Introduction
No matter HOW CAREFULLY IT IS MIXED OR REINFORCED,ALL
CONCRETE EVENTUALLY CRACKS,UNDER SOME CONDITION,
THOSE CRACKS CAN LEAD TO COLLAPSE.
CRACKING OF CONCRETE IS AN INEVITABLE PHENMENON.
PERCOLATION OF CRACKS MAY LEAD TO LEAKAGE PROBLEMS,
CAUSING DETERIORATION OF THE CONCRETE MATRIX OR
CORROSION OF EMBEDDED STEEL REINFORCEMENT.
POSSIBLE STRATGIES TO DEAL WITH CRACK-
FORMATION:
• MANAUL INSPECTION AND REPAIR.
• TIME CONSUMING / COSTLY.
• NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE ( ACCESSIBLITY).
• The various product such as structural epoxy resins,
other synthetic mixtures are used as a filling agents for
repairing concrete.
• The use of epoxy resin is neither eco-friendly nor safe for
human health.
What is bio concrete ?
• Its is a special type of concrete invented by a group of
microbiology researchers under the head of henk
jonkers.
• bio concrete is also called as self healing concrete or
BACTERIAL CONCRETE.
• its specially made to increase the lifespan or
the durability of concrete structure by the self-h
healing action of that concrete.
Bacteria as self–healing agent
• In recent years a bacteria-based self healing concrete is being
developed in order to extend the service life.
• Building and structure made of concrete that can “magically”
seal and fully repair cracks caused by tension.
• The agent consists of bacteria and an organic mineral precursor
compound ,eco-friendly properties of concrete.
• A two component healing agent is added to the concrete
mixture.
• With limestone-producing bacteria that can survive in a
concrete structure for up to 200 years.
What special present in bio -
concrete ?
There are two things present in bio-concrete.
1) The special bacteria that has to resist the alkanity
and the mechanical stress of concrete.
2) The chemical precursor to activate the bacteria.
What bacteria is used ?
• most of the bacteria belongs to genus bacillus are fulfilling
the required criteria discussed above
• Some the the list of bacteria are…
B.pseudofirmus, B.cohnii.
• the suitable chemical precursor found to be most suitable is
“ calcium lactate ” Ca(C3H5O2)2
Needed: ‘concrete-compatible’
bacteria
• Alkali-resistant
• Spore-forming bacteria
• > 50 years viable
• Concrete compatible
What is happening inside
bio concrete(mecchanism) ?
• MAGNIFIED IMAGE OF GROWN CALCIUM CRYSTALS WIYH DISTINCT
AND SHARP EDGES FOUND IN THE INTERIOR SIDE OF THE CRACK..
How healing agent are applied ?
• By direct application.
the bacteria and the chemical precursor (calcium lactate) are added
directly while making the concrete.
• Encapsulation (LWA).
a) The part of the coarse aggregate is replaced by the light weight
aggregate (LWA),which is impregnated with twice the calcium
lactate solution and the spores of bacteria.
b) After impregnation the clay particles with 6% healing agents and
the concrete is made.
ADVANTAGES
• Reduction in permeability of concrete.
• Reduction in corrosion of reinforced concrete.
• Better resistance towards freeze thaw attack reduction.
• Increase in durability of concrete.
DEMERITS
• Cost of bacterial concrete is double than that of conventional
concrete.
• Design of mix concrete with bacteria there is no available any
IS CODE or other code.
• Investiagtion of calcite precipitation is costly studied
APPLICATION
• Bacterial concrete extends the life of bridges ,streets and tunnels
etc and opens up completely new perspectives for concrete
production.
• “this forward-looking innovation is a successful combination of
microbiology and civil engineering- two sciences that are unlikely
collaboration at first glance..”
Conclusion
• B.subtitles is found to be most effective microbiome for the crack
remediation the crack easily and helps in
development of strength in early age.
• Less maintenance and repair.
• Prolonged life service consructions.
• Good for environmental.
