What are composites materials?
Composite material, also called
composite, a solid material that
results when two or more
different substances, each with
its own characteristics, are
combined to create a new
substance whose properties are
superior to those of the original
components.

THE S-
PIPE
Introduction
Oil pipelines are used in almost all
countries like Qatar to transfer oil
from one location to another. The
current pipelines are mostly made
of stainless only which has great
benefits but also has some
drawbacks.

THE S-
PIPE
The problem
When the oil is extracted from wells,
water and rocks comes out with it
with huge pressure. This leads to
starches on the inner surface which is
known as Pipeline Dents. It causes
eventually corrosion and leakage of
the oil.

THE S-

PROJECT
AIM
The projects main purpose is to
design new oil pipelines made from
new and improved materials. What
we are trying to accomplish is a
solid, corrosion resistant anti
scratch and leak pipes. These
features are non-existent currently.
However, with the use of
composite materials we can
accomplish it.

RESULTS
BENEFITS
RECOMMENDATION
S We are sure that our project is able to
enhance the performance of the oil pipelines
in many countries. The combination of the
previously stated composite materials will
give scratching resistance and light weight
pipelines.

Carbon steel
Aluminum
15. Cost study
• The S-Pipe is made from three main materials which are locally
manufacture by Qatari companies like Qatalum, Qatar Steel and Qatar
Rubber
• Raw stainless steal in Qatar approximately costs 2200 QR per ton
• Raw aluminum is a little more expensive than stainless steel at a price of
3720 QR per ton approximtly
• Neoprene rubber cost approximately 90 QR per m2
• The S-Pipe will use 50% less of steel than regular pipe decreasing the cost
by half
• The price of the imported pipeline approximately is $5.2 million/mile
• Based on this rough study its expected to that a locally manufacture
pipeline is less expensive than an important pipeline
18. CONCLOSION
Composite materials are very beneficial
because it provides the good property of
each combining material to give excellent
results.
In Al-Bairaq we learned a lot about
composites and we were able to come up
with a product that can help Qatar and the
world to its economic and environmental
benefits.
19. ACKNOWLEDGME
NT
Many thanks to our teachers, school and AL-BAIRAQ team
from Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University
for supporting us during our journey with AL-BAIRAQ.
Also, I would like to thank Al-BAIRAQ partners UNESCO and
Qatar National Commission.
