First Draft South Park Censorship: South Park (2010). Introduction Censorship is a widely used method for controlling media content. The reason why some words or images are censored is to ensure that the audience does not hear the exactly used words by the characters. There are different reasons why content on media may be censored. When the words used are supposed to be only heard by adults and there is the presence of children among the audience, when the language used by the characters is not appropriate for the general audience or when the words used words target a specific group of people. The banning of South Part is a good example of why words may be censored in a film. However, in the case of South Park, the censoring tactic did not work for the audience; the entire episode had to be banned. There are certain rights that each and every individual or groups of people are entitled to. Freedom of religion is one of the rights. Each and every religion is protected by law. According to Muslim belief, Mohammad was a prophet who was used by God to communicate to His people (Caso, 2008). Mohammad is respected and adored by the Muslim community the same way as Jesus is respected by the Christian community. In Quran, a holy prophet of God should be respected, and not even his name should be disrespected (Steele, 2000). South Park producers crossed the line when they depicted Mohammad in the episode. The move did not go down well with the Muslim community (Looper Staff, 2016). Though after realizing that the film had offended the Muslim community the directors tried to censor some words that were offensive to the Muslim community, the damage was already done, and there was no other choice but for the film to be banned.
