Q&A with Jade
Q: Every year my dog gets scared when she hears fireworks. I’ve tried to reassure her but nothing seems to help.
What else can I do help her through this?
A: fear is a common response to fireworks in many animals. Signs of stress can include vocalising, cowering,
overgrooming and soiling in the house. We recommend that you start taking precautions in the weeks leading up
to fireworks season by using calming products such as Adaptil, Feliway or Pet Remedy. These are available as
sprays or plug-in products that help your pet feel more relaxed. Providing areas where your pet can hide is also a
great idea, for example creating a makeshift den. Having the TV or radio on can also help in creating a distraction
from the sudden loud bangs; however it is also important that you try and ignore the noises as well.
If these precautions don’t help then see one of our vets or nurses who can offer more advice or medications if
needed. Also be sure to attend our talk on fireworks on September 21st.
The Big Move!
The new rehoming centre is
almost ready and the Blue Cross
will be taking up residence in
their premises in Oct/Nov.
The new centre will be able to
house twice the number of
homeless and abandoned cats
and dogs.
The new centre near Ipswich is designed to try and meet the
increasing need for spaces in rehoming centres.
It will have designated kitten and puppy units for nursing mothers and
their litters to have the best start possible.
A new clinical suite will also be built to allow veterinary procedures
to be done on site.
There will also be separate cat and dog admission areas to provide as
stress-free an environment as possible for these vulnerable animals.
The plans sound very exciting. We all look forward to seeing the
completed project very soon.

Interview with Laura Marsh
Veterinary Receptionist
How long have you been working at
Whitworths?
Since October 2007, so that is 8 years already.
What were you doing before joining the
practice?
After college I worked as a waitress in Felixstowe.
What are the best and worst aspects of your job?
The best part is definitely dealing with the animals, but the hardest part
is certainly having to say goodbye to them once their time has come.
Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy walking. Morag and I recently completed the Walk for Life and
we are now training for Jack Wilkinson Memorial Walk in September.
Do you have any pets of your own?
I have a lovely 9 year old German Shepard Dog called Sadie, she has
been in the family since she was 8 weeks old.
Pippa’s Story
Little Pippa has been such a brave little
girl. She was having episodes of
vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain
on and off for several weeks.
She was diagnosed with pancreatitis but
the traditional treatments did not resolve
all her symptoms. She underwent
numerous tests including surgery to take biopsies of her intestines. This
provided some invaluable information. We found that she had a
combination of a parasitic infection and inflammatory bowl disease.
Since this discovery she has responded well the further treatments.
It was a long process for little Pippa but she is now much improved and
is enjoying life again.
She has even been able to help her owner scare off a burglar.
We wish her well in her new life as a crime fighter!
Open Day Charity Dog Show
Despite the rain the charity show was a great
success. We raised £1000 for the various charities
who took part on the day.
We would like to thank everyone who came
and participated.
It would not have been possible without your
support.
Trimley
Carnival

supporters from
Whitworth vets enjoyed the farm
themed float at Trimley Carnival
and were pleased to be supporting
local charities, including cats
protection. Special thanks are also
due to Jewsons in Martlesham for
kindly lending us a generator for
our music system for the day.
Update on Ashleigh’s Nurse Training…
“I just finished term 2. It was hard work but good fun. I felt prepared
because all the advice Jade and Tara gave me but it was still a lot of
work. I am looking forward the next term.”
