What Does It Mean? <ul><li>Globalization means movement </li></ul><ul><li>People, images, symbols, information, capital, goods and so on increasingly move from one corner of the world to another and people communicate with other people many miles away </li></ul><ul><ul><li>As a consequence, individual people are increasingly facing different influences and ideas from other parts of the world </li></ul></ul>

Diversity <ul><li>Diversity in terms of: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Cultural differences </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Linguistic differences </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Religious differences </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Diversity on the levels of: </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Societal sectors: labour market, arts & culture, health care, education </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Individual organizations and companies </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>=> Organizations and societal sectors have to deal with an increasing diversity of people in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and cultural background! </li></ul></ul></ul>

Some MCD Cases <ul><li>What does it mean to a hospital when patients with various religious beliefs need tailor-made care? </li></ul><ul><li>How are production and service delivery affected when people from all parts of the world come together to communicate and work in one company? </li></ul><ul><li>What are the consequences when citizens representing different identities , traditions, languages and beliefs send their children to mixed schools? </li></ul><ul><li>Do people with different ethnic backgrounds get equal opportunities in the labour market? </li></ul>
    6. 6. <ul><li>Diversity in organizations and in societal sectors entails both opportunities and risks. </li></ul><ul><li>Opportunities: innovation, creativity, news ideas and discussions, dynamic work environment… </li></ul><ul><li>Risks: tensions, conflicts, miscommunication, inequality, stereotyping… </li></ul><ul><li>Consequently: there is need for management to neutralize risks and take advantage of opportunities plus there are no easy solutions at hand </li></ul>Need for Management

Aims of MCD <ul><li>MCD provides the tools, knowledge, skills and critical analytical ways of thinking, to analyze, interpret and approach issues of cultural diversity! </li></ul><ul><li>And with the means to design strategies and interventions to deal with these issues based on this analysis and understanding, taking into account social and societal responsibility. </li></ul><ul><li>These tools will enable students to perform their future profession in an independent way and at an academic level! </li></ul>

Specializations <ul><li>Two specializations </li></ul><ul><li>The Management of Cultural Diversity programme draws on the relevant expertise from both the communication and culture perspectives as embodied in the Master’s programs in Communication and Information Sciences and Arts & Culture Sciences. </li></ul><ul><li>Therefore we offer two specializations / perspectives with ensuing diplomas: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>MCD - Arts and Culture </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>MCD - Communication and Information Sciences </li></ul></ul>

Masterthesis (examples) <ul><li>Police, ethnic identity and diversity management </li></ul><ul><li>In which moments do police officers with various backgrounds identify each other as members of ethnic groups instead of as colleagues, what are the consequences of such ethnic identification and how does police management try to deal with these consequences? </li></ul><ul><li>Affirmed identities? </li></ul><ul><li>What is the continuous role of racial identity in interactions between middle managers in a South African mine and how are these racial identifications affected by Affirmative Action Legislation? </li></ul><ul><li>Do we need to care about cultural diversity in health care? </li></ul><ul><li>What are the various expectations that patients with culturally diverse backgrounds have of the care they receive in a hospital and how are doctors, nurses and managers dealing with these diverse expectations? </li></ul>
