3. Introduction
A “biodegradable” material has the ability to
break down, safely and relatively quickly, by
biological means, into the raw materials of
nature and disappear into the environment.
4. Activities
Activity 1:
Comparing Packing Materials.
Activity 2:
Processing biodegradable materials
and comparing their mechanical
properties.
Activity 3:
Measuring the Degradation Rate of
Biodegradable Martials.
Activity 4:
Designing a Medicine Delivery
Device.
5. Project Idea
Plant it and Forget it
Introduction
Many people like to have their own gardens in their houses where
they plant and enjoy gardening.
Gardening is also a fun activity that’s is good for enhancing the
mood and good for the environment.
Millions of plats/flowers pot are manufactured and used yearly.
These pots are usually made of plastic (synthetic polymer) that does
not biodegrad .
Aim of the work
The main purpose of this project it to make plants pots made from
natural materials that produce no waste since its biodegradable. On the
contrary it will help the agriculture since it degrades naturally to CO2
and water.
6. Plant it and Forget it Hypothesis
It is expected from this project, to be able to garden and plant plants
and flowers with minimal or no waste.
Gardening and plantation in Qatar is expected to increase
especially with the blockade.
The amount of plastic waster produced globally will decrease if
manufacture internationally.
7. Plant it and Forget it
Methods and Materials
To make these pots the following materials
where uses
1. Dry tree leaves.
2. Starch.
3. Gelatin.
4. Old newspapers.
5. colors.
9. Plant it and Forget it
Results
The biodegrade pots made from natural materials
The pots are also strong enough to handle packaging and shipment
The pots will degrade which leads to cleaner environment
10. Plant it and Forget it
Recommendations
Its recommended to have further studies and
trails on this project
This project can be adopted by Qatari
companies or ministries to increase agriculture
11. Conclusions
Through our participation in Al-Bairaq, we
learned a lot about new scientific concepts like
biodegradable materials
We worked as a group to perform fun
experiments and come up with our own project
12. Acknowledgment
I would like to thank Al-Bairaq partners UNESCO, Qatar
National Commission.
Also, Many thanks to my teachers, school and AL-Bairaq
team from Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar
University for supporting us during our journey with a AL-
Bairaq.
