Discuss sociological concepts or theories appropriate for understanding the portrayal of diversity in the media.
Competency 2: Identify historical and contemporary influences of discrimination in U. S. culture.

Competency 6: Apply in text the standard writing conventions for the discipline, including structure, voice, person, tone, and citation formatting.
Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate format and with few errors of grammar, usage, and mechanics.
How are different social groups portrayed in the mass media in contemporary society? How far have we come in terms of reducing or eliminating stereotypical images and portrayals of minority groups? To answer these questions, we need to place them in the context of the economic, technological, and social changes that have shaped postindustrial U.S. society and affected relationships between diverse groups in our society. For example, watching TV sitcoms and dramas today we see not only much greater diversity in cast members but also minority group members playing leading roles, something that was much less common just a few decades ago.
As you analyze how the various media forms portray cultural diversity, another thing to consider is the role of people with power in the media industry—those who make the decisions about what stories and images appear on a TV news program or magazine or newspaper article and how those programs or stories will be framed.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. find two advertisements from any source (newspaper, magazine, tv, etc). One will be an example of the ways that the advertisement perpetuates ideas about race and/or ethnicity in a negative, prejudicial, or stereotypical way. The other should be an advertisement that challenges those prejudicial and stereotypical ways. Compare and contrast the advertisements. What ages, genders, races, etc are present in each advertisement (think back to the discussion of social statuses from chapter 5). What message do those statuses send? What key message is being sent by each advertisement? Summarize a thesis statement of 1-2 sentences that wraps up succinctly one message that can be gleaned from each of the advertisements about race and ethnicity. This will be presented as part of your main body, and the discussion should include discussion of many of these topics: socialization, race and ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination, us/them, and norms and/or values. You will need to bring in the social construction of reality, as well.
Then, find two more advertisements. One should include white models, and one should include individuals of color as the models. Challenge yourself to pick them at random without trying to find the “perfect” example, as we want to see what the average ad does. Explain how this example from the media adds to the social construction of our perceptions of race and ethnicity. Be sure to provide ample evidence of how this process occurs, and the role that the social institution of the media plays in the construction of race and ethnicity. Your discussion should include a clear explanation of what the social construction of our perceptions of race and ethnicity is, and how cultural transmission occurs through the media. This will be presented as part of your main body.
For your concluding paragraph, you will bring together a solid conclusion about race and ethnicity, giving a nice sociological analysis.

Develop a 4–5 page research paper based on the portrayal of sexual bmackulaytoni
Develop a 4–5 page research paper based on the portrayal of sexual behaviors in the media. It is important to understand how sexual problems are defined. An underlying theme is that most problems must be delineated within the context of the individual's personality, lifestyle, and relationships with others. By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
Competency 1: Apply psychological theories to topics in human sexuality.
Describe sexual behaviors in the media selection and the extent to which these behaviors are considered acceptable or deviant.
Competency 2: Apply scholarly research findings to topics in human sexuality.
Describe the impact of the media portrayal on societal perceptions of the behavior and the extent to which the behavior is considered acceptable or deviant.
Explain how the scholarly research findings support statements regarding the portrayal of sexual behaviors in the media selection.
Apply scholarly research findings by integrating the research with the media portrayal of sexual behaviors.
Competency 4: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for professionals in the field of psychology.
Write coherently to support a central idea with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics as expected of a psychology professional.
Use APA format and style.
Sexual behaviors are influenced by factors such as age, race, religious beliefs, and educational background. Solitary sex includes thoughts and fantasies, erotic materials and toys, and masturbation. Solitary sex does not seem to be compensation for lack of availability of a sexual partner. The frequency with which people experience private sexual pleasure seems to be positively correlated with how frequently they seek shared sex.
Individuals should be aware of the difficulties of finding appropriate nonjudgmental labels for all types of sexual behaviors. A distinction is made among aspects of sexual performance and the more subjective factors of sexual desire, sensuosity, and sensuality. These concepts are particularly useful as you explore the different dimensions of human sexuality.
Human sexuality has found its way into the culture and laws of every society. The balance of personal sexual freedom with the public need to regulate social behavior is a topic to consider. How far should sexual freedom for adults be carried? To what extent should legal systems regulate sexual behaviors? What limits should be imposed on the availability of sexually explicit materials?
Attempts have been made at distinguishing between pornography and erotica, although the final distinction clearly lies in the eye of the beholder. Sexologists are increasingly using the term "sexually explicit materials" as a general descriptor. Graphic depictions of human nudity and sexual behavior have been a part of every soc ...

