Smile Campaign: Evaluation
Havingto put togetheravideothatworksin advertisingthe charity,Mind,myinitialintentionswere
to share awarenessonmental healthandissuesyoungpeople gothrough,focusingmore on
stressful situationsthananythingother.Todothis,there wouldbe twochaptersinone,givingtime
to showa range of people intheirownsituationsavoidingthe use of repetitionsoplentycanrelate.
In the firsthalf,byjumpingbetweendifferentpeople,theyare all foundstressedfordifferent
reasons.Thenas the advertisementcarriesonplayinggettingtothe secondhalf,those same people
have beencheeredup.Again,bydifferentcausesgivingthe audience more of achance to relate.
Hopingto showas well thatall ittakesreallyisa smile foronesmoodto brightenup.
Travelingthroughthisdocument,all will be discussedinthe ordereachscene playsout.Startingoff
withthe veryfirstclipto playafterthe one secondtime consumptioncausedbythe fade towhite
effectplacedpurposelyonthe following, openingshot...
Clip one (0:01 - 0:05)
Beingan unexpecteddayof filming,the casthad onlybecome official the daybefore withtrouble on
arrangements.Tryingtomake itearlyWednesday,itendedupbeingearlyTuesdayinsteadwhich
workeda lotbetterforme alreadyhavingplanstofilmelsewhere onthatsame Wednesday.
Discussingbetweenthem,Iallowedthe three includedtodecide amongthemselveswhowouldbe
the one the videowasfocusingonforthere part as I wasn'tafteranyone inparticular.Knowing
some formof headphoneswasapropto be included,the one castmemberwhohadinhanda pair
of earpods wasthe one we wentwith.TravisYoung.
Before shooting,IhadthemsigntheirconsentformswhilstIheadedtothe electricianoffice to
gatherthe equipmentneeded.Thatbeingatrip allowingsteadyshotsandof course,anSLR camera
as I alreadyhadthe SD card ready.
Havinginmindto do the scene outside yetstill oncampus,acorner wasfoundneara wall sothe
camera couldfocusmostlyonthemnot wantingtodraw attentionnorcatch any stragglerswho
didn'tconsentto beingapartof the shots.
Readyto beginfilming,Ihadthe two (DevonandOwen) standfacingeachotherto show they
weren'tgivingTravisanynotice,close enoughhavingthe scene looknatural butenoughspace the
camera couldstill see the maincharacter.Addingtothe scene beingmade toappearnatural,the
twowho were chattingoncamera were givenonlyone instruction.Andthatwasto improvise.No
scriptwas given,notopicto leantowards,nonothing.Sotheydidas I requested,anditworked.
Movingon, I originallyhaditinmindtouse highanglesforthe shots relatedtothe firstsequence so
the camera itself islookingdownonthe character of focus.Thengettingto the second,low camera
angleslookingupatthe same charactersas theycheerup. By this,itwouldsymbolise how the focus
character ispersonallyinthe situationswe asthe audience are seeingthemin.
But whenitcame to filming,the tripodwastoo small tocapture the angle I wasafter.Holdingthe
camera wasan option,thingwasI didn'ttrust that the shotwouldresulthow Iwanteditto due to
shakyhandsthat wouldgive shakyfootage.Sotostill getthe shotdone,I hadto make do withwhat
I couldget usingthe tripod.
As itcame to editing,Iwantedthe coloursandlightingof the shotstohelpinreferencingthe mood
of the central character.So from thisclipuptill the lastin the firstsequence,the tint,temperature,
saturationandvibrance toolswere all modifiedhavingeveryclipthe effectsare ongloomier.
Originally,itwasonlythe tintandtemperature until feedbackwasreceivedonthe preview
screeningasI had beengiventhe same suggestionIhadalreadyintended.Turnsthey,theydidn't
notice the difference inthe sequence.Sogoingback,Itamperedwithadditionaltoolsinattemptsto
make it slightlymore obvious.
Clip two (0:06 - 0:07)
Wantingto capture a differentperspective of the scene,Ithenmovedtothe leftof the three.Just
thistime,itwas clearwhothe camera was focusinguponaspointingdirectlyatTravishe wasthe
onlyone inthe frame goingfrom a three shotto a one shot.Endingthe scene,the frame continued
to zoomin onhim.
My intentionfromthiswasmainlyjusttocapture the charactersfacial expression,standinghimout
fromthe othertwo.Hishair kindof got in the wayof that a bit,but still itaddsontoTravis' character
inthe advertisement.Iwouldmuchprefertohave a longervideoof this,butitdidn'tworkout. To
record,I handheldthe camerato geta higherview whichleadtoan unpleasantlymessyshotwith
the camera shaking.Itwas evenworse whenitcame tozoominginon the character.

1 - Holding the camera myself definitelydoesn't result in the best footage. Especiallywhen it's steady recordings I am
wanting to use.
Since I haven'tactuallyexplainedyet,bythisscene the focuscharacter(asmentioned) feelsleftout,
with the two he isn't in the greatest of moods. Being stuck in the situation, all he can do is waitit out.
Maybe notstuck,reallyitdepends onhow the audience seesitasitis a commonspot to be in.Third
wheelingafriendshipthatis,prettymuchfeelingcompletelyignoredandleftout.Aseasyas itcould
be just towalkoff,not everyone doesit.Again,aslongas the message of the advertisementgetsout
thenthe audience cansee ithowevertheylike.
Clip three (0:08 - 0:14)
For thisscene,myaimwas to have the character appearannoyeddue toan argumentgoingon in
the nextroom.Sat on hisphone,the actor wouldreactby storming outthe house inthe end.
Notusingthe tripodfor thisshot,I probablyshouldhave tookashot or twousingthe equipmentas
insteadIendedupusingthe table insteadtolaythe device onwhilsttiltingitupwardsslightly
otherwise all thatcouldhave beencaughtwouldhave beenthe actorslegs.
Gettingontothe nextscene now,itdidtake plentytofinallywrapthe shotup as multiple re-take
were needed.Issuesrangedbetweenthe castmembernotpullingthe rightfacial expression,not
standinghimselfuphowIwantedhimto, hisposture differing,therewasevenmomentsof laughter
bursting out mid recording. Even with it taking a while, the filming process was still fun to be apart of.

