What is Delegation of Authority ?
 Delegation of Authority means division of authority and
powers downwards to the subordinate. Delegation is about
entrusting someone else to do parts of your job.
 Delegation of Authority allows subordinates to be more
active.
 Subordinates are fully accountable to of their actions.
CHARACTERISTICS
 It enables a manager function independently within
the broad limits of authority specified by the
superior.
 The superior doesn’t delegate total authority, but
retains a part of that for himself or herself.
 A manager cannot delegate what he or she doesn’t
poses.
 Delegation doesn’t mean giving away authority, it is
of course a revocable act .
► Whether you are a manager in a big firm or a small
company you need to know how to handle people
you want to run things smoothly .
►The more you know about people the better you will
be get along
DECIDING WHOM TO DELEGATE
 Considering capabilities of the people
 Giving task to appropriate person
 Knowing what people need
Delegation of Authority
Delegations to Management and Staff
The Board of Gerard Lighting has delegated certain defined authorities to the
CEO/Managing Director, certain managers and employees of the Company i
n order to efficiently operate the business, within an appropriate control f
ramework.
Principles of Delegation
• The Board will delegate authority to the Managing Director mana
gement and employees to facilitate efficient decision making.
• The law requires the Board to remain accountable for matters for
which it has delegated authority.
Therefore the Board has implemented a high level of control to all de
legates who exercise authorities on behalf of Board.
• A distinction is required between the authority to approve a
transaction and the authority to execute a contract
• The Board wishes to retain control over its statutory obligations and
key strategic decisions, and to
monitor issues that significantly impact the Company
Advantages of Delegation
 Helps is effective functioning
 Results in quick results
 Reduction in managerial load
 Leads for specialized service
 Motivational factor
 Aid to employee development
 Training ground for executive ability
Disadvantages of Delegation
 Central management is far removed hence makes it difficult
to pinpoint major problems when they occur
 Problem in area of coordination as resulting in confusion
 Lack of close supervision
 Lack of direction
 Lack of accountability
 Keeping an optimum balance between what to delegate to whom and why is an
important leadership challenge for a civil servant.
 It would help in achieving the organizational goals as well as meeting the self
actualization goals of your subordinates.
 However remember that delegation of authority does not absolve you of your
overall responsibility.
 It is your moral and legal responsibility to own if anything goes wrong because it
was your choice .
