2. INTRODUCTION
People have been altering the genomes of
plants and animals for many years using
traditional breeding techniques
Artificial selection for specific, desired traits has
resulted in variety of dff org.
But this artificial selection has been limited to
naturally occurring variations
In recent decades, advances in the field of
genetic engineering have allowed precise
control over the genetic changes introduced into
an organism
3. WHAT ARE GMO
Is an organism whose genetic material has
been altered using rDNA
They can be altered with DNA from
bacterium, plant, virus or animal
Sometimes referred to as “ transgenic”
organism
The most common genetically modified
organisms are crop plants
4. EXAMPLES OF GMOS
Foods- canola, soya bean, golden rice and
sweet corn
Medicine- Insulin, hormones and vaccine
Long lasting tomato
7. BENEFITS OF PRODUCING GMO
Creating plants better resistant to weeds,
pest and other disease
Bigger yield to create more efficient use of
land, less use of herbicide and other
pesticide
Food with better texture, flavour and
nutritional value
8. APPLICATION
In Food- fruits are modified to make them
ripen later
In medicine- to produce large amount of pure
human proteins
In medicine- clotting factors for hemophilia
In medicine- human growth hormone to treat
dwarfism
In industries- to produce pharmaceutical
products or tissue implantation