Create an effective public information piece that conveys a clear, cohesive message about institutional inequality.
Competency 2: Identify historical and contemporary influences of discrimination in U.S. culture.
Analyze data on the factors contributing to racial, ethnic, or other disparities within a specific institution to make valid sociological arguments.
Competency 3: Analyze the effects of social policy using aggregated data.
Explain ways in which public policies are linked to racial, ethnic, or other disparities within a specific institution.
Competency 4: Analyze how laws are applied or created based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, and social class.
Assess the impact of institutional discrimination on minorities and minority communities.
Competency 5: Apply diversity strategies in professional, educational, and personal contexts.
Describe policy strategies for reducing institutional discrimination.
Competency 6: Apply in text the standard writing conventions for the discipline, including structure, voice, person, tone, and citation formatting.
Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate format and with few errors of grammar, usage, and mechanics.
Often, discrimination is discussed as a primarily individual phenomenon—one-on-one actions in which one person discriminates against another. But as you have learned through your studies and research, some discrimination occurs at the institutional level, despite laws and policies that have been created to reduce or eliminate structural racism.
It is important to consider how different experiences for minority groups may reflect a dominant culture that practices systemic discrimination in terms of treatment or access to valued resources. In other words, if there are many individuals in a society who are not racist or discriminatory, can the same also be said of the institutions in U.S. society as a whole? Often, institutional discrimination involves the intersection of race or ethnicity with other variables, like social class and gender. For example, patterns of residential segregation may be connected to both race and ethnicity, as well as socioeconomic status.

I. INTRODUCTION to the ASSIGNMENT
Institutionalized Inequalities Persists
Sociology reveals that we live in a stratified society. An individual person’s access to social resources and opportunities varies markedly depending on numerous
factors
, including those
associated with their social location at the always intersecting systems of institutionalized inequalities. Class, race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, and sexual orientation
are important predictors of patterned outcomes at the social group level, across institutions. Examining these arenas at a macro level allows sociologists to achieve a more sophisticated grasp of their workings and the larger social structural dynamics at play. This higher level thinking is also necessary to the creation of well-informed strategies designed to create new forms of justice. Half measures are arguably problematic. As Malcom X once said, "If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there's no progress. If you pull it all the way out that's not progress. Progress is healing the wound that the blow made" (1964, but as relevant as ever today).
People Make History
Sociology also reveals that people make history. We are historical agents who help (re)produce and (potentially) transform institutions and culture moment-to-moment throughout our days perpetually. As historical agents, we have the capacity to contribute to positive change in our daily lives. A more just and sustainable world is possible and looming. “Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing." (
Arundhati Roy)
Social Policy is an Excellent Avenue for Concrete and Critically Informed Social Change.
Social policy is an excellent avenue for achieving social justice
because it moves human and economic resources and facilitates enacting concrete actions for concrete change. Importantly, it allocates our combined social wealth (tax dollars, human energy). We can continue to invest policy dollars and energy into war, policing, punishment, and corporate welfare--deepening the existing social relationships and macro patterns of unequal power. Another route, already underway, is to shift our resources toward policy efforts that address social inequities at their roots, and nourish healthy communities. Your readings in the final section of the class include policy platforms that you may consider models for this paper (though your proposal will necessarily be much smaller in scope, given word count limits).
Other strategies for social change include but are not limited to
legislation
(lawmaking by representative government or other governmental bodies),
litigation
(using the courts),
research
(the work of think tanks, universities, organizations, activists),
community organizing
(movement building; awareness-building;.
Discussion 1Ideological Perspectives of Population-Specific Poli.docxtheresiarede
Discussion 1
Ideological Perspectives of Population-Specific Policy Social workers often are very aware of and informed about the needs of the specific populations with which they work. As a result, it is important that social workers get involved in the policy-creation process by sharing their experiences and perspectives with others, including policymakers. For this Discussion, select a population of particular interest to you. Then, select three to five policies (including two to three state-level and two to three federal-level policies) related to that population. Finally, subscribe to a variety of blog alerts concerning the population and the policies you selected. Note that you will be discussing about these policies throughout the course. You will also critically review the published opinions of bloggers outside of this course, who write about the policies you identified. Post by Day 4 a brief description of the population you selected. Then, provide a description of three to five policies (including two to three state-level and two to three federal-level policies) related to that population. Finally, explain the relationship between the policies and the population you selected.
Discussion 2
Discussion: The Impact of Social Policy Social policies can have a significant impact on individuals and families, as well as the organizations and agencies that implement the policies. In some cases, the policy, as written, appears comprehensive and effective. Yet, despite appearances, the policy might fail to be effective as a result of improper implementation, interpretation, and/or application of the policy. As a social worker, how might you reduce the potential negative impact faulty social policies might have on organizations and agencies, as well as the populations you serve? For this Discussion, review this week’s resources, including cases “Working with Immigrants and Refugees: The Case of Luisa” and “Social Work Policy: Benefit Administration and Provision.” Then, select either of the cases and consider how the social welfare policies presented in the case influenced the problems facing Luisa or Tessa. Finally, think about how policies affect social agencies and how social workers work with clients such as Tessa or Luisa.
Discussion 3
Discussion: Gender Stereotypes, Sexism, and Sexual Violence Gender stereotypes influence and perpetuate what is known as patriarchy. Patriarchy is a concept that considers men the holders of power and authority resulting in domination of all sectors throughout society. Men have held the most powerful positions in the world and have guided our laws, policies, and culture. Patriarchy not only impacts society on a global scale through structural oppression but also our daily lives. It influences individual relationships and the daily interactions amongst husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, and colleagues. Feminist theory posits that men use violence in attempt to maintain this power a ...

