Culture in Organizations
 Many organizations
often ask, “How do
we build a successful
mentoring culture?”
The below listed steps are key in building
a effective mentoring culture:
1.  Understanding the need
for mentoring:
 Organizations need to be
clear as to why they need a
mentoring culture. Is it to
create promotable talent?
Is it to build skills and
behavior among employees
that will enable employees
to achieve business goals?
Is it for succession
planning?
2. Matching of Mentors to
Mentees:
Matching mentors to mentees is
an important task. Hence, the
selection process needs to be
based on 2 primary factors:
1. The goals of the mentoring
program
2. The ‘fit’ of the mentor to the
mentee
3. Create a Powerful
Design:
The design of a good mentoring
program is a very
‘conscious’ process. The
design will need to take into
account a defined set of
goals and operational
guidelines for the mentoring
program.
4. Internal Marketing of the Mentoring Program:
 To get the mentoring program off the ground it is important
to win cooperation from cross-functional teams and leaders.
Hence it is vital to market the mentoring initiative by
highlighting the benefits of the program for the organization.
5. Training to be a
mentor:
 No one is a ‘born’ mentor.
Hence, providing mentoring
training with a focus on the
skills of mentoring and the
structure of good mentoring
processes is important.
6.Value Based Mentoring:
Mentoring programs need to be
built on a base of strong values that
guide the mentors and mentees in
their interactions. Three key values
are:
1. Accountability and Ownership
2. Creating an environment of open
and honest communication
3. Striving for Excellence