2 - Playing the video inserted here, you will find the actor being instructed on his role. Giving him a scenario as to why he
could be annoyed, a lot of giggles, posture corrections, all fun. Well not so much fun in the next recording as he got told off.

3 - I wasn't going to bother including this video at first, but since I had just mentioned it, why not include it. As dramatic as
he can be, it was slightlydifficult getting the action right as he enough into it. So it took another to step up and get him to
do it how I requested. I must apologise as well for the use of language in both the inserted footage.

4 - Being a blooper, it started off alright. Till he burst out laughing causing us having to re-shoot once again.
Making dowithwhat footage wasgathered,Ibelieve alittle more couldhave beenputintothe start
of the scene asreally all the audience seesisthe guylookingathisphone,pull aface thengetup
and walkout.Lookingback at it,he couldhave lookedslightlymore irritatedwhilstlookingathis
phone.Rubbedhisforeheadmaybe.A few extrareactions.
In the final outcome,the scene issilentasyou'll probablyknow.Whilstplanningthatsequence,I
was hopingtohave an audiofile toinclude of acouple arguing.Requestingitof twoto voice record
themselvesandsenditovertome,it tookweeksafterweeksof askingforthemtogetit done.
Constantlyforgetting,theybecame unreliable soIwentaheadandaskedanothercouple agreedto
do it.But again,theynevergotroundto doingit so I endedupneverreceivingthatfile andhave had
to do without.Ididthinkaswell duringthe preview Iwouldgetacommentfromsomeone onitas
maybe the shotdidn'tmake sense,butsurprisinglytherewaszerocomments.
Clip four (0:14 - 0:15)
Beingfromthe same clip,I attemptedacontinuityeditingstyledsequence forthe scene.Thatagain,
I believedwouldhave beenanissue gettingbythe audience,butagainthere,Ididn't.Wantingtoget
it as smoothlyasI could,myfirstgo at it had the scenescutbetweenfootsteps.Asone footlanded,
the videoignoredthe nextfootlandingmovingstraightontothe same footlanding.Itwastoorough
and quick,didn'tworkat all.
Fixingit,clipthree endsonJamie landingonrightfoot.Thenaswe get to clipfour,(thisclip),we see
himlandon the same foot movingoff withthe rightbuttwostepsaheadfrom the last.
Clip five (0:15 - 0:16)
Doingthe same again,thistime roundI actuallyhad to inserta differentcliptofinishoff the scene.
Thiswas due to inthe firstclipbeingedited,itendedwiththe characterjustleavingroom.Whereas
inthe additionshot,he opensthe doorthenclosesitbehindhimwalkingoutthe house.
Withthat beingto differentshots,whatwasdifficulttoovercome wasthe cameraspositionasits
differentineachshot.I wouldprefertohave hadit run a lotsmoother,butthere isn'tmuch I can do
to fix thatnow nothavingthe time to go back andre-shoot.
Clip six (0:16 - 0:17)
Closingthe door,I hadto trim betweenhimopeningthe doorandclosingitas it wouldhave dragged
leavinginthe whole durationof the saidactionhappening.Whichbythe way,wouldhave takenup
fourunnecessaryseconds.Whichdoesn'tsoundlike alot,butwhenwatchingthe draftplay it
seemedtogoon for toolong.
Clip seven (0:18 - 0:19)
Aftertakinga fewshotswithanactual college bookletfull of tasksasa prop forthisscene,which
workedinreferencingthe collegeworksetting,anideacame intothe actressesmindtoendher part
rippingupa sheetof paperout of frustration.Havingtorestart shooting,anadditional propwas
createdthenand there bythe same personwhomade sure that the paperworkrelatedtowhatwas
neededdone onthe booklet.Aslittle asthe detail was.
Once the prop was ready,Ihad an ideato geta low angled,overthe shouldershottohighlightthe
workitself.The effortwasputintogettingthe scene right,mayas well have shownitfora few
secondsbefore the paperwasrippedup.Havingtoholdthe camera to getthat angle rightas well,I
am gladthe footage didn'tresultshaky.
Clip eight (0:19 - 0:20)
Thistime to record,the camera was placedonthe deskfacingtowardsthe actress ratherthan using
the tripodagainbeinginstead,aformof surface view.
ShowcasingJayciescharacterintentions,the audience cansee she istryingtogeton withthe work
laidoutin frontof her.
Lookingdownat it,she has herheadrestingon herlefthandas she taps the peninher right.She
appearsbored.Byher face,we see she isn'tveryimpressedandthere'sevenahintof clueless.Itis
obviousshe istryingtoget whatneedsdone done,it'sclearshe'sthinkingbythe movementof the
penas it isan actionmost do whilstworking.
Clip nine (0:21 - 0:23)
Again,as the lastclipmovesontothisand the next,continuityeditingwasused.Bythis,Iwantedto
make it clearshe has beenworkingonthe taskfor a while now.
Actuallywritingthistime,itissomewhatshowninherface once the pengetsliftedfromthe paper
that she isuncertainbywhat had justbeenwritten.
Notnoticingtill nearthe endof editing,Ihadalmostpublishedadraftwithan incidentinediting.As
I said,shotswere takenthenredone due tothe additionof the prop.Keepingbothsectionsfootage,
I had puttogethersequence where some momentsthe propwasthere asof othersitwas gone.
Beingunintentional,Ihadto go back and reorganize afew shots.Evenremove andaddunused
footage.

5 - Working on the editing, a video was recorded showing myfirst attempt that I wasn't too pleased with as it dragged in
result.

6 - Redoing this, all the clips had been shortened down as I hoped that would help create the time-lapse I was after.
Clip ten (0:23 - 0:28)
Beingthe lastclipto do withthisparticularscene,the sheetwasnow tobe scrunchedupto show
herfrustrationwiththe work.Althoughwe couldhave redone the shot,itwouldn'thave beenthe
bestas that wouldmeananothersheetwouldhave togetwrittenupreplacingthe ruinedone.

