The main age group that took my survey were aged between 16-17, with 19+ being
the lowest. This is probably the case, as 16 to 17 would be the average age for
college students. This shows how we will get a review from generations that have
been born into a world of Netflix and tablets.

Those who did the survey, freely put in their favourite genre. The list shows me that the
audience mostly like Action and comedy. Horror was in third place with three people
mentioning it, then along came fantasy with only two people. This shows me how the
audience mainly favours Action or comedy base style films. This shows they like
violence or fighting, and having a laugh.

This shows to me how those doing the survey is able to watch their films. Most of the
audience like to stream their films on Netflix, other is the second most important. I’m
assuming that its people who get films online. Five people still buy Dvds to watch
films, and only two people get their films of the tv.

The Audience have mixed opinions on the fantasy question, as the plot and cgi

The majority audience said they preferred harry potter as their favourite film. The second
most popular answer would be Lord of the rings. This shows me how the audience like
fake worlds. Some didn’t really know what their favourite film was, showing me it isn’t
their preferred genre. There was only one which said star wars to be their favourite film.

The audience speak out on how often they watch Films in general in the past 7
days. 6 people claim to watch films a lot, showing me that the e audience must
love watching films, and may understand whats good or not when seeing them.

This survey shows me of the opinions that the audience has on my story line. It was
all mainly positive, saying its good, and a good idea. Some were saying it may be
hard to produce, as it may be a challenge to put in all the graphics. One comment
was confused of the story line. This as a whole shows to me that it will be a big job,
but it will be a successful plot.

This is a rating of the fantasy film Jumanji. This
shows how those at age 18 to 29 prefer the film
more than the other ages. I think this is because the
film was in their era. With the genders, it shows that
females have higher ratings for the film compared to
men. Maybe men don’t like it as much, as it doesn't’t
have much fighting in it, and women may like it for
the fun side of the film. The 18 year old women have
the highest rating for the film. With males, the age
range 18 to 29 prefer the film the most. Probably as
its their era, and good classic films.
For the budget, they made more in the box office
than they actually spent making it. This shows how
much of a successful film it is, as its made many
sales in dvds.
With the user reviews on imdb, the majority have 10
stars. One saying it was like they were sucked in the
board game, another saying it was brilliant and
another saying it was sheer entertainment. These
audience reviews show how loved he film is,
showing why many buy the box office.

The ratings on the previous side are for the classic film
Groundhog day. With the imdb ratings (top right), you can see
it appears least to the 18-29 age range. Its still a high number,
but it must appear less to them, as they must have been very
young when it came out, and took a while to appreciate it. You
could say what for under 18s, but their parents must have
introduced the film to them. With the separate gender ratings,
it sems that males have a higher rating than what women do.
This must be because the main role is a male character. With
Both men and women, the film attracts 33-44 year olds. This
is probably because of the age of the actors in the film, as it
lacks under 25s.
The box office for the film overlaps the budget of the film. This
shows how successful the film is, as people ended up buying
the film on dvd. Im assuming that the 33 year olds rated the
film high, as they may have bought it when it came out, as its
their era.
With the comments, there are so many users that gave 10 out
of 10. one user had said that the film was terrific. Another user
had said it has a fantastic script. This shows the love the
audience has for the film.

