Nepal is a landlocked
country. It is one of the
poorest countries in the
world. It is one of the
lowest indices of the
Human development Index
of UNO. Nepal had only the
least effect on world map
prior to the establishment
of UNO. Actual concept of
Project began in Nepal in
1951 with a grant
assistance of US$ 100,000
by USA.Project

Project management in developing
countries:
• First appeared in the centralised
planning model of the Soviet Union
in 1930’s.
• Increased flow of foreign assistance
from developing countries during
1950s and 1960s gave impetus to the
project model.
• By 1970s pure project and matrix
project organisation started to be
used.
3. Current Status
Nepal runs projects by using mainly three models.
Turnkey project
Generally, there are investments of foreign
countries or of donor agencies in such projects.
When an international tender is requested to
conduct such project, it is known as Turnkey
Project, Melamchi Drinking water project is its
examples.
Donor Executed project
The donor agency invests all the amount required
in such project and executes all the works by itself
until the project completes. All the investments
and executions are conducted by the donor agency
itself and after the completion of the project it is
handed over to the concerned party and such
project is known as Donor Executed project,
Marsyangdi Hydro electricity project, Lumbini
Drinking water and Cleanliness program, etc are
its examples.
Nationally Executed Project
The national entrepreneurs themselves prepare and
execute such projects. Both the public and private
sectors invest in such projects. No matter whether
the investors are national or international citizens,
if the project is executed by the Nepali (national)
entrepreneurs, then such project is called the
nationally executed project.
BOT(Build,operate,Transfer)
modality has emerged for
road construction.
Eg: Kathmandu-Hetauda fast
track
Foreign Direct Investment
has led to greated use of
Project Management.
Implementation of Nepal’s
development plan depends
upon Project Management
approach.