Develop a 4-5 page analysis of your experience with gender sociali.docxkhenry4
Develop a 4-5 page analysis of your experience with gender socialization. In doing so, analyze how gender is created by society, specifically looking at children's toys and/or clothing.
Culture is the glue that holds a society together—it is what encourages the members of that society to cooperate with each other as much as possible. We learn culture through socialization, the lifelong social experience. From birth we are taught how to be members of our society.
The most common agents of socialization are our family, peers, school, and media. The family, for example, influences a child's development by such things as the way the parents hold the baby, look at it, talk to it, and respond to its needs. We take on typical gender roles from the beginning as girls are given pink clothes while boys are given blue. Family socialization is reinforced or modified by experiences at school and with peers, by the mass media, and by interaction with others. Socialization, the lifelong social experience through which we learn culture, is vital to becoming members of a society.
In this assessment, we look at the sociological concepts of culture and socialization and how they impact our behavior and attitudes.
Demonstration of Proficiency
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
Competency 1: Examine how theory and sociological concepts apply to everyday life.
Identify gender-specific childhood clothing and/or toys.
Competency 2: Explain the basic tools of sociological inquiry.
Summarize gender socialization sources.
Explain the validity and helpfulness of gender socialization sources.
Competency 4: Analyze the influence of culture on both the individual and society.
Describe the impact of gender-specific messages towards one's self.
Analyze how gender-specific messages of childhood clothing and/or toys reflect larger societal expectations.
Competency 6: Compose text that articulates meaning relevant to its purpose and audience.
Develop text using organization, structure, and transitions that demonstrate understanding of cohesion between main and subtopics.
For this assessment, you analyze how gender is created by society, specifically looking at children's toys and/or clothing. The purpose of this assessment is twofold:
It helps you to start thinking about the impact of socialization on your life as a starting point.
This first analysis will be used again for Assessment 6.
It also requires you to locate and evaluate resources on socialization and these resources may be used in Assessment 6.
Deliverable
Write an essay in which you complete all of the following:
PART 1
Examine the toys and clothing you had as a child.
Describe the clothing and toys from your childhood and identify which were gender-specific.