7 - Planning out the steps, it was suggested the one acting this out would count in her head then do it. Inserted here was us
discussing the plan and choosing the number she would count up to once the camera started recording before she ruined
the paper.

8 - Being the one shot we got, luckily it went well. Other than the small incident where the actress hurt her hand which is
the reason she claims as to why she turned away from the camera. Luckily all ended well, and she laughs through it you will
find at the end.
Clip eleven (0:28 - 0:30)
Ontothe final scene nowof the firsthalf of the video,needingthisdone anarrangementinset-up
was needed.Usingabedroom,the areahadbeentidiedupsothere wasn'ttoo muchin the wayof
the neededequipmentandprops.The onlyequipmentbeingthe SLRcamera,tripodand SD card
that wasalreadyinsertedinthe digital device.
As of props,usingan alreadyexistingdrawingforthe scene tobe ruined,one hadtobe chosenfor
the character to be seenworkingon.Followingthat,afew colouredpenswere placedonthe desk
readyto be usedwithone alreadyinhand.
Anotheritemtobe placed,the chocolate milkshakewe hadaside ready.Notbeingthe idealliquid,it
was the onlyone we had accessto as it waslate and if we wentdownfor a glassof water to use for
the stunt thenwe wouldhave riskedmakingtoomuchnoise.
The final arrangementwashisapparel.Before we beganfilming,the actorhadchangedthe bottom
wearchangingfrombrand newjoggersintoa pairfoundto be too small forhimthat were okayto
possiblyruin.Thenmid-wayshooting,we hadtorestartas the actor requestedhe changedthe shirt
he was wearingincase that got splashed.

9 - Here is a twenty-two second clip of getting the on-screen character to look somewhat tired, maybe even bored as well.
Asif to show he has spent so much time on it, so to get that right his posture had to be played around with. There isn't much
to it really.
Clip twelve (0:30 - 0:41)
Movingthe camera slightly,alowangle isusedwhere the disasterstrikes.Hintingtowardsthat
somethingbadisonlysecondsaway.Andthatdisaster actuallytooklongenoughjusttogetright as
there wasmomentsthe actionhappenedyetthe drinkwouldn'tspill asitwassupposedto.
The momentwhere the directionchange wasmade hadbeencapturedoncamera as I wason
movingthe equipmenttobeginrecordingfromadifferentangle.Below now Ishall insertthatclip.

10 - Checking the lid was loose, I directed the actor to reach for the pen furthest away so drink would get knocked as he
picks it up. This was taken before we clicked about it being best to take a few dummyshots so he could get the drink to spill
but looking as if to be an accident.

11 - Wanting to make sure he did as I needed right, we had to discuss the stunt figuring out how it was going to take place.

12 - Having multiple takes, this was one of the first experimental ones to help the character get a hang of what was
required of him. Failing, he was too awkward and barely even nudged the bottle.

13 - Getting successful dummyfootage, there was a few times the shots went our way.

14 - After finally getting the act right, the cap was loosened to capture the real deal. But even then, a few failed attempts
had been resulted on film.
15 - Once the first half of filming had been wrapped up, an image had been taken of the mess caused by the spillage. So
now, you will be able to see what followed the making of this scene.
Clip thirteen (0:41 - 0:47)
Withthisscene playingintothe revolutionarysequence,itneededtohave asmall flare.Soby
showinghisfrustrationbywhathadjusthappened,hisreactionmakesitobvious.Thenbywalking
off,yeshe couldbe off to do anythingbutit couldleadonhe's off to getwhathe needstocleanup.
Transitioningfromthe lastclip,Iwentfora cutting onaction.You wouldprobablynotice to,asthe
bottle getsplacedbackontothe deskthe clipcuts ontothisone.I wouldprefer tohave continued
on showinghimputtingthe milkdownfromthisangle,butthatIdidn'trecord. Of all the scenesfor
me changinganything,itwoulddefinitelyhave tobe thissectionof the video.Plusitbothersme
whilstwatchingthe cliphe placeshisheadinhandrightaway,secondsbefore inthatsame videohe
looksat the camera so evenif Iwantedtoexpandthatshot I couldn't.
Beinga dirtysingle shot,youcansee the cap isnow missingfromthe bottle.The chocolate milkwas
the problem,andnowitsas if the objectisstaringat the on-screenperson.

16 - Working on the frustration act, the actor had to get a little practice in pretending to be as annoyed as scripted, to find
in himself what I was after.
Endingwitha transitioneffectasthe clipfadestoblack,myintentionsthere wasonlytoexemplify
the whole revolutionaryeragoingoninthe nextclipandonwards.Thisis now the endof all the
stressful situationsandmoodymomentsaseveryone whohadascene are now movingonfor the
best.
Clip fourteen (0:48 - 0:52)
Rightaway,the coloursare different.Fading in,the shotopensupall yellow andmuchbrighter.Only
secondsin,the moodchange becomesclearforthe audience withoutanythingevenhappeningyet.
All we see isa hand enterthe insertshot,pressingthe buttontoturnon a console,pickupa remote
thenleave the frame.Howbythat can we know thingshave changednow?we can't, but withthe
coloureffectswe can.
Quickfunfact I have alreadymentionedelsewhere butshall again,thisupcomingsequencewas
neverinthe original script.Withdisruptionsgettinginthe wayof the original scene,Ihadto come
up on the spotwitha whole newideaneedinganew scene.Thinkingof the people Idohave access
to, the guywho ison screenwasthe one who came to mind.Thinkingabouthisinterest,gaming,I
thoughtup a wayto include thatrather thanrequestinghe actsout the dance scene itwas goingto
at firstas I knewhe wouldbe uncomfortable doingso.
Clip fifteen (0:52 - 0:55)
To make a statementonwhatwashappening,withall of Keilansscene being playedtogether,it
made more sense toshowmore of the process.Unlike the previousclipswhere the scenescutoff
one afterthe other withoutasecondhalf to it,thisone isthe onlytocontinue toplayrather than
jumpingtothe nextcharacter as the otherclipshave done.

