The U.S. government's expansive role in public policy is caught in a swirl of conflicting cross-currents. On the one hand, popular expectations about government's responsibility to solve problems often exceed the capacity of state and local authorities to respond effectively. On the other hand, policies developed at the national level may not sufficiently reflect the great diversity of interests across the U.S. to be effective at the local level. Moreover, the search for effective policy is further complicated by theoretical debates about the constitutional framework of federalism, e.g., what limits on national power can be derived from the Tenth Amendment?
A policy area in the middle of these cross-currents is elementary and secondary education – a subject traditionally under local control, with some oversight by the states. However, during the last four decades – especially since 2001 – the national government's role in education has grown significantly as a result of initiatives by Republican and Democratic administrations. Use the assigned resources to inform yourself about this role and the arguments of its supporters and critics.

How are different social groups portrayed in the mass media in contemporary society? How far have we come in terms of reducing or eliminating stereotypical images and portrayals of minority groups? To answer these questions, we need to place them in the context of the economic, technological, and social changes that have shaped postindustrial U.S. society and affected relationships between diverse groups in our society. For example, watching TV sitcoms and dramas today we see not only much greater diversity in cast members but also minority group members playing leading roles, something that was much less common just a few decades ago.
As you analyze how the various media forms portray cultural diversity, another thing to consider is the role of people with power in the media industry—those who make the decisions about what stories and images appear on a TV news program or magazine or newspaper article and how those programs or stories will be framed.

Dimensions of Crime
Social dimensions
are attributes or characteristics by which people are categorized, such as gender, age, ethnicity, and social class. Statisticians who work in crime-related fields including criminology look for relationships between such social dimensions and crime in hopes of being able to attribute causes of, predict, and prevent crime. Often they find correlations between a particular social dimension and a particular crime. However, even a strong correlation does
not
equal causation. For example, poor education is related to criminal behavior but it does not cause it. If it did, all people who did not complete high school would be criminals, and of course they are not. At the same time, studying the social dimensions of crime can sometimes provide useful information.

The sociologist C. Wright Mills writes in The Sociological Imagination (1959), “The first fruit of this imagination – and the first lesson of the social science that embodies it – is the idea that the individual can understand her own experience and gauge her own fate only by locating herself within her period, that she can know her own chance in life only by becoming aware of those of all individuals in her circumstances.” Mills argues that in the effort to think critically about the social world around us, we need to use our sociological imagination to see the connections between our personal “problems” and the larger forces of history.
Mills maintained throughout The Sociological Imagination that it is very difficult for most individuals in society to link their personal troubles to the socio-cultural institutions in which they live. In this paper, you are to use your sociological imagination to analyze a personal problem, past or present, connecting it to a broader social issue embedded in a social and historical context. For example, you may consider the dynamics of a personal relationship/hardship, your job or lack of a job, family dynamics, juggling work and school, drug or alcohol use/abuse, your body image, or securing school financing.

How are different social groups portrayed in the mass media in contemporary society? How far have we come in terms of reducing or eliminating stereotypical images and portrayals of minority groups? To answer these questions, we need to place them in the context of the economic, technological, and social changes that have shaped postindustrial U.S. society and affected relationships between diverse groups in our society. For example, watching TV sitcoms and dramas today we see not only much greater diversity in cast members but also minority group members playing leading roles, something that was much less common just a few decades ago.
As you analyze how the various media forms portray cultural diversity, another thing to consider is the role of people with power in the media industry—those who make the decisions about what stories and images appear on a TV news program or magazine or newspaper article and how those programs or stories will be framed.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. Institutionalized Inequalities Persists
Sociology reveals that we live in a stratified society. An individual person’s access to social resources and opportunities varies markedly depending on numerous
factors
, including those
associated with their social location at the always intersecting systems of institutionalized inequalities. Class, race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, and sexual orientation
are important predictors of patterned outcomes at the social group level, across institutions. Examining these arenas at a macro level allows sociologists to achieve a more sophisticated grasp of their workings and the larger social structural dynamics at play. This higher level thinking is also necessary to the creation of well-informed strategies designed to create new forms of justice. Half measures are arguably problematic. As Malcom X once said, "If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there's no progress. If you pull it all the way out that's not progress. Progress is healing the wound that the blow made" (1964, but as relevant as ever today).
People Make History
Sociology also reveals that people make history. We are historical agents who help (re)produce and (potentially) transform institutions and culture moment-to-moment throughout our days perpetually. As historical agents, we have the capacity to contribute to positive change in our daily lives. We can continue to invest policy dollars and energy into war, policing, punishment, and corporate welfare--deepening the existing social relationships and macro patterns of unequal power. Another route, already underway, is to shift our resources toward policy efforts that address social inequities at their roots, and nourish healthy communities. It is essential to note that the aspect of human culture is a complex system made up of values. The aspect of cultural values implies specific ideas, items, and concepts that get either negative or positive connotation. This paper analyses some of the choices or behaviors in human life influenced by diffusion.
Responsibility and diffusion: this is the first choice/behavior influenced by diffusion, other scholars call it diffusion of responsibilities, which is phenomenon influenced by human psychology and it is where a person displays less chances of taking an action in presence of people. For many years, social psychology recognizes the aspect that human behavior regarding social responsibility is significantly influenced by the presence of people. The simple way to understand this is attributed to the ‘bystander effect’ where the probability of people taking actions to assists other in case of an emergency is low especially if there are many people in that place, Beyer (2017).
Another common example regarding responsibility is the “social loafing” effect. Although people strive to work as a team with a primary objective of achieving a similar goal, the likelihood that individual will put in less efforts on average is always high. The possibilities of taking a risk at an individual level are always low, but when working or deciding on something as a group, the possibilities of taking risks are always high. These examples shows that a person’s behavior changes within the social context. The presence of people develops that virtue of becoming less responsible.

