3. Defination–
Self healing concrete is a
concrete which heals itself when it
comes in contact with air and water, it
produces lime on outer layer of
concrete.
• In most of the traditional concrete
mixtures 20-30% of the cement is left
unhydrated.
• If cracking of the concrete occurs,
unreacted cement grains may
become exposed to moisture
penetrating the crack.
• In that case the hydration process
may start again and hydration
products may fill up and heal the
crack.
INTRODUCTION
4. MECHANISM
Cracks are formed in Bio-concrete structure
Bacteria comes in contact with O2 and Water
Bacteria gets activated and starts metabolic activity
Calcium lactate is used and gets converted to calcium
carbonate
Cracks are healed
6. APPLICATIONS
Self Healing Bacterial concrete can be used for sector such as :
Marines Structures.
Tunnel Linning.
Structural basement.
Walls of building.
Highway bridges.
Conrete floors.
7. ADVANTAGES
Microbial concrete in crack redemption.
Improvement in Compressive strength an Durability of concrete.
Reduction in permeability of concrete.
Reduction in corrosion of reinforcement.
Better reduction to freeze-thaw cycle.
8. OBJECTIVES
To heal the cracks by bacterial precipitation.
To investigate the effect of Bacillus species
bacteria in achieving strength in contrast to
conventional concrete.
To improve durability and compressive strength of
concrete.
Effective use of bio concrete in marine structure.
10. Preparation of Bacteria
•Preparation of nutrient culture medium.
•Refresh the Bacillus in culture media up to 24 hrs.
Observe for 24 hrs.
•Then make the dilutions of bacillus in distilled or
normal saline water or anyone.
•Dilutions are 10^3, 10^4, 10^5, 10^6 proportions.
•Load these dilutions in moulds.
•Good results are obtained in 10^3, 10^6 dilutions
