The marketing manager provides an update on the first quarter of 2014 at Daktari Bush School, an animal orphanage and environmental education center in South Africa. Play isn’t just about having fun, it can also be really powerful – for all sorts of reasons. That’s why this 11 June is a day for every child and inner child in the UK to come out and play.
As part of the Responsible Cape Town pilot project, a workshop on World Tourism Day 2012 saw several leading Responsible Tourism businesses sharing their practices and recent actions. This presentation highlights the work that The Backpack has been doing with a local NGO called Greater Commission United (GCU).

Marketing Manager
Hello!
After a slow start to the year, I am pleased to say
that we are now back on our feet and well into
2014! January, February and March have flown by
but not without 70 + children passing through, 6
new animals and a range of enclosure updates
around the camp. As always, we have to thank you
for your continued support that keeps us going.
I hope you enjoy the following slides with a round
up of the best bits – all the best, Amy Hulme.

DAKTARI TV STARS!
In February we welcomed back
Celia, who filmed the DAKTARI
documentary that aired in December.
This time she brought her students with
her and they will all produce their own
short films about DAKTARI to support
our marketing. Thank you so much!
ENCLOSURE UPGRADES!
Thanks to the amazing support we
received at Christmas time for our
virtual gifts, we were able to upgrade
many enclosures with comfy
hammocks, tunnels and ladders.
Gasper and Tiki were very happy!

VALENTINES LOVING!
We had a wonderful February and a
wonderful Valentines Day thanks to all who
contributed to our Sponsor a Child and
Donate to an Animal campaigns on Global
Giving. Some of the funds raised allowed
these beautiful girls to attend DAKTARI over
the Valentines week.
RELEASING THE DASSIES
Sadly we found a few unexplained dead
baby Dassies in our enclosure. We
made the decision to release them all
and they have stayed around the camp!
During the release we rescued one baby
who is now part of the family. More on
him in the following slides

“AIN‟T NO PARTY LIKE A DAKTARI STREET PARTY!”
March 15th saw the return of our famous Street Party! 1 dirt road, surrounded
by game reserves, braai-ing sausages and beer under the African stars– what
more could you want? A big thanks to everyone who came along, it was a lot of
fun and raised 3,500 Rand for DAKTARI. We‟ll drink to that!
More mad pictures on our Facebook page.

MRS STRAUSS‟S STRESSFUL DAY
In February, Poor Mrs Strauss our
female ostrich suffered a serious
laceration to the back of her neck. We
are not sure how it happened but as
soon as we noticed it the Vet had to be
called.
Even after darting her, it took a few
hands to hold her still and keep her
temperature down from the mid-day
sun. Thankfully after cleaning, stitching,
dressing the wound - and an added vet
bill, Mrs Strauss made a full recovery

Daktari.
Hi I‟m Stoffles! I was
hand raised by a
family and they let
me go free. But I was
too scared, so I
scratched at
someone's door and
they brought me to
Daktari. I love my
new girlfriend Nwana
My name is Nwana,
it means „baby‟ in
Sepedi language.
I‟m very cheeky and

8. COMMUNITY HOME STAYS
DAKTARI Outreach Programme is very
excited with their new community home
stays. This great new partnership with
families in The Oaks village means that
our volunteers can stay with a local
African family, for one or two nights, for
the ultimate cultural experience at just
300 Rand. All the money goes to the
families providing them with extra income
generation for their families.
So far, all the volunteers have thoroughly
enjoyed it. For more info visit
www.daktaribushschool.org and click on
community projects.

9. SOLAR COOKER
Coming soon to the Oaks Village! The
Outreach team have sourced a supplier
of solar cookers and very soon, Tshepo,
our solar representative will be selling
them in her own community. We hope
to reduce the cutting of trees for fire
wood, reduce the cooking relating
labour of women and promote
sustainable, affordable living
alternatives.
Keep an eye on the Outreach Facebook
page for the latest updates!
