1. Production Reflection

2. Process
I first started off making the page completely black. I
did this because I knew that I wanted to have a
member of the band “Slipknot” on the front cover as
the main story. I think black fits the band perfectly.
The colour also fits the overall look the magazine is
going for, so it’s a good place to start. I then
downloaded a font called “Rock’s Death” from the
website “DaFont” I chose this font because its bold
and has an almost stone look to it. I like that you can
see the black background through the letters. The font
fits in well with a rock magazine and has the exact
look and feel I was going for.

3. After I made the background black and added the
title. I started looking for the perfect picture.
After a while of searching I finally found this one.
Originally the picture had orange text above it
and a black background. I removed the
background and the text by using the magic wand
tool. However the text still gave me a few
problems as there was still a bright orange tint at
the top of his head that looked completely out of
place. To remove this I had to use the a soft
rubber tool and slightly rub the very top of his
head out.
I also had a few problems with the size of the text
and the position of the picture. At first the text
was too small and the picture was in the very
centre. In the final product I have moved the
picture over to the right slightly to make more
room for other things.

4. Process
I then looked online and found out information about this years
upcoming “Riot Fest” I looked at the line up announcements online
and put some of the biggest bands logos on the front cover along
with the Riot Fest logo. I did this because Fans of the bands will
instantly recognise the logos and will be drawn to the magazine. I
wanted to have the Riot Fest logo on the front cover because it’s a
big festival and many people attend each year. The festival more or
less targets the same demographic of people as my magazine witch
means the logo is instantly recognisable to potential customers. I
chose a red version of the logo because not only does it stand out
when everything else is black and white, but it also fits in with the
back of Corey Taylors jacket witch has a red “Slipknot” logo on it.
I looked at existing magazines for inspiration and one of the ones I
was looking at featured a “Free poster” on the front. I decided to do
the same on my magazine. I chose a “Paramore” poster because it is
black and white witch is the colour scheme I was going for with my
magazine front cover. It also has the word “riot” in bright orange
witch stands out and catches peoples eye. I placed the picture
directly across from the “Riot fest” Logo because they are the only
two pictures that have different colours other than black or white. I
think positioning them directly across from each other helps spread
out the colours and doesn’t draw too much attention to one thing.

5. At this stage I also added text overlapping Corey Taylor.
I did this because he is the main story in this magazine.
I used the same font in the words “interview with” as
the magazines title. I did this because it fits in well with
the overall look of the magazine. I then got an I image
of “Corey Taylors” logo this also fits the look of the font
used. I then got the logos of both of his bands. I
specifically looked for white ones so they wouldn’t look
too out of place. I don’t think these logos need to be
different colours to stand out as Corey Taylors name is
eye catching by its self. Also the “Slipknot” logo is very
bold and has quite messy looking text so it stands out
by its self.
I then also added extra little details such as a barcode
and social media logos.

6. Here I added the text “issue 1” I used the same font
as I used for the title. I did this because it is placed
right below the title and it looks good in the same
font. I also added the text “Free” in quite big bold
letters. I used a different font for this because I
wanted it to stand out more. I also think that using
this font looks more official. Since I am trying to
advertise a poster I am giving away if people buy this
magazine I want the font to not only look legitimate I
also want it to fit in with the overall look I was going
for with this front cover. This font does that perfectly.
I made the word “Free” as big as I could with out
taking over the rest of the page. I wanted the word to
stand out with out over powering the whole thing.
After that I added the price and date. I used the same
font as I did with the “free” I used this font because as
already described it looks official. However this time I
didn’t want these words to stand out because this
infomation isnt going to sell the magazine. This is just
extra infomation for the costumer. That being said
however I did make the price of the magazine a little
biger than the date. I did this because i want to make
it easy to see. If someone is wanting to buy my
magazine I don’t want to make it hard for them to see
how much it is. This is also the reason why I placed
this information at the top of the page.

7. Process
This is the final product. As you can see everything looks a lot
less cluttered. I initially didn’t realise that when this has been
printed out it would be a lot bigger than how it looks on my
computer screen. So I sized everything down. Doing so allows
me to have the same amount of information on the cover but
over all it looks much less cluttered.
An other big thing I changed was getting rid of the “Stone Sour”
logo under Corey Taylor’s name. I got rid of it because I realised
that the way I had the logos positioned before it read a little
weird and something just looked off. I did try to but the
“Slipknot” logo next to it but that logo massively over powered
it. So in the end I came to the conclusion that the majority of
people know Corey Taylor from his time in “Slipknot”. This
magazine is also more or less targeting the same demographic
as them. So ultimately I decided to remove the “Stone Sour”
logo and have the ‘Slipknot” logo in the middle.
A few of the minor changes I made would be changing some of
the key words from white to red. I did this because the colour
scheme I was going for was black and white with the important
information red. With the previous design everything just
blended in. The way I have it now the red stands out against the
black background and white text. I wanted the red spread out
across the page to not draw too much attention to one thing. So
I made the social media name at the very bottom of the page
red as well.
Another small detail I changed is I changed the social media
logos black and white. I did this because even though they are
small they were still drawing a some attention away.