17 - Having a go at getting this clip, it looked odd as he didn't bother bringing the microphone near to his mouth. From
behind the camera, I tried gesturing for him to do so. Hence, the confused reaction at the end of the video.
Addingontothe scene as we move on,we now see the same character wearinga change of clothes
as to whenthe spillage happened.A small,maybe longer,time skipisindicatedbythisasit isclear
he had tookthe time toget outof whatwe previouslysaw himwearingasnow he isin something
new.Fairenoughitisn'tshownexactlythatthe two sequencesare fromthe same moment,the
secondscene couldbe seenasit wasperformeddayslater.If people take itthatway,that isup to
them.Aslongas theycontinue tosee the message bywhatwenton.
Clip sixteen (0:56 - 1:00)
It was a goodthingI was alreadyplanningonmutingall the audiothatfollowedthe recorded
footage as toget thisclipright,I had to talkto the actor soit wouldappearhe isin a party and
gamingwithothers,chattingtothemwitha few laughs.AtfirstI didtry gettinghimto pretendhe
was talkingtosomeone,buthe feltawkwarddoingsoandwouldn'tdoit.
Recordingthissequence,Iexperimentedbytakingafew shotswiththe use of differentangles.Fora
few,Icaught footage onlycapturingsome of hisface inwhilstalsowantingtorecordthe television
as he played.Yes,gettingthisscene Iallowedhimtoactuallyplayavideogame tomake the
sequence more real.Withthisangle,Ihadto holdthe device myself whichleadtoanincidentI
didn'tnotice at first.Turnsout, fora fewshots,I caught the tripodrightin the middle.Easymistake,
easyfix luckily.

18 - I would have preferred we see less of the background and more focus on the TV itself using an over the shoulder shot,
but with that there was no expression caught from the characters face. Here is a clip with two in one of what I have
mentioned about the shot.
Clip seventeen (1:01 - 1:02)
Thisshot,I wasn't actuallygoingtoinclude.Butwhenlookingintoitmore,Ibegantolike itas it gave
more of an openingintothe scene ratherthanhow itwas originallygoingtogoheadingstraightinto
the mainpart of the scene.
Clip eighteen (1:03 - 1:03)
In betweenthe videobeingused,thereisamomentshe looksat me behindthe cameraandsmiles,
wantingtouse both the start and endof the videohadto snip the middle outtocontinue beingable
to use.

19 - I do wish I carried on recording for an extra few seconds whilst she puts the bag down as with the way it was edited
into the advertisement, the clip is very short. Too fast paced as well, the clip is over before you can catch on to much.
Clip nineteen (1:03 - 1:05)
20 - Getting our little star of the shots out, one of four of the actress' rabbits had been chosen to be apart of the
advertisement.
Gettingonto the nextclip,the audience now getstosee whythe characterhad the prop I recently
mentionedathand.Little Minnie hasbeenintroducedaswe have afinal scene forJaycie.
Usingthe treat,the actress hasher petfollow the snackshe holdinherhand givingmore of a
sequence thangivingthe treatrighttoher.Again,thiswas herideaas the choice of rabbit starswas
betweenthe one onscreennow,andforher Jaycie wouldgive the bunnyatreat.Asof the other
rabbit,Loki,she wouldhave satand cuddledhim.Soto make the scene more interesting,itwas
Minnie we wentwith.
Clip twenty (1:06 - 1:11)
Wantingto geta groundlevelledshot,Icouldn'tuse the tripodasthe saidequipmentremainsto
standfar too tall.Doingmy besttoget a steadyshot,I had to laydownwhilstholdingthe piece of
technologytogetwhatI was after.
Givingthe rabbitthe treat now,the character had the floppy-earedanimaldoatrick for the purpose
of the rollingcamera.Thattrick as youwill have seen,wasthe rabbitstandingononher hindlegsas
she reachedforthe treat.
Risingthe cameraonce the rabbitstoodup, I aimedtoshow boththe animalsface aswell asthe
humansas she lookeddownather ticklingthe bunny'snose.
Clip twenty-one (1:11 - 1:13)
Again,thiswasa momentI wasn'tgoingto include atfirst.But watchingthroughwhatI alreadyput
together,itseemedabitrushedtome.Evenif the scene lastsa goodwhile,clipnineteenand
twentywe asthe audience see herfeedingthe animal,thenwithoutthe shotIam talkingaboutnow
it movedstraightontoherholdingthe creature.But withthisclip,there ismore of a process.First
she teasesherpetslightlyhavingherfollow the treatthe ownerhasinherhand, nextthe rabbit
standsup to getthe food,nowthe animal isbeingstroked.
Clip twenty-two (1:13 - 1:18)
Thennextthingyouknow,the onscreencharacterisholding,cuddlingthe animal.Notjustthat,we
see she issmilingandtalkingtothe one inher arms.This character isina muchbettermood
comparedto where we lastsawher.
Seeingnowlike,the cameracouldhave beenbetterfocussed.The scene doescontinue tobe clear
enough,butlookingatthe playingclipthere isaslightsmudge thinggoingon.
Overall withthisscene though,the audience claimedtoenjoyseeingthe rabbitmidwaythe
advertisement,sothere isbonuspointsforthe rabbitsparticipation.Whenitfirstcame toplanning

21 - Making it clearer, you can tell by the footage here I tried to stay ahead. Again like I said, it was a struggle to keep up
with him as he practically kept speeding off.

If I could, there is something I'd happily go back to change about the shot. And thatis the movement.
I getthat my intentionsweretofollow himfromthe front,sowiththatinmindI was tryingto catch
up to him.Butwhenit came to editing,Ihave foundthe resultmayhave beenbetterif whenitcame

Gettingto the final scene now,the camerahadbeenplacedonthe ground withthe onlyinstruction
giventowalkintothe frame and headup the street.Byhis choice,he wantedtokickthe ball as he
headedoff.Onlytakingone singletake,we almosthadtogo back andrefilmtocapture him walking
normallywithoutthe ball touchingthe floor.Notdoingso,the actor haddecidedagainstitas itwas
eitherthisscene orone of the nextshots.

