2. PROCESS OF CHARACTERIZATION
Characterization is the process by which writer reveals the
personality of the characters.
According to Hudson ,
“ Tom Jones is the greatest novel of the
eighteenth century. In structure and in richness of
characterization, Tom Jones stands unrivalled in
Jones history of English fiction.”
In this novel, most of the character represent the complete
picture of the art of the English society of Fielding time.
3. Imperfect and moral hero.
Through whom Fielding
gives voice to his philosophy
of virtue.
Shows as if he is only
capable of doing at the
moment and not what the
consequence might be in the
future.

4. SOPHIA WESTERN
Fielding’s beautiful, generous
heroine.
She treats people of all classes
with such respect that one landlady
cannot believe she is a gentlewoman.
Her hatred for Blifil.

Respected gentleman.
“ The favorite of both nature
and fortune.”
Tom’s guardian.
His name is “Allworthy”, or
worthy for “all.” He is generous
with his money and help the
poor people.
6. BLIFIL
The antagonist of Tom
Jones.
Fielding portray his
character as a villain very
well.
He hate Tom because he
wants to marry with Sophia.
He always thinking what
can he gain from the
situation.
