DIAGNOSTIC, INSPECTION REMEDIATION SERVICES
During a building’s life the building envelope literally bears the brunt of what nature, and in some cases
people, can throw at it.
BuroHappold advises clients on the best way to ensure a building retains its value, a functional integrity against the elements and the
highest level of safety for the building occupants and the general public. We deliver a comprehensive facade investigation service where
in-depth technical knowledge and experience is effectively combined with a practical, hands on approach.
Our approach will be proactive and collaborative with our Client, Architect and other consultants as well as with the contracting and
construction teams. Team effort will be at the core of our method of working and we will ensure that we maintain good working
relationships with all involved in the project.

BuroHappold Facade Engineering offers a comprehensive range of facade Diagnostic, Inspection and Remediation services tailored to
meet the needs of our clients. Our scope may vary from targeted troubleshooting of particular faults through regular surveys and advice,
to planning of remedial and refurbishment works. Our capabilities include:
• Advice to building owners on options for refurbishing or replacing existing building envelopes.
• Advice related to condition of historic facades to be retained/repaired and technical support in
the liaison with Historic England or local Conservation Officers.
• Investigation of an unexpected fault, leakage or breakage.
• Pre purchase and end of lease surveys.
• Condition surveys as part of an estate’s planned schedule of inspections.
• Pre-contract work, reviewing employer’s design intent documentation.
• Post-contract work, reviewing contractors’technical submittals, witnessing testing, monitoring

Russell is a Director with over 25 years of building engineering experience. He graduated in building
fabric surveying and subsequently completed the Masters Degree in Facade Engineering, which is
run in association with the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT) at Bath University.
Russell has worked on many high profile projects and currently leads the facade diagnostic,
investigation and remediation team at BuroHappold. His broad base of engineering and building
technology knowledge covers many aspects of building envelope appraisal, design, detailing and
system procurement.
Russell also carries out Expert Witness, diagnostic, due diligence, dilapidations and pre-purchase
surveys covering all aspects of the Building Envelope.

buildings incorporate retained masonry facades and a novel twin wall facade system.

the re-cladding of the landmark educational building.

a collection of envelope systems ranging from stainless steel clad curtain walling to natural stone
faced rainscreen cladding panels. Inspection required to assess any existing cladding deficiencies
and to pre-empt any envelope maintenance and longevity issues.

Ana is a MSc Civil Engineer, specialised in Building Construction. After graduating Ana joined a
Building Consultancy company in Porto, Vitor Abrantes Ltd., where she continued to specialise in
building pathology and defects diagnostics for 5 years.
Ana is currently an Associate in the Façades Team of BuroHappold, based in the London office, where
she is regularly engaged in the monitoring of façade installation and in the analysis and advice
related to all types of façade defects.
Ana has worked on many high profile projects and brings to the team excellent design, detailing and
diagnostic skills. Her broad base of engineering and building technology knowledge covers many
aspects of building envelope appraisal, design, detailing and system procurement.
Ana also carries out Expert Witness, diagnostic, due diligence, dilapidations and pre-purchase

Commercial development designed by AHMM Architects that integrates listed constructions and
façades facing Regent Street and New Burlington Street, London. BuroHappold supported the Client
Team by monitoring the compliance of the Façades Contractor with the Employer’s Requirements for
the new façades.
Ana’s involvement started at installation stage and included analysis of all stages of installation of the
unitised system, stick system curtain wall and rainscreen systems and liaised with the Contractor and
Client Teams to resolve façade compliance queries.
30 ST MARY AXE, LONDON, UK

Ana supports the Management Team by inspecting and assessing the condition of the bespoke
curtain walling system of this landmark building with 40 floors, including feedback and specification
of actions to be incorporated in the maintenance regime.
WESTFIELD LONDON AND WESTFIELD STRATFORD CITY, LONDON, UK
Client: Westfield Shopping Towns
BuroHappold provides Façade Consultancy Services to both Shopping Centres in London: Westfield
London (Shephard’s Bush) and Westfield Stratford City, namely a four year programme of inspections
of the cladding systems facing public areas.
Ana is leading the programme of yearly inspections and provides feedback of actions to be
incorporated in the maintenance regime.
APPLETON TOWER, EDINBURGH,UK

