A diary for the process of the production stage on the Smile advertisement

1. SCENE 1: TUESDAY, 11TH
JANUARY2022
Beginningfilming,itwasquite asuddenandunexpectedstart.Startingaroundthe time,11:50 in the
morningwitha cast whowere onlyfoundthe yesterdayluckilyitwasn’ttoomuchhassle getting
everythingcompletehavingall shotswithinthe nexthour.
The stars beingTravisYoung alongside DevonHuntandOwenBates,a tripodwasbroughtout as
well asthe camera for the use of keeping steadyshotalthoughforafew I had tohandholdthe
camera to filmwhatwenton froma higherangle.
Startingoff,
I allowedthe two,DevonandOwen,toimprovisetheirconversationsoitappearedmore genuine
for the shot.Plus,I’mnotplanningonkeepingthe audioeithersowhatevertheyweretotalkabout
it wouldn’thave made itintothe final cut.Thatbeing,Sunderlandfootballand Fortnite.

2. I originallyhaditinmindtorecord himbeinginfront allowingthe cameratocapture hisface hence
the close-upshot.Anissue came withthatthough, withaboutfourretakesI struggledtokeepup
withhimleadingtohim continuously walkingpastme.So,fromthere,Imust do withthe shotbeing
filmedfrombehindhim.
SCENE 2+3: THURSDAY, 13th
JANUARY2022
Supposedtohave hadJamie Meeksscene filmed onTuesdayfollowing Jaycie Kipling'sscene done
and dustedthe followingWednesday,yesterday,ittookme to getthroughthere,alreadytofilm
witha tripodand the camera at handto realise,Ileantouta dodgycamera. The SD card wouldn’t
workwiththe device stoppingme fromcapturingfootage.
But from14:15 to 16:30 all the footage neededwasfinallytakenthe verysame day. Starting
backwards, the secondhalf of Jamies scene hadbegungettingall the outdoorfootage together
before headingindoorstofilmallowingothercastmemberJaycie totidy hersittingroomandget
readyfor the firsthalf of Jamiesscene to be acted out.AnotherreasonbeingJamie hadworkat five
so had to gethimout the wayfirstso he couldleave.
Somethingfunnythathappenedwhichtookafew retakesforusto realise leadingtomore retakes,
Before thisangle,the one before wasof the charactersfeetshowinghimchasingafootball.Thenwe
movedontothe nextshot,and he decidedtoholdthe ball.We re-didthisthree timestill we realised
that originallyhe waskickingthe ball.Findingitfunny,Igave Jamie the choice.Thatbeingwe could
eitherredothe first shot, sohe isn’tseenkickingthe ball,all we seeare hisfeetwalkingalong.Orwe
couldfilmagainwhatwe justmessedupon butthistime withhimkickingthe ball continuingfrom
the firstshot.He chose the secondoption.

3. Finishingoff forthe day, Jaycie’sshots were filmedbutthistime inthe ordertheywill endupplaced
on the video whenitcomestoediting.Same again,atripodwasin use for bothpeople withthe
same reasonbeingaftersteadyshotssothe videoonce complete doesn’tlookmessy.Althougha
fewshotswere neededwithout,half the reasonbeingtofollowJamie ashe runsaboutthe second
beingtoget a floorlevel shotof the on-screencharacter.
Alreadyhavingitinmindtohave Jaycie’scollege bookletsbe usedaspropsfor her part,
It was herideato findanemptysheetof paperand draw up a random equationfollowedby
anythingthatlinkedtohercourse helpingthe footage lookasif she isattemptingthe work.Which

SCENE 4: WEDNESDAY,19TH
JANUARY2022
Settingupfor thispart of the project,reallyitstartedTuesdaybutonce cameras startedrollingit
was pastmidnightsotechnicallythe scene begunthe date asmentioned. Andonce again,the same
equipmentwasinuse includingboththe SLRcamera andtripod as well asa few additional props.
Again,as well,the tripodwasn’tinuse foreveryshot.Some shotsthe camerarestedonthe desk
witha fewothersbeinghandheldwhere the tripodwouldn’thave beenabletosit.That beingonmy
bed.
Beinga messy scene,adrawinghadto be chosenassacrifice to the endingof itpossibly getting
destroyed mid-filming,bythe endthough, unexpectedly,the image itself wasn’tdestroyed.

Drawingusedforproduction,originallyonlyledandinkwasusedtocreate the image but forfilming
colourwas addedallowingthe actortoappear more engagedwiththe task.The image onthe left
was before the camerabeganrecordingwhilstthe one onthe rightishow it looksnow once all the
shotsneededhadbeengathered.Asyoucanprobablysee,afew dotsof chocolate milkgotonto the
picture butnot enoughtodestroythe drawingitself whichis honestlywhatIbelievedwasgoingto
happenbythe endof filming.
Once selected,actorKeilanRamsdenhadtogetintoa change of clothesreadyforthe final splash.
Firsta change of pants wasput inplace puttingon a pairthat don’treallyfitanymore sowe had no
issue possiblyruiningthem.
Aftera momentof filming fromthere,Keilanrequestedachange inshirtsfindingaspare that didn’t
fitso well either.Beinggranted,thiscausedforarestartin shooting, givingme more videos togo
throughwithoutthe issue of eitheralackof footage ora noticeable andcompletely randomchange
lookingoutof place.
Takinga fewtrial shots,the bottle filledwithchocolate milkwassealedtightlywhilstKeilangota
feel forknockingthe drinkoverwiththe intentionsof makingthe ‘accident’visiblylooklikean
accidentas well asfeel like one forthe involvedmemberreducingthe awkwardnessof needingthe
drinkto spill.

5. Once he succeededinthe act,the cap was loosenedreadyforthe final shotleadingtoa few
capturedbloopersof the bottle notco-operatingas ina few clipsitwouldn’tevenknockoverasfor
othersthe liddidn’tevenremove itself causingonlyasmall leakwhenIwasaftera bigspillage.
Finallysucceeding, amesswascreatedwhichwe knew wasboundtohappen.Luckilythough,it
didn’ttake toomuch to clean up, so the stain wasn’tat all permanent. Aswell asthe factmyroom
isn’tstucksmellingoff the drinknoweither,the riskwasa winforthat.
Afterrearranginga fewthingsaswell asanotherwardrobe change,thistime fittinginwiththe
video,we movedontothe secondhalf of the scene havingKeilanplayonthe Xbox (GrandTheftAuto
5: Story mode) whilstwearingthe headsetlookingasif he wasplayingoralone justtalkingto
someone followedbyafewsmiles.Tocreate thispart, frombehindthe cameraI had to talkto him
as if we were havingsomewhatanormal conversationsobythe final cutit wouldappearhe’s
chattingto someone onlinewhohasassistedincheeringhimup. Luckily,Idon’treallyneedany
capturedaudiofrom the shots socan easilymute the clipsallowingthe characterto lookas if he’s
talkingtosomeone overthe gamingsystem.
Wantingto experimentwithanglesforKeilan'sscene ashe games, Imade anotheraccidentnot
noticingassoon as I probablyshould have.

6. The tripodwas inframe.I recordedfromthisangle three times,the thirdtime wasthe onlyclip
withoutthe tripodasI noticedwhilstfilmingthe second.Notbeingtoomuchof a problem, justfind
the slipupa little funnyasitshouldhave beenobvious.