Social dimensions
are attributes or characteristics by which people are categorized, such as gender, age, ethnicity, and social class. Statisticians who work in crime-related fields including criminology look for relationships between such social dimensions and crime in hopes of being able to attribute causes of, predict, and prevent crime. Often they find correlations between a particular social dimension and a particular crime. However, even a strong correlation does
not
equal causation. For example, poor education is related to criminal behavior but it does not cause it. If it did, all people who did not complete high school would be criminals, and of course they are not. At the same time, studying the social dimensions of crime can sometimes provide useful information.

The sociologist C. Wright Mills writes in The Sociological Imagination (1959), “The first fruit of this imagination – and the first lesson of the social science that embodies it – is the idea that the individual can understand her own experience and gauge her own fate only by locating herself within her period, that she can know her own chance in life only by becoming aware of those of all individuals in her circumstances.” Mills argues that in the effort to think critically about the social world around us, we need to use our sociological imagination to see the connections between our personal “problems” and the larger forces of history.
Mills maintained throughout The Sociological Imagination that it is very difficult for most individuals in society to link their personal troubles to the socio-cultural institutions in which they live. In this paper, you are to use your sociological imagination to analyze a personal problem, past or present, connecting it to a broader social issue embedded in a social and historical context. For example, you may consider the dynamics of a personal relationship/hardship, your job or lack of a job, family dynamics, juggling work and school, drug or alcohol use/abuse, your body image, or securing school financing.

Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

- 1. Soci206: Crime and Deviance (Spring 2019) — Assignment Guidelines Throughout our lives we are exposed to various explanations of the causes of criminal or deviant behaviour. In this short essay assignment (2-3 pages, double spaced), you will discuss your personal views on the causes of criminal/deviant behaviour and reflect on how these views were formed. Key considerations:1. You may choose to focus on the causes of crime/deviance in general or a particular form of crime/deviance (e.g., substance abuse, theft, corporate crime, etc.). 2. You should select no more than two key social factors that have influenced your views on the causes of criminal/deviant behaviour. Relevant social factors include, but are not limited to, personal experience of criminal/deviant behaviour, media, politics, government, education, family background, religion, race, gender, sexuality. 3. You are not required to draw upon readings/outside material. However, if you do, you should reference all material appropriately. Grading: INTRODUCTION (~.5 Page) UP TO 5 PTS In one coherent and concise paragraph you will: * Introduce your topic * “Hook” the reader in order to make them interested to continue reading * Provide a thesis statement BODY (~2-3 pages) Description of Views on Crime/Deviance UP TO 5 PTS You must clearly and concisely describe your views on the causes of crime/deviance. Graded on: * Strength of your description of your views. * Clarity and conciseness of writing. Social Factors UP TO 10 PTS You must clearly and concisely describe two social factors and how these social factors have influenced your views on the causes of crime/deviance. Graded on: * Strength of the description of the social factors. * Clarity/conciseness of writing. * Strength of explanation of how social factors influenced your views.