Gettingthisclip,itisonlya secondsnippettakenfromthe previousclip.Ratherthanmakingthe
audience watchthe characterspendso manysecondswalking,anotheruse of continuityeditingwas
includedtoaddeffectonwhere the personisheadedashe kicksthe football.
Watchingthe two clipsline up,Ibelieveabetterattemptcouldhave wentintoitas itlooksas if he
stumblesintothe nextstep.IbelieveImayhave aimedto try have itlookas if in thiscliphe landson
the leftfootafterplacingthe rightdownin the previousclip.Anadditional secondortwowould
have beenuseful tohave putin.

For thiswhole upcomingsequence,somuchof the footage takenendedupgoingunused.That
beinganglesthatwere playedaroundwithandactionsunseeninthe final cut.
For one,as thisclipshowsthe onscreencharacterturningthe corner,shotsbefore thisshow him
walkingupthe streethe wason in the previousclipwhere we onlysaw hisfeet.Those clipsaswell,

22 - Showing where we messed up, instead of kicking the ball Jamie had the item at hand with both of us forgetting he was
meant to kick it. Still, it took a re-take or two for us to realise the mistake.

23 - Before getting to where we fixed the issue, there was an improvised moment where he walked along looking down at
his phone.

24 - Finallygetting a usable shot, I added a rise in motion was used. As the guy got closer, using the tripod, the camera
began to look up becoming a low angled frame. Not stopping until the character left the shot, I hoped to create some sort
of impact on the shot.

25 - Rather than heading onto the road, the actor continued to kick the ball down the path he was on. This of course, is
another unused video as in the next recording I had him go onto the road giving me more to play with than him going in a
straight direction.
Beingsnippedfromthe previousclip,the continuityeditingwasusedonce againtoshow where the
character isheadedbutwitha shortenedtime durationallowing himtojumpfromone spotto the
nextinattemptsof avoidingroughcutsand confusion.Beingonthe pathat first,inthisclipwe now
see himfurtherdowninthe middle of the road.

Againinthisclip,the same effectwas usedwiththe editing.Headinginadifferentdirectionasthe
clipplayingasecondbefore,Ididmy besttotry match the footstepsavoidingthe scene from
lookingglitchylikeafewothermomentscaughtthatdon't lookright.Havingmore time withthis
videowithall the space inthe settingitwasa loteasiertoget a hang of gettingright.Quite funas
well.
Keepinmind,endingthe clipthe characterlandsonhisright foot.

Connectingthiscliptothe lastduringthe post-productionstage,Imade sure tohave hisright foot
landto make an illusionthatthere wasnooff cameraaffair.It isslightlyhardto catch, butthat is a
goodthingas it runs smoothly.Withthat,Iam actuallyquite happywhenplayingthroughthe scene.
Usingthis momentinthe video,the audience beginstogeta widerknowledge inwherethe
character isheaded.Fairenough,theydon'tknow exactlyyet,buttheygettowatch himenterone
endof a cut. By that now,there hasgot to be somethingatthe otherendwhere he wasaimingto
getto.

26 - There was times he didn't get far back enough or even headed off before I could even hit record giving too short of
footage to carry on with.

27 - Before going with the camera placement I did go ahead with in the final cut, this was another trial I went with. Which is
basically just the opposite side of the cuts entrance as to where the camera sits next.

28 - This scene, I debated on using in the final cut as I found myself liking the close-up perspective. Having to choose though,
I decided against it as the scene isn't so clear for the audience.

headingtowards,awhole scene wasrecordedof the actor playingfootball onhisown.Fromkicking

31 - One of the few missed shots that didn't go to plan. There was another that was close to hitting me and the equipment
actually, good thing I said it was close. Wouldn't fancy having to return broken equipment.

32 - With the failed attempts, also came a few that did go to plan. Inserted here is one of not so many clips that caught the

33 - Being the only shots that the camera was handheld for, a re-enactment went into the celebration. Having to follow the
actor, I got it more in focus and closer this time round. I do believe more could have went into it, but it's not like I went
ahead and involved the following sequence somewhere in the advertisement, so its fine really.

