Learning Aims
During this lesson, learners will be able to…
Acquire new vocabulary related to cropping systems and soil health;
Revisit vocabulary related to sustainability;
Revisit the first conditional structure;
Develop reading skills through a reading comprehension practice;
Develop writing skills through exercising;
Develop listening skills by watching a video;
Develop technological skills by solving a ‘true or false’ in Genially;
Use their naturalistic intelligence to reflect on soil health and
sustainable practices;
Develop their critical thinking by reflecting on these practices through
authentic material (a webpage);
Use their linguistic intelligence to read and write.

SUSTAINABILITY To recognize sustainable

CROPPING SYSTEMS To identify different crop

Activities
Hi there! How are you? Welcome to our new unit! 😊
Technology in Agriculture
Before the recess, we discussed about sustainability and how we can
help the environment. We will keep on reflecting on that but, this time,
we are going to focus on soil health.
Activity 1: Pre-reading
4. There are some practices to help farmers be more sustainable. Watch
the following video and then decide which of the following practices and
methods are mentioned:

Word of caution: It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand every single
word. Just try to get a general idea and identify the key words 😉
Which of the following practices/methods are mentioned in the video?
Highlight the ones that apply.
Conservation tillage
Conventional tillage
Bioengineering
Diversifying crops
5. GMOs
Fertilizing
Activity 2: While reading
a) Now you are going to read a text to learn more about the
practices in the video. Skim the text to find them.
Source: O’Sullivan, N. Libbin, J. D. (2011). Agriculture: Book 3 (p. 12). Career Paths. Express
Publishing, Berkshire.
6. b) Read the text again. Then, click on the following link and solve a
True or False exercise:
https://view.genial.ly/60e5d285593a5f0d868327ca/interactive-
content-verdadero-o-falso
In case you can’t solve the exercise online, here I leave you the activity:
TRUE or FALSE?
1. Diversifying a crop system only offers farmers economic benefits.
2. Conventional tillage is more expensive than conservation
tillage in the long term.
3. If farmers diversify, they will need more fertilizers and burn-
down herbicides.
4. Farmers don't need to do much research before diversifying, as
any crop is suitable.
5. There are two methods to diversify: crop
rotation and polyculture.
6. If farmers use zero tillage methods, they will leave crop residues.
Activity 3: After reading
a) According to the text and the video from activity 1 (which you may
want to watch again now), answer:
Which of the sides in the following video (right or left) shows
as soil treated with the conservation tillage method and
which one with the conventional tillage method?
7. Click here to watch:

heFutureofAgriculture
b) Complete the following conditions with a result in the future. Take
a look at the example:
If farmers use zero tillage methods, they will leave crop residues.
1. If farmers diversify their crops, they will obtain____________________
2. If farmers invest in conservation tillage equipment,
________________
3. Before diversifying, farmers________________, if they want to know
which crop is suitable.
8. Activity 4: Extra!
Take a look at the following site about sustainable agriculture. You do not
need to do anything but checking it and reading, if you find something
interesting. We will work on this in our next class 😊
