SITUATION:
You are a new nurse in an emergency department. You observed a very busy area
where rooms are filled with patients awaiting attention.The triage nurse is responsible
for prioritizing who is seen first.This often necessitatesthat certain patients are not
seen for long periods of time so that more seriously ill patients maybe treated or
admitted.You notice that on a regular basis, waiting patientsand families become
very angry. Often, nurses repeat blood work for patients and there is general
disorganization.
QUESTIONS:
 What type of leadershipstyle would be effective in this situation?
I would choose to a democratic type of leader.This type of leadership encourage
personal and professional growth and focus on team success, it also encourages
feedback, involvement, and communication from team members.This nursing
leadershipstyle works well in quality assurance and performance improvement roles
and diversity and inclusionroles.
 What leadershipbehaviours would be necessary to bring more structure to the
flow and treatment of emergencypatients?
Basic emergency behaviours include:
 Having vision and organizational values.
 Implementing strategic and tactical planning.
 Betterment of communication, negotiationand collaboration skills.
 Emergency department demands work environments for nurses that are most
conducive to patient safety. It rely on more changes in not just in physical
environment, but also in the beliefsand practices of nurses.