34 - This time with a medium close-up, it was very bumpy and messykeeping up with the actor as his character cheers. My
intentions that time was to get more expression out of the actor, but running with the camera zoomed in wasn't a usable
idea. A point of view shot could of worked better if I had access to such rig like a chest cam. Or even a dolly would have
been useful I think, might not have worked being on the grass though.
Afterall that though,none of itmade it intothe final outcome.Thinkingaboutit,itwouldhave only
draggedthe advertisementoutlongerwhichwill have beenunnecessary.Plus,Ifindthe endingto
the advertisementsaysaloton its ownwiththe ball beingkickedintothe field. The audience should
knowby thatwhat he is upto, there wasn'treallya needtocontinue onthe scene.
Final scene (1:38 - 1:45)
Fadingon topof the previousclipasitcontinuestoplayisa PNGof the clientslogo.Withoutthe use
of the logo,the advertisementitselfwouldhave came acrosspointless.Placingitmidwayasthe
camerasfocus movedfromone endto the nextfollowingthe ball,itgave the opportunityto
smoothlyslide inthe image.SothatiswhatI wentaheadand done.
Thenas you will notice,the screenfadedtoblackas Jamie isseenrunningtowardsthe ball he had
justkicked.Doingthat,I had inmindthose oldishfilms,(sayingoldbecause youdon'treallysee it
anymore),where ashotcarrieson playingwhilstthe creditsbeginto roll uponscreen.Thenthe shot
eitherfadestoa colouror continuesplayingthe wholesequence.Well asobviousasitis,fadingto
blackis whatI wentwithto finishoff the advertisement.
Onlyhavingthe logoonscreennow,it lookedempty.Something wasdefinitelyneed,whetherthat
was a phone number,website orsocial medialinks,itneededanything.Before goingaheadand
addingto the sequence,Ididaquicklookintoofficial Mindadvertisements.Findingfromthere,the
onlyadditionisawebsite link.KeepingwhatI've made similartoan existingproduct,all thatwas
addedislinkthat wouldleadtothe official charitieswebpage.
CONCLUSION:
The stressof schedulinginproductionhadtobe the worstpart of itall,arrangingtimesanddays
withpeople justtohave tocancel movingeverythingabout.Thatwaspartlymyfaultas I had
scriptedforso manypeople tobe included,butall isdone now andI don't regretanyof my plans
throughout.Havinga mosthatedmoment,whatI hadfun withmostwasthe scriptingandinitial
planning.All the ideasthatwouldcome tomind,Icouldeasilygeteverythingdowntothendecide
whatit was I wantedtodo withit.
Alreadymentioningthroughoutthisevaluation,there are definitelymomentsIwouldhappily go
back and redo.But at leastnowI can say there are sectionsIhave learntfromand will aimtodo
betternexttime.Thatincludingallowingthe cameratorun secondslonger,evenafterthe actionhas
beendone asneeded.Itwouldhelptohave afew longervideosnomatterhow well itall wentonin
the frame,doingsowouldhelpthe post-productionalot.
One thinginparticularI reallywantto workon, ismy communication.Alwayshavingthisissue,
comingontothe creative mediacourse Ihave foundan enjoymentindirecting,butwithoutthe ideal
communicationthatisrequired,itdoesn'tworkoutsowell forme as much as I wouldpreferitto.
Needitto even.Havingideasof whatIwantedthose castedto do,I had a hard time getting
directionsouteverytime.There wasmomentsall wentwell,butagain,itwouldbe greaterforme to
improve onthe saidskill.
SomethingIdidn'texpecttogetdecentlydone wasthe whoeditingprocess.Yes,Igetit wontbe the
bestpieceseverdone,butconsideringthisisn'tasectorI've done oftenenoughIhadmore doubts
aboutthe post-productionstage more thananyotherpart of thisproject.Sofor someone who
doesn'thave a talentinpiecingclipstogether,Ilike how ithasturnedout.The mainparts I am not
so happywithismainlythe continuityattempts.Doingthisaboutfive times,there isonlyone use of
it I knowI like assome of the othersI am unsure abouthow theyhave turnedout whilstthe
remainingfewtheylookglitchyandcouldhave beenputtogetherbetter,if onlythe videosthey
were takenfromwere secondslonger.
Overall,Ifindmyself happywithwhatIhave managedtoproduce,eventhroughthe flawsof itand
all.Startingfromthe pre-productionupuntil now,Ihave hada lot of fun workingonthiscampaign.I
didn'tmindthe researcheitherreally,if itsuitedmyinterestmore thenImostlikelywouldhave had
more funwithit. Eitherwaythough,thatis all overand done now,andas I said,I am happywiththe
resultedproduct.

Smile Campaign: Evaluation Havingto put togetheravideothatworksin advertisingthe charity,Mind,myinitialintentionswere to share awarenessonmental healthandissuesyoungpeople gothrough,focusingmore on stressful situationsthananythingother.Todothis,there wouldbe twochaptersinone,givingtime to showa range of people intheirownsituationsavoidingthe use of repetitionsoplentycanrelate. In the firsthalf,byjumpingbetweendifferentpeople,theyare all foundstressedfordifferent reasons.Thenas the advertisementcarriesonplayinggettingtothe secondhalf,those same people have beencheeredup.Again,bydifferentcausesgivingthe audience more of achance to relate. Hopingto showas well thatall ittakesreallyisa smile foronesmoodto brightenup. Travelingthroughthisdocument,all will be discussedinthe ordereachscene playsout.Startingoff withthe veryfirstclipto playafterthe one secondtime consumptioncausedbythe fade towhite effectplacedpurposelyonthe following, openingshot... Clip one (0:01 - 0:05) Beingan unexpecteddayof filming,the casthad onlybecome official the daybefore withtrouble on arrangements.Tryingtomake itearlyWednesday,itendedupbeingearlyTuesdayinsteadwhich workeda lotbetterforme alreadyhavingplanstofilmelsewhere onthatsame Wednesday. Discussingbetweenthem,Iallowedthe three includedtodecide amongthemselveswhowouldbe the one the videowasfocusingonforthere part as I wasn'tafteranyone inparticular.Knowing some formof headphoneswasapropto be included,the one castmemberwhohadinhanda pair of earpods wasthe one we wentwith.TravisYoung. Before shooting,IhadthemsigntheirconsentformswhilstIheadedtothe electricianoffice to gatherthe equipmentneeded.Thatbeingatrip allowingsteadyshotsandof course,anSLR camera as I alreadyhadthe SD card ready. Havinginmindto do the scene outside yetstill oncampus,acorner wasfoundneara wall sothe camera couldfocusmostlyonthemnot wantingtodraw attentionnorcatch any stragglerswho didn'tconsentto beingapartof the shots. Readyto beginfilming,Ihadthe two (DevonandOwen) standfacingeachotherto show they weren'tgivingTravisanynotice,close enoughhavingthe scene looknatural butenoughspace the camera couldstill see the maincharacter.Addingtothe scene beingmade toappearnatural,the twowho were chattingoncamera were givenonlyone instruction.Andthatwasto improvise.No scriptwas given,notopicto leantowards,nonothing.Sotheydidas I requested,anditworked. Movingon, I originallyhaditinmindtouse highanglesforthe shots relatedtothe firstsequence so the camera itself islookingdownonthe character of focus.Thengettingto the second,low camera angleslookingupatthe same charactersas theycheerup. By this,itwouldsymbolise how the focus character ispersonallyinthe situationswe asthe audience are seeingthemin. But whenitcame to filming,the tripodwastoo small tocapture the angle I wasafter.Holdingthe camera wasan option,thingwasI didn'ttrust that the shotwouldresulthow Iwanteditto due to shakyhandsthat wouldgive shakyfootage.Sotostill getthe shotdone,I hadto make do withwhat I couldget usingthe tripod.

