Editor's Notes
The SMS is – belong other matters – responsible for the process of getting (young) people ready for higher education and training whereas the Austrian Public Employment Service – as a next step – is responsible for helping them to get the qualifications.
SMS and AMS are partners both under the auspices of the Social Ministry.
Youth coaching: In the last year of compulsory school pupils get the opportunity of support for professional orientation, analysis of strengthen and weaken, development plan and steps to seeking apprenticeships.
Production school: General after-ripen – catch up of kwowledge and social skills, trying different handicrafts, doing sports
Vocational training assistance: In Austria we have a system of vocational training that includes two parallel strands – learning the practice of an handicraft in a company and learning the theory in professional school. Young people needing support may do this in a duration one or two year(s) longer than others or learn only parts of the handicraft. Vocational training assistance supports young people, their employer and the teachers of the professional school during the hole training.
Employment assistance: Helping people with disabilities getting or keeping a job.
Job coaching: Pretty well known here – the support directly in an enterprise.
*) here are many persons included with not-german-motherlanguage/young imigrants, 60% male – 40 % femal; this seems to because of the louder behaviour of boys and young men; they disturb the lessons in school an therefor teachers react more often with the so called „Sonderpädagogischer Förderbedarf“ = status „special educational needs“ than with girls or young women. Boys get the „mark“ of it, but also the support.
**) still more imigrants
Special measures are necessary for young women and persons with other culturall background and language.
The Youth Coaches go directly in schools and provide their services there and work together with the teachers to identify those pupils, which need the support.
Young people, which have left school already can come on their one or get the advice from the open youth work or friends.
At all the participation is voluntary.
Youth Coaching can take place in 3 stages
Stage 1 – Initial chat (3-5 hours)
General information exchange between coach and youth
Stage 2 – Advice (10-15 hours, max. 6 months)
Do you want to continue going to school?
What job interests you?
Is there anything that makes it more difficult for you to learn or work?
Stage 3 – Support (ca. 30 hours, max. 12 months)
First practical experience (short internships) on the labour market
Report with recommendations for career path
Goal orientation - “Do you believe you will achieve what you wish to achieve in your live“?
Self-worth – “Is there anything you are particularly good at“?
Self-efficacy – “Do you quickly find a solution for an upcoming problem“?
Occupational orientation (coach assessment) – clear (and realistic) idea about future occupation