The previous slide is the rates and the reviews for
Star wars episode IV. The IMDB ratings (top right)
shows the gender ratings. 18 year olds mostly
appreciate the film. This is probably because they
were introduced to it, and liked it. Males have a
higher rating than females. This is probably because
of the fact that there are more male leads in the film,
and only one female main character.
The budget is so much more lower than the box
office for the film, showing that the film is extremely
successful. This probably shows people still buy it
today, as 18 year olds are rating it high, even though
it isn’t their era.
Star wars also has high ratings. On rotten tomatoes,
they get a lot of 5 out of 5s. One high rate says that
the film changed the cinema, another saying how
iconic the film is; and lastly, one saying that the film is
such a classic. The last comment shows how loved
the film is now, and the other ones saying the film
revolutionised the film industry.
28. For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this you should then be able to produce an
audience outline that you intend to target. For this you could also produce an audience profile.
As a whole, the secondary research shows me that depending on the plot of the story, males prefer fantasy to
women. Males prefer fantasy's that isn't very light hearted, or isn’t about close friends for example groundhog day
isn't light hearted, as he keeps committing suicide, and star wars is about an evil empire. But women prefer family
friendly fantasies where its all a laugh like jumanji, where they play a board game, and weird situations happen. It
also shows me how the films always get a big box office payment from the end of it. This shows me how
successful and how loved the genre is, as many people go out to buy the films. This is good news for my film, as it
links in with the genre , and it shows that my film may be loved. With age ranges,. with the primary research, it
shows me that most of the audience look out for is the CGI and the plot of the film. With the age range, the 18
year olds seems to be the top raters on IMDB. This gives me the idea of what age range approves the most with
the genre. With primary research, the majority were under 18s. The majority of the audience gave the genre 7/10.
This benefits me, as i include special effects I’m my film. It also shows how the genre itself is approved by the
majority of my audience, as its not a favourite, but it is a good genre. This links with the secondary research, as
the films that were reviewed, have other genres involved with them, which maybe the reason for why the films are
watch, and why the people approve with fantasy, as they are usually involved with good films.
My target audience is under 18 possibly males. The reason for this is because the genre is more loved by under
18s than the other age range, and the boys seem to like films involving time travel or teleporting, as star wars has
light speed, and groundhog day is about a man (bill Murray) being stuck in a time loop.
29. Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC
might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and
what you are allowed to include.
30. UNIVERSAL: Suitable for all. U is where it is suited for ages 4 and over . There is little violence
and horror in these types of films. With sexual behavior, there is only kissing involved or
innuendos. There is little violence, which can be perceived as unrealistic.
PERENTAL GUIDENCE: this is where children under 8 are recommended to watch with
parents. With threats, it cant be too intense. Violence, it must be mild, or justified with context
like comedy. Language can only be mild. There cant be bad behavior in which children are
likely to copy.
12A and 12- this contains material that don’t suit under 12s. Strong language can be
used in context. gory moments are aloud, but need to be in context. Moderate violence
is aloud, buy cant be too explicit. Sexual content must be discreet. Physical threat is
aloud, and horror sequences can be aloud too.
15- No one younger than 15 may view. There is dangerous behavior (hanging etc) but it
cant dwell on, strong violence (blood), sexual activity is portrayed. And there is strong
language. The use of drugs can be seen, but it cant go on to persuade people to use it.
http://www.bbfc.co.uk/sites/default/files/attachments/BBFC%20Classification%20Guideli
nes%202014_5.pdf
18- No one under 18 is allowed to view. The violence is detailed and very explicit. Sexual
images are explicit, (but it can be classed as 18 if its primary). Very bad language, and the
movies breech criminal law. The films causes risks, which shouldn’t be repeated.
Restricted 18- Only available in licensed cinemas and licensed sex
shops. This shows strong sexual material.
31. http://www.bbfc.co.uk/sites/default/files/attachments/BBFC%20Classification%20Guidelines%202014_5.pdf
I think that my short film should be rated Universal (Suitable for all). the reason for this is because
there is no bad violence (the most violence is caused to the watch itself, not the human) or
Unsettling scenes that would cause anxiety to the children (as there is no gore or evil monsters in
it), as there is no deep storyline to the film, as its just about transporting to places, which goes
wrong. There is no deep or personal storyline like the world ending, or the man is dying. Lastly, the
language in the film. There is only one line in the film, and it doesn’t have any cursing in it or
inappropriate words. The reason in which I didn’t choose it to be a PG is because of the language,
and because of the plot. There isn’t any bad behaviour in which children are likely to copy, as the
storyline may give them an imagination of having a magical watch. Also, it lacks violence in the film,
as nobody is fighting. I’m aloud infrequent threat. It isn’t a big problem for my film, but the scene