As itcame to editing,Iwantedthe coloursandlightingof the shotstohelpinreferencingthe mood of the central character.So from thisclipuptill the lastin the firstsequence,the tint,temperature, saturationandvibrance toolswere all modifiedhavingeveryclipthe effectsare ongloomier. Originally,itwasonlythe tintandtemperature until feedbackwasreceivedonthe preview screeningasI had beengiventhe same suggestionIhadalreadyintended.Turnsthey,theydidn't notice the difference inthe sequence.Sogoingback,Itamperedwithadditionaltoolsinattemptsto make it slightlymore obvious. Clip two (0:06 - 0:07) Wantingto capture a differentperspective of the scene,Ithenmovedtothe leftof the three.Just thistime,itwas clearwhothe camera was focusinguponaspointingdirectlyatTravishe wasthe onlyone inthe frame goingfrom a three shotto a one shot.Endingthe scene,the frame continued to zoomin onhim. My intentionfromthiswasmainlyjusttocapture the charactersfacial expression,standinghimout fromthe othertwo.Hishair kindof got in the wayof that a bit,but still itaddsontoTravis' character inthe advertisement.Iwouldmuchprefertohave a longervideoof this,butitdidn'tworkout. To record,I handheldthe camerato geta higherview whichleadtoan unpleasantlymessyshotwith the camera shaking.Itwas evenworse whenitcame tozoominginon the character. https://sway.office.com/m0Srx0HIEmmx5fBb#content=7gGR6onCjiSoBJ 1 - Holding the camera myself definitelydoesn't result in the best footage. Especiallywhen it's steady recordings I am wanting to use. Since I haven'tactuallyexplainedyet,bythisscene the focuscharacter(asmentioned) feelsleftout, with the two he isn't in the greatest of moods. Being stuck in the situation, all he can do is waitit out. Maybe notstuck,reallyitdepends onhow the audience seesitasitis a commonspot to be in.Third wheelingafriendshipthatis,prettymuchfeelingcompletelyignoredandleftout.Aseasyas itcould be just towalkoff,not everyone doesit.Again,aslongas the message of the advertisementgetsout thenthe audience cansee ithowevertheylike. Clip three (0:08 - 0:14) For thisscene,myaimwas to have the character appearannoyeddue toan argumentgoingon in the nextroom.Sat on hisphone,the actor wouldreactby storming outthe house inthe end.

Notusingthe tripodfor thisshot,I probablyshouldhave tookashot or twousingthe equipmentas insteadIendedupusingthe table insteadtolaythe device onwhilsttiltingitupwardsslightly otherwise all thatcouldhave beencaughtwouldhave beenthe actorslegs. Gettingontothe nextscene now,itdidtake plentytofinallywrapthe shotup as multiple re-take were needed.Issuesrangedbetweenthe castmembernotpullingthe rightfacial expression,not standinghimselfuphowIwantedhimto, hisposture differing,therewasevenmomentsof laughter bursting out mid recording. Even with it taking a while, the filming process was still fun to be apart of. Giving him a scenario as to why he could be annoyed, a lot of giggles, posture corrections, all fun. As dramatic as he can be, it was slightlydifficult getting the action right as he enough into it. So it took another to step up and get him to do it how I requested. Till he burst out laughing causing us having to re-shoot once again.

Making dowithwhat footage wasgathered,Ibelieve alittle more couldhave beenputintothe start of the scene asreally all the audience seesisthe guylookingathisphone,pull aface thengetup and walkout.Lookingback at it,he couldhave lookedslightlymore irritatedwhilstlookingathis phone.Rubbedhisforeheadmaybe.A few extrareactions. In the final outcome,the scene issilentasyou'll probablyknow.Whilstplanningthatsequence,I was hopingtohave an audiofile toinclude of acouple arguing.Requestingitof twoto voice record themselvesandsenditovertome,it tookweeksafterweeksof askingforthemtogetit done. Constantlyforgetting,theybecame unreliable soIwentaheadandaskedanothercouple agreedto do it.But again,theynevergotroundto doingit so I endedupneverreceivingthatfile andhave had to do without.Ididthinkaswell duringthe preview Iwouldgetacommentfromsomeone onitas maybe the shotdidn'tmake sense,butsurprisinglytherewaszerocomments. Clip four (0:14 - 0:15) Beingfromthe same clip,I attemptedacontinuityeditingstyledsequence forthe scene.Thatagain, I believedwouldhave beenanissue gettingbythe audience,butagainthere,Ididn't.Wantingtoget it as smoothlyasI could,myfirstgo at it had the scenescutbetweenfootsteps.Asone footlanded, the videoignoredthe nextfootlandingmovingstraightontothe same footlanding.Itwastoorough and quick,didn'tworkat all. Fixingit,clipthree endsonJamie landingonrightfoot.Thenaswe get to clipfour,(thisclip),we see himlandon the same foot movingoff withthe rightbuttwostepsaheadfrom the last. Clip five (0:15 - 0:16) Doingthe same again,thistime roundI actuallyhad to inserta differentcliptofinishoff the scene. Thiswas due to inthe firstclipbeingedited,itendedwiththe characterjustleavingroom.Whereas inthe additionshot,he opensthe doorthenclosesitbehindhimwalkingoutthe house. Withthat beingto differentshots,whatwasdifficulttoovercome wasthe cameraspositionasits differentineachshot.I wouldprefertohave hadit run a lotsmoother,butthere isn'tmuch I can do to fix thatnow nothavingthe time to go back andre-shoot. Clip six (0:16 - 0:17) Closingthe door,I hadto trim betweenhimopeningthe doorandclosingitas it wouldhave dragged leavinginthe whole durationof the saidactionhappening.Whichbythe way,wouldhave takenup fourunnecessaryseconds.Whichdoesn'tsoundlike alot,butwhenwatchingthe draftplay it seemedtogoon for toolong. Clip seven (0:18 - 0:19) Aftertakinga fewshotswithanactual college bookletfull of tasksasa prop forthisscene,which workedinreferencingthe collegeworksetting,anideacame intothe actressesmindtoendher part rippingupa sheetof paperout of frustration.Havingtorestart shooting,anadditional propwas
  • 5. createdthenand there bythe same personwhomade sure that the paperworkrelatedtowhatwas neededdone onthe booklet.Aslittle asthe detail was. Once the prop was ready,Ihad an ideato geta low angled,overthe shouldershottohighlightthe workitself.The effortwasputintogettingthe scene right,mayas well have shownitfora few secondsbefore the paperwasrippedup.Havingtoholdthe camera to getthat angle rightas well,I am gladthe footage didn'tresultshaky. Clip eight (0:19 - 0:20) Thistime to record,the camera was placedonthe deskfacingtowardsthe actress ratherthan using the tripodagainbeinginstead,aformof surface view. ShowcasingJayciescharacterintentions,the audience cansee she istryingtogeton withthe work laidoutin frontof her. Lookingdownat it,she has herheadrestingon herlefthandas she taps the peninher right.She appearsbored.Byher face,we see she isn'tveryimpressedandthere'sevenahintof clueless.Itis obviousshe istryingtoget whatneedsdone done,it'sclearshe'sthinkingbythe movementof the penas it isan actionmost do whilstworking. Clip nine (0:21 - 0:23) Again,as the lastclipmovesontothisand the next,continuityeditingwasused.Bythis,Iwantedto make it clearshe has beenworkingonthe taskfor a while now. Actuallywritingthistime,itissomewhatshowninherface once the pengetsliftedfromthe paper that she isuncertainbywhat had justbeenwritten. Notnoticingtill nearthe endof editing,Ihadalmostpublishedadraftwithan incidentinediting.As I said,shotswere takenthenredone due tothe additionof the prop.Keepingbothsectionsfootage, I had puttogethersequence where some momentsthe propwasthere asof othersitwas gone. Clip ten (0:23 - 0:28) Beingthe lastclipto do withthisparticularscene,the sheetwasnow tobe scrunchedupto show herfrustrationwiththe work.Althoughwe couldhave redone the shot,itwouldn'thave beenthe bestas that wouldmeananothersheetwouldhave togetwrittenupreplacingthe ruinedone. https://sway.office.com/m0Srx0HIEmmx5fBb#content=KlQy2FT262MBYK 7 - Planning out the steps, it was suggested the one acting this out would count in her head then do it. Other than the small incident where the actress hurt her hand which is the reason she claims as to why she turned away from the camera. Luckily all ended well, and she laughs through it you will find at the end.

