3. The Erythron
ο Circulating cells, their nucleated
precursors, and all elements involved in
the control of erythroid proliferation
4. Erythrocyte Physiology
ο Specialized to carry out gas transport and is devoid of
nuclei, mitochondria, and ribosomes
ο Membrane surrounded heme + globin + protective
enzymes
ο Derive energy by glycolytic pathway
ο Erythropoietin
ο Transferrin and iron
ο Cerulospasmin facilitates iron transport
ο Ferritin
ο Hemosiderin
ο Reticuloctes
8. Hemorrhagic Anemia
ο Anemia resulting directly by the loss of blood
ο Iron stores are depleted
Occurs in
ο Parasitic diseases
ο Severe flea infestations
ο Chronic immune-mediated thrombocytopenia in
dogs
ο Gastrointestinal neoplasms
ο Bleeding intestinal carcinomas and
lymphosarcomas
9. Hemolytic Anemia
ο Immune mediated
ο¬ Primary idiopathic (change in the antigenecity or defect in self
recognition)
ο¬ Secondary β drug or virus
ο¬ Isoimmune hemolytic anemia
ο Infectious
ο¬ Equine infectious anemia β macrophage-monocyte system β
erythrophagocytosis by C3
ο¬ Prtozoan parasites βBabesiosis, theileriosis, anaplasmosis,
eperythrozoonosis, hemobartonellosis, ehrilchiosis, trypanosomiasis
ο Physical and chemical agents β onions, rape or kale, phenothizine in
horses, and methylene blue in cats, glucose-6-phosphate
dehydrogenase deficiency in humans, copper poisoning, cold
hemoglobinurea, postpartutient hemoglobinurea (ATP def.)
ο Mechanical damage to RBCs
10. Anemia of deficient hemoglobin
production
ο Iron deficiency
ο¬ Impaired absorption
ο¬ Excessive loss
ο Copper deficiency β cytochrome oxidases
ο Cobalt deficiency β Vit. B12 β acetic, butyric, and
propionic acid ο succinic acid (methylmalonyl-CoA
mutase containing Vit B12)
ο Megaloblastic anemia β folic acid deficiency β part
of thymidylate synthase for synthesis of DNA
ο Anemia of chronic disorders
ο Anemia of malnutrition
ο Deficiency of vitamin B6 β required for the synthesis
of delta-aminolevulinic acid which forms pyrol ring
and ultimately protoporphyrin β prevents iron
utilization
11. Anemia of Deficient Cell Production
ο Aplastic Pancytopenia β most common in dogs
and cats
ο Infectious β canine and feline parvoviruses and
feline leukemia virus
ο Toxic agents β phenylbutazone,
chloramphenicol, furazolidone, Bracken fern
poisoning
ο Myelophthistic anemia
ο Uremia
ο Pituitary dysfunction, hypothyroidism,
12. Disorders of Hemoglobin
ο Hereditary disorders of Heme synthesis β
pophyrias
ο Methemoglobinemia - ferrous to ferric
form β nitrate and nitrite poisoning
ο¬ In ruminants β nitrate to nitrite and then to
ammonia
ο¬ Poor nutrition and high forage content leads
to poisoning
16. Bovine lymphoma
ο Occure in Two forms
(a) Enzootic bovine leukosis(EBL) or
Adult form of lymphoma .It is caused by bovine leukumia virus (BLV)
(b) Sporadic form . This is rare
Adult bovine lymphoma
ο A febrile disease
ο Wide spread lymphadenopathy ,bilateral
ο Frequent envolvement of heart ,abomasum ,intestine
Diagnosis
ο significant lymphocytosis for several weeks
ο Lymphocyte normal in morphology
21. Caseous lymphadenitis
ο It is chronic suppurative infection of lymph
nodes . Cause by Corynebacterium
Pseudotuberculosis .This disease occur in
all animals but is more common in sheep
and goat .
ο In the goat lymph node of head and neck
are usually involved . In sheep it is usually
a wound infection which occur following
wound infection .
25. ο It is acute Septicemia ,highly pathogenic
disease caused by gram positive ,spore
forming ,bacillary organism .Dog and cats
are relatively resistant .The vegetative
form survive in the open for a short time
but the spores are highly resistant and can
survive for 50 years.