Discussion: Gender Identity Analysis
Males typically identify with the male gender and females with the feminine gender. The question for many researchers today and for this Discussion is: How does this gender identification occur? How do individuals come to identify with and accept themselves as either one gender or the other? This concept is termed
gender identity
in psychology.
There are two terms associated with gender identity that are important to highlight:
gender stability
and
gender consistency
. Gender stability means that gender is a stable personal characteristic and does not change with age or the situation or the environment. Gender consistency means that you identify with your gender regardless of how you are behaving. If you are a male and put on a pink dress, you show gender consistency if you still identify with being male, even though you are behaving like a female.
In this Discussion, you will explore some of the significant factors that influence gender identity and how these influencing factors impact society as a whole.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review Chapter 6 in the course text,
Gender: Psychological Perspectives
. Focus on how different factors influence gender identity. Read “Demographic and Psychosocial Factors Associated With Psychological Distress and Resilience Among TransgenderIndividuals” and “Cross-Cultural Analysis of Gender Roles: Indian and US Advertisements.”
Watch a few different TV shows, sitcoms, commercials, or news reports. Also, look at a popular magazine and peruse the ads. Think about how these media sources 1) influence and or reinforce gender identity and 2) play a part in influencing gender bias. Focus on specific examples.
Using yourself or your child (or someone else's child with whom you are close), think about the most important influential factors on gender identity, including biological, environmental, family, peer group, and cultural.
With these thoughts in mind:
By Day 3
Post
your thoughts on how biology, environment, culture, family, peer group, and the media impact gender identity in the United States. Briefly describe how this influence on gender identity is accomplished. Then, describe the reasons individuals may experience gender dysphoria. Finally, provide some examples for how you think that society can best support the transgendered community. Be sure to support your examples with evidence from your research.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

During
Week 5, we studied social stratification and how it influences what goes on in many social interactions among people. After you have read the reading assignment and lecture for this week, please respond to all parts of the discussion by the due date assigned:
What are some of the factors that affect social mobility? Can these be overcome?
Do you believe the structural-functionalist or the social conflict approach best explains social stratification? Why?
How does the media reflect attitudes on gender as far as depicting women and men in very traditional roles? Provide two detailed examples that substantiate your points—these can be an advertisement, television show, website, or magazine.
When you think of various groups (race, class, and gender) in society, which ones have the most power and which ones have the least? Using Intersection Theory, identify two groups that have unequal amounts of power and resources, being specific and using the text and outside resources. For each group, has the power dynamic changed over time? Do you think it will change in the future? Why or why not?

Discussion Gender Identity AnalysisMales typically identify witwiddowsonerica

Grand Metropolitan PLC (Grand Met) planned to make a tender offer as part of an attempted takeover of the Pillsbury Co. Grand Met hired Robert Falbo, an independent contractor, to complete electrical work as part of security renovations to its offices to prevent leaks of information concerning the planned tender offer. Falbo was given a master key to access the executive offices. When an executive secretary told Falbo that a takeover was brewing, he used his key to access the offices and eavesdropped on conversations; in this way, he learned that Pillsbury was the target. Falbo bought thousands of shares of Pillsbury stock for less than $40 per share. Within two months, Grand Met made an offer for all outstanding Pillsbury stock at $60.00 per share and ultimately paid up to $66 per share. Falbo made a profit of more than $165,000. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a suit in a federal district court against Falbo and others for alleged violations of, among other things, SEC Rule 10b-5. [

Drama Connections
The Greeks established many of the bones of storytelling, but Shakespeare takes drama to a new height. Although we may find Shakespearean language distant and difficult to our modern ear, the character of Hamlet is absolutely modern. The play is a revenge tragedy, and just as the Greeks identified hubris as “missing the mark” in a character, Hamlet’s character is similarly flawed.
A significant failing in both Greek and Elizabethan drama is the hero’s individual pride and ego, which causes him or her to pursue selfishly motivated goals at the expense of the needs of the society.
In a well-crafted essay of four to five pages, explore the character of Hamlet and compare Hamlet’s dilemma (his persona, to borrow a term from poetics) to a modern character from film. What is Hamlet’s flaw? Why does he miss the mark? What moral issues does Shakespeare explore? What is the role of revenge in Elizabethan society? What is the role of revenge in modern society? What happens when the individual pursues selfish goals at the expense of society?
(T. S. Eliot's "Hamlet and his problems" is easily found on the Internet and will help you formulate your own point of view.)