Clip eleven (0:28 - 0:30) Ontothe final scene nowof the firsthalf of the video,needingthisdone anarrangementinset-up was needed.Usingabedroom,the areahadbeentidiedupsothere wasn'ttoo muchin the wayof the neededequipmentandprops.The onlyequipmentbeingthe SLRcamera,tripodand SD card that wasalreadyinsertedinthe digital device. As of props,usingan alreadyexistingdrawingforthe scene tobe ruined,one hadtobe chosenfor the character to be seenworkingon.Followingthat,afew colouredpenswere placedonthe desk readyto be usedwithone alreadyinhand. Anotheritemtobe placed,the chocolate milkshakewe hadaside ready.Notbeingthe idealliquid,it was the onlyone we had accessto as it waslate and if we wentdownfor a glassof water to use for the stunt thenwe wouldhave riskedmakingtoomuchnoise. The final arrangementwashisapparel.Before we beganfilming,the actorhadchangedthe bottom wearchangingfrombrand newjoggersintoa pairfoundto be too small forhimthat were okayto possiblyruin.Thenmid-wayshooting,we hadtorestartas the actor requestedhe changedthe shirt he was wearingincase that got splashed. https://sway.office.com/m0Srx0HIEmmx5fBb#content=pgNYmdoKSjgf4Q 9 - Here is a twenty-two second clip of getting the on-screen character to look somewhat tired, maybe even bored as well. Asif to show he has spent so much time on it, so to get that right his posture had to be played around with. There isn't much to it really. Clip twelve (0:30 - 0:41) Movingthe camera slightly,alowangle isusedwhere the disasterstrikes.Hintingtowardsthat somethingbadisonlysecondsaway.Andthatdisaster actuallytooklongenoughjusttogetright as there wasmomentsthe actionhappenedyetthe drinkwouldn'tspill asitwassupposedto. The momentwhere the directionchange wasmade hadbeencapturedoncamera as I wason movingthe equipmenttobeginrecordingfromadifferentangle.Below now Ishall insertthatclip.

Givingthe rabbitthe treat now,the character had the floppy-earedanimaldoatrick for the purpose of the rollingcamera.Thattrick as youwill have seen,wasthe rabbitstandingononher hindlegsas she reachedforthe treat. Risingthe cameraonce the rabbitstoodup, I aimedtoshow boththe animalsface aswell asthe humansas she lookeddownather ticklingthe bunny'snose. Clip twenty-one (1:11 - 1:13) Again,thiswasa momentI wasn'tgoingto include atfirst.But watchingthroughwhatI alreadyput together,itseemedabitrushedtome.Evenif the scene lastsa goodwhile,clipnineteenand twentywe asthe audience see herfeedingthe animal,thenwithoutthe shotIam talkingaboutnow it movedstraightontoherholdingthe creature.But withthisclip,there ismore of a process.First she teasesherpetslightlyhavingherfollow the treatthe ownerhasinherhand, nextthe rabbit standsup to getthe food,nowthe animal isbeingstroked. Clip twenty-two (1:13 - 1:18) Thennextthingyouknow,the onscreencharacterisholding,cuddlingthe animal.Notjustthat,we see she issmilingandtalkingtothe one inher arms.This character isina muchbettermood comparedto where we lastsawher. Seeingnowlike,the cameracouldhave beenbetterfocussed.The scene doescontinue tobe clear enough,butlookingatthe playingclipthere isaslightsmudge thinggoingon. Overall withthisscene though,the audience claimedtoenjoyseeingthe rabbitmidwaythe advertisement,sothere isbonuspointsforthe rabbitsparticipation.Whenitfirstcame toplanning thisscene,boththe firsthalf and second,thisscene wasn'tevenapartof the original script.But,we didhave it plannedasa backupwithmy firstinitial ideabeingtofilmatthe horse stablesthe actress goesto, capturinghercheeredupbylookingafterone of the horses.Notbeingable todo so as I have alreadyexplainedinanotherdocument,thiswasthe resultinstead. Clip twenty-six (1:26 - 1:27) Gettingthisclip,itisonlya secondsnippettakenfromthe previousclip.Ratherthanmakingthe audience watchthe characterspendso manysecondswalking,anotheruse of continuityeditingwas includedtoaddeffectonwhere the personisheadedashe kicksthe football. Having to follow the actor, I got it more in focus and closer this time round.
