Module 3 wk 4 assignment 2
TeachNOW
Kindergarten
D.L. Perez Elementary School
Mrs. Arcala's Summer School Class 2017
TA: Ms. Tamar (Photographed)
This was an project-based assignment we did about recycling and planting. We thought of two ways we can help protect our planet earth. Most of it is covered from the video on YouTube. It is a compilation video about Earth Day and the importance of recycling, and other ways to protect our planet.
That was the sole purpose of the project, besides teaching the basic needs of a plant.
I used this resource below as an inspiration for ideas about the project by using the environment as a tool for project based learning.

2. Introduction & Learning
Outcomes
• In observance of Earth Day, students
will learn how the importance of
recycling and to demonstrate how to
care for their plant. They will also learn
the basics of what a plant needs to
survive. In addition, they will learn how
planting will help benefit the health of
our planet earth.
3. Materials Needed-
• Projector & Laptop w/Internet – to watch video
• Recycled Plastic Water bottles
• Blade (for teachers/adults)
• Oil-based paint
• Googly eyes
• Markers
• Glue gun
• Soil
• Seeds or Plant with roots
• Optional* - cotton balls for tails
4. Opening-

5. Step 1- Recycle
• With an enclosed
Parent Letter, ask
your students to
collect as many empty
plastic water bottles
from their home.
These water bottles
will be used to create
small pots for our
plants!
6. Step 2- Cut and Decorate
• In an Elementary class setting,
cutting the water bottles may be too
hard for our young students. Instead,
teacher aids and we teachers can cut
the bottles using a blade. Cut it into
any design. We can make cat
designs, a flower, or even bunnies
for April’s Easter festivities.
Afterwards, allow students to use oil-
based paint to decorate their pots.
Glue-gun some googly eyes, and
we’re good to go! Give a couple of
hours to dry. Don’t forget to poke
holes underneath the pots for the
water to seep out.
7. Step 3- Planting Begins!
• We need to remind the students that
plants need the right amount of
water and sunlight to survive. With
soil and a plant of choice, teachers
can help put soil unto the students’
pots. Seeds can be used instead, but
because of the short amount of time
we had in summer school, we
decided to use ready grown sprouts.
We covered the roots of the plants
within the soil, and then allowed
students to water their own plant.
Remind students to water the plant
daily. How we can tell it needs water
is if the soil is no longer damp.
8. Some Things to Keep in
Mind
• In a regular classroom, with
ample amount of time,
students can use seeds to plant
instead. They can water it
everyday in class, and watch
their seeds sprout into a plant.
Allow students to record and
date every change.
• With this project, students will
learn how to care for a plant,
and the importance of
recycling. You can also go in
depth to even teaching the
parts of a flower.
9. Why I Chose this Project-
Based Activity
• This is a wonderful
project students
can learn about in
honor of Earth
Day. They will
learn to recycle, to
plant, and how to
care for the Earth.
