audience how to move
from step to step through a particular activity.
An explanatory speech might give a description of the state of
a given topic. As an example, consider the types of speeches
that are given at industry conferences. The goal of these
speeches is for the speaker to inform the audience on a
particular part of an industry. It utilize visualizations that give the
audience a visual representation of the particular data or
statistics contained in the speech.

13. Analyze the audience. What can the audience be reasonably
expected to know?
Use appropriate language. What are the norms for speaking style
for the audience?
Explain the importance of the topic. Why should the audience
listen? Will this information improve their lives in some meaningful
way?
Express interest in the subject material. Why should an audience
listen if the speaker seems just as bored as they do?
Show, don't tell. Don't most people learn through doing or seeing?
Be specific. Informative speeches thrive on detail, and dive on
generalities

about a legend that has significantly influenced our world
and or community. Thus, the legend might be a person,
group, movement or event which has influenced the
fields of Education, Business, Science, Art or Music. The
goal is not to outline the life of a person, group,
movement, or event – the goal is to tell the audience how
the legend changed things forever.