where my watch breaks may be tense.
32. Research potential production techniques you might want to use or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera, editing, story, sound, etc
You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask potential target audience what
they think.
You will need to add extra slides!
With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it completely
In this slide, i will be talking about the potential ideas, inspired from other films
in which i could include in my own film. I will be explaining what the product is,
an example of what film it is in, and how I can potentially include that product
in my own film. There will be video footage of examples of the product, and
there will be pictures to demonstrate scenes, or effects of the products. The
themes of the product I will be looking at, are a part of camera, Story, and
editing effects.
33. Dolly Zoom. This effect is where the camera zooms either in
or out, whilst the camera moves backwards or forwards. So if
it moves forwards, it zooms backwards the way it is used in
films is usually to go close up onto faces, and push the
background away, to make the face the main appeal of the
shot. It can also be used in different ways, to tease the way
scenery looks. The way it fits in with the plot is usually to
capture somebody's reaction to a bad event. The camera
pushes away the background, as its irrelevant to the
situation, and captures the reaction of the person. I would
consider using it in a different way .The way I could possibly
adapt this effect in my short film is by adding the effect to the
watch when it is covered in water. This could be added, so
that the audience can focus on on the watch, and see the
damage that has been caused t it, and it also adds the
drama to the story, as the focus from the camera aims at the
watch, it makes it important to the story. Another potential
way I could use it is by filming my reaction to the broken
watch. This could over dramatize the situatuation.
34. The second product in the list is a lightning effect.
This effect tends to be used to represent time
travel. Shows like family guy(Stewie’s time
machine) show lightning bolts when time travel
takes place. It represents overpower of technology,
as this technology is extreme. One famous film
Back to the future uses it. It is used when the
Delorian just hits 88mph and is about to go to the
past. The bolts go around the car, like it is covering
up. It looks like the car is going into a portal, into a
new time zone.
With my film, i would like an electric ball to build up
on the character before he is about to teleport into
a new area. The ball will compress when he
disappears. This will show a process of how the
teleporting works, rather than cutting.
35. This product is where The film explains the situation
from the film shots, and not the audio. One good
example would be the beggining of star wars IV. It
starts of with a fight scene, indicating war, then
shows darth vader. We already know darth vader
is evil, from the fact his first action is chocking
someone. Nobody told us he was evil. Yet.
Another example is Furious 7. We see Decard in
the hospital. As soon as he goes down, he bombs
someone. This indicates he is evil, as he
randomly killed someone for no reason.
Because i have one line in my film, i need to include
this method. The way i will use it is by reflecting
that the watch is magic, and making it clear that
ive suddenly move locations. I could do this by
having a close up at the watch when it is in use.
37. With the filming process of the first film, we used a cannon camera, a Sherpa tripod ( to hold
the camera on, to get steady shots), an apple mac (to edit the videos on), and the college
premises. With the cannon camera, we used it to not just film the footage, but to add zoom
effects with it rather than editing it after. We did the zoom manually, so that we can have it
the speed of zoom we want it to be. The tri pod was good for letting us hold the camera in
different angles. It was good, as the camera never shake, and the tripod kept it in place of
the 180 degree line. We had to do an extra large shot of the college, we did this by putting
the camera far from the college, and panning it to show a front exterior of the building. We
decided to do this, to show the full area of where the scene is set. The next scene was a
large shot. We used a zoom effect when the characters were moving closer to the camera,
we zoomed out. This was so we can keep the flow of the moving characters without having
to move the camera back, or making them block the camera, ruining the transition to the next
scene. For the next scene, we used a medium shot of one of the characters, to put the main
focus on them. With the last three shots which we had to make up, we did a close up, a long
shot, and a medium shot. The close up was for the character talking, as the focus is on him,
the long shot was to show the characters running to the end, and the medium was to show
the shot in the lift, as that isn’t focusing on the background.
What worked
One thing which did work was the shots which we filmed. The long shots to the close ups all
went as planned, and came out successfully. Another strength was the last three shots which
were our choice. They all had the right focus and shots, and it all fitted in well with the
situation in the story.
What didn’t work
The thing which didn’t work would be the tripod. The tripod kept slanting the camera slightly
to the side. This could effect the picture in the shot. Secondly, the camera sometimes
crashed when we pressed the play button. This is bad, as this may show that the camera
has an issue, and could possibly have a fault with saving the videos. To improve on these
two points would be the double check the gear before using it. The camera , I would have to
