aimed at raising funds to
support homeless teens.
The event is organised by
Bolton Young Persons
Housing Scheme and will be

A DAREDEVIL from Hea-
ton gave new meaning to
the idea of shop until you
dropped by abseiling a 60
metre tower — despite be-
ing blind.
Carole Pilkington, who
was officially registered
as blind six years ago,
abseiled down the Traf-
ford Centre’s clock tower,
which is said to boast
some of the best views of
the Peak District.
The 58-year-old, of Bev-
erly Road, took part in
the Drop and Shop event
to raise money for Guide
Dogs UK, a charity she
has been passionate about
since becoming a guide
dog owner in 2008. She has
so far raised £123.
Her guide dog, Merlin, a
Labrador-retriever cross,
has had a huge impact on
her life since she was reg-
istered blind.
Mrs Pilkington said:
“Being a part of the chari-
ty and having Merlin with
me has been wonderful.
It’s a movement that
I wholeheartedly
believe in
Carole Pilkington
“Merlin and Guide Dogs
UK have really helped me
get a part of my life back.
“It’s a movement that I
wholeheartedly believe in
and I appreciate everyone
who has donated.”
Guide Dogs UK has been
professionally breeding
and training guide dogs
for more than 75 years,
and also aids research
programmes and cam-
paigns for equal rights for
the visually impaired.