BuroHappold has been involved in the refurbishment of this iconic tower in Edinburgh since the
initial feasibility analysis by the Client. Works include the complete replacement of the building
envelope above level 3 and alteration of low level cladding such as main entrances.
Ana’s role was to review the detailed design by the Façades Contractor for compliance with
Employer’s Requirements, carry out factory inspections to monitor fabrication and provide

WHITELEY’S, LONDON, UK

Mixed use development that will integrate the listed façades of the Whiteley’s building in Bayswater,
London.
Ana’s role is to provide specialist façade advice in relation to the condition of the historic façades and
assist the Client in the dialogue with the Planning Authorities and Historic England. This includes
inspecting the existing fabric and support the procurement of specialist opening-up investigations
and testing.

Ana was the façade engineer that integrated the multi-disciplinary design team to develop what was
the largest public regeneration project in Portugal at the time. Ana supported the architect in the
development of the details and specification for the refurbishment of the facade.

Ana inspected and specified the remedial works for façades and roof of this landmark reinforced
concrete building that opened in 2004 as part of the works for“Porto European Capital of Culture”.

Giorgia is an MSc Architectural Engineer, specialising in Building Construction. While at University,
Giorgia started studying the effects of earthquakes on historical buildings and developed a strong
passion for restoration projects.
After graduating, Giorgia joined a local architectural practice, engaged in the reconstruction of
buildings damaged by earthquakes and the course of Building Restoration and Retrofit at the
University of L’Aquila (Italy), as a teaching assistant to further specialise in historic building pathology.
Giorgia then moved to Laing O’Rourke to assume the role of façade package co-ordinator, where
she worked for 2 years. This allowed her to develop a deeper understanding of modern façade
construction techniques and work on high profile projects such as the Imperial College project in
White City, London.
Giorgia is currently a Consultant in the Façades Team of Buro Happold, based in the London office,
where she is engaged in façade diagnostic, inspection and remediation. Her knowledge and
experience encompass construction methods of different periods and are key to provide advice on
façade investigation and defect diagnosis, as well as monitoring of façade installation and repairs.

Giorgia is focusing on specialist advice related to the historic retained façades and joined the
project team in a critical phase of intrusive façade investigations and development of technical
documentation to identify the works to be included in the Listed Building Consent application.

THE BRUNEL BUILDING, LONDON, UK
Client: Derwent London
Architect: Fletcher Priest
Giorgia was the Façade Design Co-ordinator for the project, consisting in a sixteen storey- high
office tower in Paddington, London. During her involvement, she managed the £14 million package
design, along with the project design leader, and co-ordinated the development of the main system
design, characterised by unitised curtain wall elements interfacing a distinctive external steel diagrid.
She reviewed and approved technical documents for construction, verifying compliance with
specifications and enabling co-ordination with all parties involved (architects, façade/steel
specialists, structural engineers, MEP, client’s, consultants).

Giorgia managed the façade package of the building from system design to handover. She led the
design process by co-ordinating sub-contractors’activities and assisted the construction phase by
offering valid assistance to both the project Design Leader and the Construction manager during
pre-construction/installation works.
Giorgia monitored procurement as well as manufacture processes, attended factory inspections and
performance testing to ensure quality standards were met.

AGGREGATI SANT’ELIA ONNA, L’AQUILA, ITALY
Client: Comune di L’Aquila
Architect: Amedeo Marchetti Architetto
Giorgia worked on the survey and retrofit project of two major residential complexes in the
historic centres of Sant’Elia and Onna in Italy. The aggregates were severely damaged by the 2009
earthquake which affected most of the buildings in the area.
CHIESA DI SANT.MA ADDOLORATA (THESIS), L’AQUILA, ITALY
Giorgia has worked for one year on a thesis project involving the restoration of a stone masonry
building of the XVI Century. Her advice involved detailed condition surveys, analysis of material
defects and pathologies repair strategies. She also developed a proposal for reinforcement of the
existing structure, as well as for optimisation and re-use of the internal space.
