Second Session Report for EcoSlate Module on bio-diversity presented at Shalom Hills International School, Gurgaon (2014)

Objective:
To help students understand that our consumption impacts the biodiversity around us and it is therefore important for us to become responsible consumers and choose products which are natural and do not impact our biodiversity Class Plan:
1. Class started with a recap of key learnings from the previous session
2. Students were then involved in a simple mathematical simulation exercise wherein they had to find out the total paper used by them in one year in the form of their notebooks, books, newspapers, almanac, drawing book etc
3. The exercise was then extended to a point wherein students had to calculate the total paper consumed by the entire class VI in 1 year
4. These numbers were then linked to number of trees being cut and the amount of forest area being cleared because of their usage of paper in the school
5. Through web of life activity conducted in last sessions, students were asked to link cutting of trees with the impact on other elements of the biodiversity
6. Students were then made to understand through this simulation how their consumption patterns are impacting the biodiversity around us
7. A case of Palm Oil consumption and the subsequent deterioration of rainforests in Malaysia and Indonesia was presented to the students which completely shocked them Home exercise:
Students have been given Worksheet 2 under which they have to analyse the ingredients present in some of the daily use items such as shampoo, soap, cream etc and understand if these ingredients in any way impact our environment. As a part of the worksheet, students also have to find natural alternatives to these products.
