Central Idea: Natural materials can undergo changes that
may provide challenges and benefits for society and the
environment.
Lines of inquiry:
 Conditions that cause reversible and irreversible changes in
materials
 How societies take advantage of the properties of materials.
 The impact of retrieval, production and the use of materials
on the environment

Approaches to learning : Research and Thinking skills
Learning causes of reversible and
irreversible changes– using real time examples- melting
chocolate and butter, kneading dough etc.
Brainstorming and framing of essential agreements for
visit and use of Chemistry laboratory
Observing various experiments in the
Chemistry laboratory to analyze, evaluate and
form decisions about the material used
Concept - Change

Integration of art– Discussing and synthesizing new
understanding that natural material can be used in art with
different perspectives
Formative Assessment:
Task: Students explained the way society takes advantages of properties of materials.
Strategy: Students explained the understanding of different scientific principles, recorded
the process and explained the way society takes advantages of properties of materials.
They drew diagrams wherever necessary. They could use any tool for presentation
(digital, chart paper)

solute, saturated solution

how people take advantages of properties of
wood in their homes.

Summative Assessment:
Task: Students demonstrated their understanding of the central idea
through a presentation. They worked in pairs / groups and chose oral
presentation, ICT tools, students worked using the GRASPS.
Strategy: They chose a natural material and researched on citing uses
and challenges. They highlighted the retrieval, production and its effect
on the environment and society. They also presented the way the cho-
sen material is used for industrialization and its sustainability.

Art Class: Drawing of reindeer and colouring—Learning use
of oil pastel with blending
Children read the poem on ‘The Wind’ comprehend and reflect-
ed on the same. They further researched on the poet– Stanley
Cook and his poems
Initiation of what PYP Exhibition is…..
Children decorating Christmas tree
Sibling/Friends day: Children enjoyed the day with their
friends/sibling by singing carols, decorating trees, making
cards, cookies, pottery etc.

  • 2. TRansdisciplinary theme– How the world works Central Idea: Natural materials can undergo changes that may provide challenges and benefits for society and the environment. Lines of inquiry:  Conditions that cause reversible and irreversible changes in materials  How societies take advantage of the properties of materials.  The impact of retrieval, production and the use of materials on the environment Key concept: Function, Change, Responsibility Related concept: Sustainability, Transformation, Indus- trialization IBLP attributes : Principled, Knowledgeable, Risk-taker Approaches to learning : Research and Thinking skills
  • 3. Learning causes of reversible and irreversible changes– using real time examples- melting chocolate and butter, kneading dough etc.
  • 4. Brainstorming and framing of essential agreements for visit and use of Chemistry laboratory
  • 5. Observing various experiments in the Chemistry laboratory to analyze, evaluate and form decisions about the material used Concept - Change ATL– Thinking skills (critical thinking)
  • 6. Integration of art– Discussing and synthesizing new understanding that natural material can be used in art with different perspectives
  • 7. Formative Assessment: Task: Students explained the way society takes advantages of properties of materials. Strategy: Students explained the understanding of different scientific principles, recorded the process and explained the way society takes advantages of properties of materials. They drew diagrams wherever necessary. They could use any tool for presentation (digital, chart paper)
  • 8. Children learning about soluble, insoluble, solvent, solute, saturated solution
  • 9. Making connections Research on a natural material in class—Sharing how people take advantages of properties of wood in their homes.

  • 11. Summative Assessment: Task: Students demonstrated their understanding of the central idea through a presentation. They worked in pairs / groups and chose oral presentation, ICT tools, students worked using the GRASPS. Strategy: They chose a natural material and researched on citing uses and challenges. They highlighted the retrieval, production and its effect on the environment and society. They also presented the way the cho- sen material is used for industrialization and its sustainability.