test it out, and see if there is any faults on it before shooting the real thing. With the tripod, i
would need to put a camera on it, and see if the footage on it is slanted.
LS (Zoom
effect)
38. What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
With filming a practice video, I will try to include some features that I
put in my real short film. One thing which I will like to include some of
the shot types. The Long shot will be perfect for my short film, as it
allows the camera to pick up on surroundings, showing where the
location is. Which is perfect for my film as its about teleportation. The
close ups is another good angle which can be used in the film, as its
good for showing reaction (especially when the watch breaks), but it
can also show the mysterious watch too, showing the main feature of
the short film. Another camera effect I would like to use in my short film
is the zoom effect. There wont be much walking around in the short
film, as its about teleporting but its good for other effects. It would
work well for the Brocken watch scene, as I can zoom into the
characters face, showing the fear he has, as the zoom effect gives a
hit in the face effect.
Also, I would like to stick with the 180 degree rule line in my short film.
Even though the play mainly consists of one person, it may still get
confusing, as I do multiple scene changes. So by sticking to 180
degree filming, allows the camera to show one side of the area the
character is in without swapping sides, as that may lead to confusion.
39. With editing, I used premier pro to edit the footage(s) all together. I used YouTube to
get the copyright/royalty free music. With premier pro, it allowed me to adjust the video
by adding the effects onto the footage. One tool which I used Was the colour
adjustment tool (RGB Curves). This aloud me to tint the colour style on the video. In my
case, it aloud me to add darker colours to make the scene look more dramatic. Also, I
used transitions in my practice film, in order to get a smooth scene change without
there being a cut sound in the audio. Lastly, i used the Slow motion tool in Premier pro.
This aloud me to slow down the running scene to make it more dramatic and tense.
With the process of making the practice film, i needed to pick the best scenes from the
shot footage. Next, i would lay them out in the order which i would like them to go in I
would then cut them to have a new angled shot transition, in order for there to be no
continuity with late transitions. I also have black outs in the practice task so that it gives
a dramatic and teasing tension.
What worked
The first thing which worked well is the use of premier pro. With previous experience
with the program from the last project, I was able to do things quickly, especially editing
the video. I didn’t really struggle with editing the video, as the cuts, and the colour filter
mostly worked well. Another strength I had was the effects added to the video, the
colour scheme worked well, as it over exadurated the video, and so did the slow motion
What didn’t work
This didn't necessarily not work, but could have been better. I felt that the lift scene was
too short, which i could have improved by slowing the video down. Also, the second
transition at the delays after the line, as it waits for a while, then transitions, i could
have cut that scene to have a smoother transition.
40. What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
With the editing part of the practice video, I Would like to
feature some elements to my real short film. One item which
I would like to bring to my real film is transitioning the
scenes. The video will just be a cut transition, so that the
different locations don’t look like they are in the same area,
but the audio will transition, so you don’t hear a cut noise in
the video, and so the teleportation transition shows time
hasn’t gone forward, as the sound is going with the same
flow with the next shot. Also, I could potentially use the slow
motion tool for the scene where the water spills on the
watch, as it will give more tension, and show more detail of
the tragedy. Another element in which i could use is the
short film is colour adjustments to the video. For green
screen scenes, to make it look more natural, i may need to
tint the overlaying pictures, so that the locations of the two
images look like they are in the same place. Plus, the tint
tool (RGB Curves) can be good for the whole film, to give it
a tint of darkness to over excaudate the situation of the
whole short film.
41. With the Audio process of the Shaun of the dead clip (and a bit of the practice film),
I used a tape recorder (to make my own sound effects), YouTube/Internet (for
copyright/royalty free sound effects/Music, and garage band (to make my own
music). With the tape Recorder i would go around the college premises recording
footsteps, doors and other things which I listed down to match with the SOTD clip.
By making homemade sound effects, it allows me make the sound I want it to be,
as I can make the audio the way I want you to, and change it if its not good enough.
With YouTube, i got some Lift music which was royalty free, for the supermarket
scene. I also got a zombie growl from the internet for the bit when the camera pans
to the zombies. By using the internet, it saves me time for making my own sounds
which would take a while as its also good for last minute decisions e.g.. Adding the
zombie noise. Lastly, the use of garage band. I used it to make my own eerie music
to fit in with the Apocalypse theme in SOTD. I used 4 different instruments to
construct the backing song, and had them play different notes. By using Garage
band, It allows me to be creative, and it is sort of more easier than finding royalty
music, as the pre made music may not always be perfect for you, whereas by
making it yourself allows you to adjust the music if its not right for you. With premier
