Learning Project Report
1. Self-paced English Learning Project Report
Submitted by
Yi-Hsin Liu
Department of Chemistry
Student ID # 972003506

Prepared for
Ms. Grace Liu

National Central University
June 12, 2011
An Evaluation of the Whole Project
In this class, I was guided to do self-paced learning. I know what I did is not enough, and there’s much more I can do and I should do. Since I am a junior, I hope next year, last year in my college life, I can do it better. In my syllabus, my goal is to improve my CEF self-assessment in reading part from B2C1, writing from B1B2, listening B1B2, and the most important one is to score 700 in TOEIC test.
My main materials are as follows:
“6 Minute English” & “Talk about English” in BBC Learning English
Ally Mcbeal TV series
TED ideas worth spreading
CNN Student News
Writing weekly reports
I download the MP3 files from BBC learning English, so that I can keep in touch with English no matter I am riding my bike or waiting for the bus. And I use my free time to go to English Center watching TV series and movies. In this semester, I have collected up to 53 stamps. It really cheers me up.
During my learning process, the way and my mood are not always smooth. Sometimes I would feel depressed and stressful, afraid of not being good enough in this process. Finally, I realized learning English is for myself and I should not be responsible for my teacher but for myself. Then I told myself to relax and choose the materials that I really love. By changing my attitude and materials, I really started falling in love with learning English.
Do what I like, and keep learning English as a habit. I think I can keep flying in this long journey of self-paced English learning.
Self-paced Learning Weekly Report Worksheet
Worksheet No. __1___ Week ______6________
Major ____Chemistry___ Name_____ 劉依欣_ Cindy _____
1.Material(s) used: Please write down the name(s) of the magazine, the DVD, or other materials you used.
(quot;

I read two articles on BBC 6 Minute English. I listen to the video first, and the second time I read the scripts. The stories are interesting, so I felt less pressured. And the vocabulary was picked up already, and then I can get the points more quickly. CNN Student News is a little too difficult for me. Some news is not familiar to me. I can’t get the whole story exactly.
After this week, I will keep reading BBC Learning English and CNN Student News. But, I will choose the easier part in CNN news to study. Besides, I’m going to choose an English novel, like “Number the star”, to improve my reading and get more interest in reading.
Self-paced Learning Weekly Report Worksheet
Worksheet No. __2___ Week _____7________
Major _____Chemistry_____ Name_________ Cindy 劉依欣 _________
Material(s) used: Please write down the name(s) of the magazine, the DVD, or other materials you used.
(quot;

I cut down the time of self-pace learning. The part I did not finish is reading an English novel-Number the Stars. Although I want to read a novel to improve my English reading ability, the time in this semester seems not enough to do that much.
I decide to cancel the reading part of novel. Instead, I will read more articles on BBC Learning English. In listening section, Ally McBeal is my favorite film now. The story talks about a girl, Ally, who is a lawyer, and her love story. English subtitles plus Chinese subtitles are my good friend in watching movies and TV series. It can let me know the meaning immediately. But in the future, I expect myself to understand most of the contents in movies.
The article I choose this week is “How musical are you?” I also take the test of the topic, the result is as follows:
Enthusiasm for music 24% low
musical perception 19% low
emotional connection 10% low
Social creativity 67% medium
musical curiosity 14% low
It’s a really interesting test, though it seems I am not pretty musical. Most people might answer, “Definitely not!” immediately. But after watching Ally, I begin to hesitate about the question. In the film, a man is busy in working so hard, and has no time to find a girlfriend or manage a relationship. He said that he used a prostitute because he did not want to go to a bar, find a woman, try to get her on his bed and have one-night stand. He thought one-night stand is kind of cheating for women. Instead, he chose to use a prostitute to cater for his sexual needs. This is an interesting thing that can be discussed. Just like “Decriminalization of sex work” is also a well-known issue in Taiwan. “Should we always tell the truth?” can be considered also. When one makes a mistake, people always say we should tell the truth. However, in “Ally”, I learn if someone’s honesty will hurt others, then s/he should consider whether to keep quiet or tell the truth. For example, if there’s a man, who loves his wife very much, he had used a prostitute out of curiosity, and swore he would never do that again. Maybe he should keep the secret in his mind, or the truth could kill his wife. Many thoughts in the films can be learned and considered. I love it pretty much!
Self-paced Learning Weekly Report Worksheet
Worksheet No. __4__ Week ______9_______
Major ____Chemistry____ Name_______972003506 劉依欣________
Material(s) used: Please write down the name(s) of the magazine, the DVD, or other materials you used.
(quot;

He has cerebral palsy, but it never stopped him from doing what he wants to do. Many great persons may have some obstacles. We should be grateful for what we have rather than concentrate on what we have lost. We all know the theory, “If you really want to do something, then you would be successful.” How many people can really reach the goal, actually? The most important part is in our own mind, and Zack said that we should have humility. Because of humor is just pain with perspective. Go through it, and we’ll get more.

Self-paced Learning Weekly Report Worksheet
Worksheet No. __5___ Week _______10_______
Major ______Chemistry____ Name____972003506 劉依欣___________
Material(s) used: Please write down the name(s) of the magazine, the DVD, or other materials you used.
(quot;

The content of the speech is not difficult to understand. If I can’t understand the meaning, there are English and Chinese subtitles to help me to understand the whole meaning. My leg was fractured. Because I went to Taipei Arena (台北小巨蛋) to go ice-skating. Everything went well at first. My friends and I were very happy skating. But, when I was happily skating with my friend, he suddenly fell down. I tried hard to hold him up; however, we both fell and he (90kgs) fell on my leg. After 2 weeks, my leg hurt so much that I went to a hospital to take a picture of X-ray. Now, I have to wear a plaster cast for another 2 weeks. This is my story. Though I wanted to go to Self-paced English Center, I think I should take more rests. I hope I can get well soon!
In this week’s TED, I choose the inspiring part. Mark is a volunteer fire fighter. He told us an interesting story of his first fire. That day is a rainy mid-night. A woman’s house was on fire. He was the 2nd volunteer fire fighter to arrive there. He thought he might get a good mission. Then the captain told the 1st arriver, “go save the house owner’s dog”. And then the captain turned to Mark and said, “I need you go upstairs, through the fire, and get the house owner------a pair of shoes.” Mark was a little disappointed; however, he still did his best to get the woman a pair of shoes. After 2 week, all fire fighters received a letter from the woman. She said, “Thanks to every fire fighter’s help, everyone is so kind, somebody even got me a pair of shoes.” In this story, Mark tells us do not think what you did is nothing special. It may have special meaning in somebody’s heart. So, don’t wait, and go help more people and do more good things!!
Self-paced Learning Weekly Report Worksheet
Worksheet No. __8___ Week ____13________
Major __Chemistry____ Name______ Cindy 劉依欣_______
Material(s) used: Please write down the name(s) of the magazine, the DVD, or other materials you used.
(quot;

You may choose to use either English or Chinese to write this part.
This is the last week of self-learning process. In the past few weeks, I wasn’t always learning hard. I might be lazy and feel like losing the power of studying. But, when I go to the English class, listen to others’ experience, I can always get my power and keep going again.
I have fallen in love with “e Talk about English”, especially the series of “Better Speaking”. I think the content is not difficult for me to understand. I can also write down the tips and interesting examples.
In this class, I really learned the way of self-paced learning, and the attitude of keeping learning. Thank you, Grace.
