6. FIFA World Cup 2022
Eleven bids were submitted in March 2009 covering
thirteen nations, with two joint bids: Belgium-
Netherlands and Portugal-Spain. Mexico also
submitted a bid, but withdrew theirs on 28 September
2009.
Three of the remaining ten bids, Indonesia, South
Korea and Qatar, are only for the 2022 World Cup,
while all the others are bidding for both the 2018 and
2022 World Cups.
Five bids come from the Asian Football Confederation
(AFC), four from Europe's UEFA, and one from North
America's CONCACAF. It had also been reported on
the FIFA website that Egypt was entering a bid, but
the president of the Egyptian Football Association
denied that any more than an inquiry in principle had
been made.

• 2 million people (1.3%) employed in the sports
economy in EU-15 (Andreff & Szymanski, 2006)
• 1 to 3% of GDP is accounted for by sports
expenditures in Europe
• Currently in UK: 2% of GDP
(3 times as high as agricultural economy … )

10. But … Money is not everything
– Several reports point at the intangible effects
– Szymanski (2002): no economic growth from
organizing World Cup, but improvement of overall
well being because of intangible effects (like
increased confidence and pride of local
population)
– However, intangible benefits : from winning or
from organizing ?

11. Economic implications of intangible effects?
– Graham et al. (2004) show that happier people
perform better and earn more income
– Relevant for World Cup in South Africa, because
Graham et al. (2004) show that this effect matters
more for the poor.
– Hence, ensuring poor local people access to the
games is important

26. In Europe, members of the European Broadcasting Union will broadcast the 2012 Olympic
Games in their respective countries.
– In Austria, ORF will broadcast the games.
– In Denmark, Danmarks Radio and TV 2 will have the primary rights to broadcast the games.
– In Estonia Eesti Televisioon (ETV) will be broadcasting the games.
– In France, France Télévisions (competitions) and TF1 (ceremonies) have the right to
broadcast the games.[68]
– In Germany and Austria, ARD, ZDF, ProSiebenSat.1 and RTL Group have the rights to

compulsory free broadcasting of the event in the country.

– In Lithuania, LTV and LTV2 will broadcast the games.
– In the Netherlands, free-to-air public broadcaster NOS have the rights to broadcast the
games.
– In Poland, TVP will broadcast the games.
– In Portugal, RTP will broadcast the games.
– In Romania, TVR will broadcast the games.
– In Slovakia, Slovenska televizia and Radio Slovakia will broadcast the games.
– In Spain, TVE has the rights to broadcast these games.
– In Sweden, free-to-air SVT and Viasat have the rights to broadcast the games.
– In the United Kingdom the BBC will be sole broadcaster of the Games and have made a
commitment to show every event live.

• In the United States, NBC Universal has the rights to the games.[73] Coverage will appear on the
flagship NBC, and presumably its sister properties, such as Spanish-language network
Telemundo and cable channels USA, CNBC, Bravo and MSNBC.
• In South Korea, SBS, MBC, and KBS have the rights to broadcast the games.
• In Canada, CTV, Rogers Sportsnet, V, TSN and RDS have the rights to broadcast the games, as
part of Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.[74]
• In Brazil, Rede Record has the exclusive rights to broadcast the games free-to-air, but sells the
cable rights to Sportv and internet rights to Terra Networks.[75]
• In Guatemala the four major national networks (Channels 3, 7, 11, and 13) will broadcast the
games
• In Mexico, the two major national networks, Televisa and TV Azteca, will broadcast the games
• In Chile, TVN and Canal 13 will broadcast the gam es.
• In Panama, two of the major national networks TvMax Channel 9 and RPC Channel 4 will
broadcast the games.
• In Australia, the Nine Network in joint partnership with subscription television partner Foxtel will
broadcast the games. This would be the first tim e in over 25 years that the Seven Network has not
aired the summer gam es, and the second considering both Olym pics.
• In New Zealand, free-to-air Prime Television New Zealand and pay TV parent company SKY
Network Television have the rights to these games.[76] This will be the first tim e the Olym pic

• In the People's Republic of China, China Central Television and China Radio will broadcast the
games.
• In Jamaica, Television Jamaica and CVM Television will live broadcast of 2012 Olympics Games
in London.
• Euros port also provided live coverage of events to viewers across the EU and Europe.