pro, there was an audio track mixer tool where you can adjust the sound. With me, i
gave it a low pass effect, so it wouldn't be too loud.
Strengths
The strengths i had with the audio was the use of garage band. The music worked
very well with the clip, and constructing it was easy too, as the beats were randomly
touched keys, which I experimented with, And turned out to be good when all the
sounds were put together. Also, another strength would be the placement of the
sound effect. I thought the continuity worked well, as no sound misplaced the clip,
and that goes for the supermarket music transition, as it faded in when getting
closer to it, which worked well, as it gave the effect that Simon Pegg was walking
towards music.
Weakness
The stuff which didn't quite work for the Audio would be firstly, the audio track mixer.
Whenever i tried to edit only one audio with the tool, it would do it to the other
sounds which would make the audio sound odd, and unnatural. Another issue i had
with audio would be editing it. Sometimes when editing an audio, another one would
go silent for some reason which i would then have to re edit from the last time i
saved the work.
42. What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
With audio, I would also like to add some elements to my
short film which I included to my SOTD. One thing which i
could possibly include is my own made backing music on
garage band. This allows me to be more creative with my
work, and it also allows me to be able to re edit the music on
garage band if I'm not happy with it. Also, another thing which
i would like to consider into my short film is adding Sound
effects. I still don’t know if the audio will be from the internet or
my own work, but i know i will have to include some audio
from the internet, as it will save time for me to edit my work,
rather than everything being home made. If I were to make
my own audio, I would need to do it from garage band, as I
may need some un natural sound effects for example a zaps
and sizzles when teleporting, which I can do on garage band.
From the internet, i may need to get some tense heart beating
music from you tube which will go for the slow-motion scene
to give a tensing feeling when watching the scene. If I can’t
find any I like, then i will just make my own on garage band.
43. List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you should consider issues from each of these
categories:Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational
One thing which could effect my production would probably be time. The issue with time would be doing everything in it,
meaning sorting out audio which goes in two cases where i either spend ages finding some; or i take ages making it.
filming (which would probably take more than an hour), as i have to organise the set, make sure nobody is going to be in
the way. And editing. There is always going to be some fault with editing, if its something like the program crashing, or
new decisions. I will need to sort this in a given time, and make sure I don’t waste any of it on one of these points.
Another constraint is organisation. If everything on the computer is all muddled up and not sorted, then im really going to
struggle to find what I'm looking for, potentially loosing my work. Also, this goes for not pre planning. If I don’t organise
what I want to include in my short film, then i’m going to be wasting time brainstorming ideas rather than doing my work.
Plus, technical side could effect my work. There is a chance that my camera may have faults with it eg. Low battery or
memory problems. This will effect my work, as it will keep me from actually editing the final work, as the camera is
brocken. Also, this goes for Macs too. With premier pro, it may crash mid way through work, and knowing me, i dont save
constantly. This would mean for me to either start from square one again or waste time waiting for the program to respond.
With the personnel side, the person may not fully understand what i want to be in my short film that was my individual
idea, leaving me to have finished work with videos that arnt the way i wanted it to look. Also, the person may be busy with
their own work, leaving me to waste time to find another personnel.
Another point is costing. Even though everything is pre brought (The watch is currently mine), there is a chance that i may
end up breaking objects during filming process. The reason why i say this is because pouring water on my watch could
damage it, leaving me to have to buy a new watch for myself. Also this could go for damaging lenses which ic could get
finned for
Lastly, location. This may be an issue for when i am filming in public spaces, as I may have to wait until nobody blocks the
camera space. One location which is a worry is where the lift is. As I need to use it for a scene, there may be people in the
way of it either waiting, or leaving the lift which will ruin the cuts, making it complicated to get a final shot.
44. As a whole, I had areas in all of the aspects which I
enjoyed doing. One thing which I did enjoy would be
creating my own music on garage band. I enjoyed
this, as it aloud me to get creative and experiment
with music. Plus, it’s the first time I've actually made a
successful beat from scratch on garage band, so
that’s another reason why I enjoyed it, as everything
was working well with the beat. Also, I enjoyed editing
the separate audio to the Shaun of the dead. I
enjoyed it as, it was a challenge for me, as it lead me
to put the sound in specific areas, and seeing a good
outcome. Lastly, I enjoyed editing the practice video
which we made. I specifically enjoyed adding my own
touches to the video, eg. RGB curves, and adding the
backing music to the film. I enjoyed it, as it aloud me
to get creative with turning simple videos into an
“action” style film.
