3. Historical Background of the Two plays
● The post war literature
● Osborne's play offers a revolutionary
change on behalf of the betterment for the
working class and orient's the
enlightenment to demonstrate the social
corruption and unfairness for the British
middle, upper classes. While Buckett’s
work addresses more to the whole
humanity.
4. ● Osborne uses realism to show
dissatisfaction towards the society's ugly
side in both constitutional and spousal.
Buckett rejects any realistic view, and has
a surreal point about the earth that carries
no logic behind.
● Both types include characters from
ordinary people.
5. Language use
● Osborne's use of language is a reflection of
'realism’ (what economical status and class
ranks the characters have and how well and
poorly-educated they are stand out the their
speeches and ways of using language).
● While backett does not believe in the real
aim of language (language is used in a
functionless way, with no intebt at
conveying any kind of meaning)
7. Themes of both work
Waiting for Godot
● Humor and the absurd
● Waiting, Boredom
● Modernism and
postmodernism
● Time
● Humanity,
companionship,
suffering and dignity
Look Back in Anger
● Class and education
● Suffering and anger
vs. Complancy
● Disillusionment and
nostalgia
● Gender
● Love and Innocence
8. ● Meaningless and absurdity
● The theme of ‘Past’ is similar
● Both share a feeling of being lost in passimistic
views
● Class system and it's distinction in the society
(Jimmy's criticism, Pozzo and lucky relation.)
● Waiting for Godot is Actionless action of
“waiting” and Look Back in Anger is more
developed with the tirades of Jimmy Porter
rather than outside forces
● The structure of the play by Osborne is more
‘proper’ than that of Beckett.
