3. INTRODUCTION
• What are polymers?
Polymerization is the process of
combining many small
molecules known as monomers into a
covalently bonded chain or network.
4. Activities
In the first activity we experimented with the
absorption of the polymer pellets. We found put that
Polyacrylamide is one of the polymers that can
absorb water and increased in size.
However, when we added salt water it nearly
decreased in size because of diffusion, the water
escaped the polymer pellets and went to the salt
crystals. We have noticed that this polymer can
absorb water 200 times its size and is mainly used in
irrigation purposes and diapers.
Act 1. Changing Polymers pellets Act 2. Hunting Polymers Products
We have discovered That
Polymers are everyday used in our life in the form
natural polymers / synthetic polymers , in food,
medicines, cosmetics, utensils, furniture, construction
and the list goes on. Polymers list starts from
polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyester, polystyrene,
nylon, rayon, animal protein, cellulose etc.
5. Act 3. Comparing Viscosity Of
Polymer
We learnt the
concept of viscosity
of polymer liquids.
Through this activity
we discovered the
property of viscosity
and it’s importance
to the different
functions polymers
preform.
Act 4. Testing The Strength and
Strechability Of Polymers Films.
We learnt to prepare polymer films using PVA (poly
– vinyl Acetate) in different concentrations and
noticed that as the concentration increases, liquids
are more viscous, it became harder to spread on the
films.
After we tested the strength and elasticity of
polymers. We applied weights from the tip of the
polymer to test it’s strength to withstand weight and
also elasticity We learned that some types of
polymers are stronger than the other and some of
them are more flexible.
Activities
Design Project: Designing
Humidity Sensor.
We designed a non-electrical humidity
sensor using polymers like Poly Vinyl
Alcohol, solvent and indicator. We
spread the solution on a glass slide to
make a polymer sensor film which
when exposed to water vapors changed
color from a dark blue shade into a
pinkish purple color, indicating
humidity.
6. We Are Looking Forward To Create Smart
spectacles with heating device.
We use Polymers to sense humidity on the
glasses and a heating device to heat the glasses
after sensing the moisture.

Our product idea
7. By Creating Smart Glasses:
• We can get rid of fog.
• Its more effective way than anti-fog(Cream-spray-
wipes). We do not have to order refills
• Last Forever More Than Anti-Fog(Cream-Spray-
Wipes)
• Doesn’t Damage The Environment.
Smart Glasses
Benefits
8. • We expect that polyvinyl alcohol
humidity sensors will help to sense
the humidity from the glass and
operate a heating system that will
evaporate the fog.

9. SMART GLASSES
METHODS AND MATERIALS
• Materials: As a demonstration we used polyvinyl alcohol to sense for humidity
and cobalt chloride to indicate the presence of water molecules by changing the
color from blue to pink. Both of them work together as a humidity sensor.
• Method: We are using a humidity sensor around the frame of the glasses so it can
sense for fog (presence of water molecules) then the indicator will indicate by
(emitting a beam of light/or change in polymer color/or making a sound). after
that, the heating system will start by heating the lenses with a heat conductor
material around the lenses. We suggest using carbon fiber frame that does not
contain epoxy, so it wont conduct heat to the user’s skin. Also, carbon fiber is a
good choice as it is strong and light in Weight.
10. Smart Glasses
Benefits
1- Solve The Problem Of Glasses Getting Foggy
2- Getting Rid Of Anti-Fog (Cream-Spray-Wipes)
3- Lasting longer more than anti-Fog materials
4-Provide Comfort to the person wearing glasses
5- Doesn’t Weight Much
11. • For further improvements in the future, we highly
recommend to test our product idea in real working
sensor, and try it with people to collect a better data,
and know the potential challenges in our product.
• We also recommend to make further studies on
alternative materials to be used as indicator.

12. CONCLUSIONS
We have learned lot through our experience with al-bairaq:
• We have learned that some types polymers can absorb water 200
times its size.
• Secondly we discovered some types of polymers and some examples
of them.
• We also learn viscosity property of polymer solutions and to make
polymer films and learn their properties of tensile strength and
elasticity.
• Finally and most importantly, we are inspired to innovate and create
a new product through our experience.
