The Special Populations Department at Chattanooga State Community College aims to promote equality and student success among groups who may face barriers to completing their education. The department is led by Brannon Jones as Special Population & Title IX Coordinator and Bernita Banks as Special Populations Specialist. Services include a textbook lending program, workshops on life skills, resource fairs, and a peer support group for students in non-traditional programs. Students in special population groups such as those with disabilities, single parents, or students in programs where their gender is underrepresented can access these services by self-disclosing and registering for events.

Editor's Notes
Your Special Populations team is Brannon Jones and Bernita Banks.
The Special Populations Department is under the retention leg of Chattahoochee Technical College. We are charged with providing student-centered, comprehensive programming for our students. We want to help our students with internal and external resources. In short, we assist in the retention of groups of students who may have difficulty staying in school.
We have six special populations groups that we works with. These groups are a high priority for us because historically, students in these groups have a higher chance of dropping out or college. (Explain the populations)
Students in on or multiple groups will have access to these resources. (Explain Programs)
Again, non-traditional careers are those careers where 25% or less of a gender is represented in the industry. Here, you can see the programs that CTC offers that lead to non-traditional careers. You can view this same list by visiting the Non-Traditional Career page, under services, on the CTC website.
We are doing a lot for students in non-traditional programs. There is a national push to close gender gaps in high demand fields. With that in mind, we want to provide as many resources and opportunities to our non-traditional program students as possible. Our non-traditional program student peer group is a great way to take advantage of these opportunities (Explain the program)
Everyone isn’t going to fall into one of our special populations student groups. However, there will be a percentage of new students who do. We need everyone to complete the Special Populations self-disclosure form. This will allow us to identify which students we need to work with. Check your CTC email regularly. We will send helpful information to via email. Apply & Register for our activities. For example…. Just because you are a special populations student, doesn’t mean you automatically receive textbooks. You will also need to apply to our Textbook Lending program each semester.
Should you have any questions comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Ms. Bernita Banks for assistance. We travel to different campuses. However, our offices are located in Building C, on the Marietta campus.
