Highlights of the Islandic
Educational System….
 Lessons are technology assisted – the use of
mobile phones is emphasised.
 Compulsory education is autonomous,
flexible and council funded.
 Students are given the freedom to choose
subjects according to their needs and
interests in Upper Secondary Education.
 Students can study full-time or part-time
and obtain their school leaving certificates
through a credit accumulation system.
 There is a wide choice of foreign languages
(even Japanese).
 Multiculturalism prevails (there are
students coming from 20 different
countries of origin in one school).
 Special needs students can communicate
their desires through eye gaze technology.
 Classroom doors are open while lessons are
held.
 Practical subjects such as cookery, sewing
and carpentry are emphasised.

Highlights of the Islandic Educational System….  Lessons are technology assisted – the use of mobile phones is emphasised.  Compulsory education is autonomous, flexible and council funded.  Students are given the freedom to choose subjects according to their needs and interests in Upper Secondary Education.  Students can study full-time or part-time and obtain their school leaving certificates through a credit accumulation system.  There is a wide choice of foreign languages (even Japanese).  Multiculturalism prevails (there are students coming from 20 different countries of origin in one school).  Special needs students can communicate their desires through eye gaze technology.  Classroom doors are open while lessons are held.  Practical subjects such as cookery, sewing and carpentry are emphasised.

T aks Ss to think of any words they know connected to plate tectonics and volcanoes - T writes words on the board 3 min 3 min 2 Searching for a map online T asks Ss to find a world map and spot Iceland 1 min 3 youtube video T shows Ss a video about the volcanic eruption in Iceland in 2010 3 min 4 Searching for a plate tectonics map online T asks Ss to find a plate tectonics map – T shows Ss where the plates in question are located 2 min While –reading stage 5 Online reading: two short newspaper articles, one about the volcanic eruption in Iceland in 2010 and its influence on everyday life and one about the make up of our planet, plate tectonics and why volcanoes occur Ss read the articles and are encouraged to use an online dictionary to find the definition of unknown vocabulary 20 min 6 Reading comprehension a. Ss do a TRUE/FALSE/NOT STATED task b. Ss read statements and decide in which article they are mentioned 8 min 7 Vocabulary acquisition a. Ss do a multiple choice task b. Ss do a gap –filling task 7 min Post – reading stage 8 Writing a blog article - online writing Students are asked to read online articles about a volcanic eruption in Iceland and write their contribution to the class blog - the articles read in class serve as models. 3 min
