INTRODUCTION
• It is a unicellular, free living, microscopic microorganism
capable of performing all essential functions of life.
• They possess both DNA and RNA.
• They are prokaryotic microorganism.
• They occur in food, soil, water and all natural environment.
• They can survive extremes of temperature, pH, oxygen and
atmospheric pressure.

SIZE OF BACTERIA
• Bacteria are very small microorganism which are visible under the
microscope.
• Most of the bacteria approximately 0.5μm to 1μm.
• High surface area accounts for higher rate of growth and
metabolism of bacteria.
• An electron microscope is used for clear visualization of internal
structure of bacteria.

• Cocci are small, spherical or oval cell.
• It is derived from Greek word “Kokkos” means berry.

• They are straight rod shaped cell.
• It is derived from Greek word “Bacillus” means stick.
• In some of the bacilli the length of the cell may be equal to width.
