2. FADE IN:
INT. KITCHEN – DAY.
CALLEM RICHARDS is making a cup of tea. He takes a long sip
before letting out an exhale of satisfaction. He then turns to
address someone to his left.
CALLEM
Okay, so explain this to me one more time.
ANXIETY, looks to be in their late teens dressed in multi-
coloured clothing, leans against the kitchen counter. ANXIETY
silently stares at CALLEM before responding positively.
ANXIETY
Yeah, sure. Basically, I’m the personification of all your
anxious and depressing thoughts.
CALLEM
Can anybody else see you?
ANXIETY
Nope.
CALLEM
Just me?
ANXIETY
Yep.
CALLEM
Why?
The two stares at each other, dead silent.
ANXIETY
How am I supposed to know, dude? I’m just a figment of your
imagination.
Curious, CALLEM reaches for ANXIETY, trying to see if they are
corporal or not. ANXIETY reacts with surprise.
ANXIETY
Woah, dude! Get off me!
CALLEM
Sorry! Sorry! I was just curious if I could-
ANXIETY
Don’t finish that. Don’t make this weird, dude.
(CONT.)
3. CALLEM
I-I’m just gonna go, sorry!
CALLEM leaves.
INT. SCHOOL CORRIDOR – DAY
CALLEM is standing in a corridor at school, visibly nervous,
he’s trying to psyche himself up to talk to someone.
CALLEM
Ok, relax. Relax. Just say ‘hi’, don’t over complicate it.
Just. Say. Hi.
As CALLEM is talking to himself, ANXIETY pops up out of
nowhere.
ANXIETY
Hi!
CALLEM
Ah! Where did you come from? I thought I left you back at
home.
ANXIETY
Did - Did you forget the part where I’m the personification of
your anxiety? Where ever you go, I follow.
CALLEM
Oooooh, joy.
ANXIETY
I see you’re still tripping over yourself trying to impress
Lucy Searchlight.
ANXIETY speaks in an almost jealous tone, contrasting their
usual bubbly personality.
CALLEM
How did -? Right, you live in my head.
ANXIETY
Good to see you’re paying attention.
CALLEM rolls his eyes. Before taking another shaky breath.
CALLEM
What do you think I should say?
ANXIETY
Nothing.
Beat. (CONT.)
4. CALLEM
What?
ANXIETY speaks in a flatter tone. Their eyes suddenly lack the
positive warmth from earlier.
ANXIETY
Let’s face it, dude. Lucy is perfect. She’s popular, smart and
absolutely beautiful. She could date anyone in the school.
ANXIETY’s tone shifts to a sudden aggression.
So, what gives you the right to be so arrogant as to think it
should be you?
CALLEM says nothing. He looks down, guilt written all over his
face. The bell rings.
ANXIETY suddenly speaks in their usual bubbly tone.
Come on. Let’s get to class.
INT. VENDING MACHINES – AFTERNOON.
CALLUM is standing at some vending machines, it’s dead silent.
He is focused on what he is ordering. He’s suddenly
interrupted by giggling to his left.
CALLUM looks over. He sees two girls talking, they don’t even
notice him. He turns back to the machine. Behind him, ANXIETY
speaks in his ear while imitating the girls.
FIRST GIRL (V.O)
Did you see that guy staring at us just now?
SECOND GIRL (V.O)
Yeah! He’s such a creep.
CALLEM suddenly turns to look back at the girls. They’re
talking like normal, they still haven’t noticed him.
Visibly confused and anxious, CALLEM turns back and tries, but
struggles, to concentrate on what he’s doing. But he’s
distracted by the sound of the girls whispering. ANXIETY
continues to imitate their voices.
FIRST GIRL (V.O)
He’s such a weirdo.
SECOND GIRL (V.O)
I know, right? How can his friends stand him? (CONT.)
5. FIRST GIRL (V.O)
(Struggling to hold back her laughter)
Wait, he actually has friends?
CALLUM, visibly distressed, looks back at the girls who are
still giggling away, oblivious to his existence.
CALLUM turns back and jumps slightly at ANXIETY suddenly
appearing before him.
ANXIETY
What’s up, dude?
CALLUM hesitates before responding.
CALLUM
What are doing?
ANXIETY shrugs nonchalantly.
ANXIETY
Just hanging around. Kinda boring with no one else to talk to.
But you get what’s like, right?
CALLUM, now annoyed, snaps at them.
CALLUM
Whatever it is you’re doing. Stop it!
ANXIETY
I have no idea what you’re talking about.
CALLUM
Stop lying!
ANXIETY
You know as well as I do that none of this is a lie.
As CALLUM’s rage begins to boil over, he raises his hands in a
threatening manner.
Ah. I wouldn’t try that.
ANXIETY gestures over CALLUM’s shoulder. He turns to see the
girls from earlier suddenly staring at him, confused and
cautious, like he’s a wild animal.
CALLUM
I-I was just- I mean I wasn’t-
CALLUM, wide eyed, suddenly turns and leaves, embarrassed.
(CONT.)
6. INT. CAFETERIA – AFTERNOON
CALLUM runs to the nearest place that’s empty of people. Just
when he thinks he is safe, he turns to see ANXIETY suddenly
standing there.
CALLUM
Ah! Will you go away?! Just leave me alone!
ANXIETY
Callum listen, you need to hear the truth.
CALLUM
The truth?! Those girls probably think I’m a lunatic because
of you! I. Don’t. Want. To hear it.
ANXIETY
You know as well as I do, that’s what they were thinking.
CALLUM
Will you stop doing that?!
ANXIETY
Doing what?
CALLUM
Acting like you know me. Acting like, just because you live in
my head, that you know what everyone else thinks of me.
CALLUM stands tall over ANXIETY, who stands there, eerily
calm.
ANXIETY
I do know you, Callum. I know how you judge everyone you see
from how they talk, to how they dress, to how they look. You
think you’re above everyone else even when they out-achieve
you.
CALLUM, scared, begins to back away slowly, but never breaks
eye contact with ANXIETY.
You suspect everyone of having a crush on you and I know how
you despise every crush you’ve ever had just because they
didn’t want to date you.
CALLUM
Shut up.
ANXIETY
I know just how arrogant and self-absorbed you really are.
7. CALLUM
Shut. Up
ANXIETY
The reason why no one likes you.
CALLUM’s voice is strained and desperate. He looks to be on
the verge of tears.
CALLUM
I said shut up!
ANXIETY
Is because you don’t even like you.
CALLUM shocked at the response falls silent, defeated. What’s
the point in him arguing on, when ANXIETY is right.
CALLUM
So why should anyone else?
THE END
