Why do students go
quiet when a professor
asks a question during a
lecture?
Many professors think about only one
scenario, that the student doesn’t know the
answer.
However, there are lots of other reasons.
Here are some of them
Student knows the answer,
but he is not 100% sure!
1
“
In this case, student:
● Is not 100% sure that his answer would be
correct.
● Is not shy at the moment, this means that he is a
perfectionist, who wants to be right and specific
all the time, and hit the questions with precise
and comprehensive answers
● Thus, whenever he feels like he may be wrong, he
prefers not to answer at all.
Sometimes stuff happens!
2
“
● Professors think that students lives rotate around
their classes and nothing else matters.
● Students are ordinary people and they have their
problems in life. That’s why they may not answer
every question during the class!
Students get shy
3
“
● On average 75% of people have a fear of public
speaking.
● When students approach their professors and tell
that they cannot answer in front of the whole
class because they are shy, then the professor
must believe them.
● At the end of the day the professor is not only
supposed to give lectures, but also have some
kind of a specific teacher-learner relationship
with the students.
Bullying
4
“
● Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying
each year.
● Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every
day because of bullying.
● It is possible that student knows the answer and
is eager to participate, but is afraid of
consequences, because when the class is over,
professor doesn’t know what happens when there
are no teachers around.
So how to solve these
problems?
Use Real-Time Polls
Real-time polling solution Swift Polling by ExciteM, has SMS/Web voting
features, as well as collects the feedback of the audience. Real-time
polling eliminates a number of issues, as it is:
● Anonymous
● Interactive
● Real-Time
● Fast, as it lets all the students answer a question in a matter of
seconds
● Easy to use
Thanks!
