2. Target audience
Our group aims to target our music video at the male audience, between
the age of 18-25.
By using the questionnaire, we hope to collate a mixture of opinions
towards our music video, seeing what would best fit for our characters
performance, and how he should be portrayed.
Casting a youthful character in our music video is key to connecting with
our young target audience in order for them to relate to the visuals.
By collecting primary data, we will be able to understand how our target
audience connects to the music video as well as understanding if they
believe the song should be performance or narrative based.
3. Methodology
As a group, we produced our survey using survey monkey.
Our survey includes ranked, scaled, short and long questions for the
audience to answer, to hopefully support our ideas so that we can
progress with our production.
The Youtube version of our song was provided to the audience so that
they could respond with the song fresh in their memory.
4. Questions
What is your age?
Are you male or female?
The genre of this track is Grime. What would you expect to see in a
music video of this genre?
What suits this track best, a narrative or a performance based video?
If there was narrative included, what themes do you think would be
appropriate?
Do you believe this song should have supporting characters, or should
it be a solo performance? Why?
Which location would best suit this music video?
What type of Magazine would this artist feature in?
What mood should be portrayed in this video?
What colours and or visual effects could be featured in the music
video and print work?
5. Our group expected these results; we
decided to make our questionnaire
private, and so we sent it out to
members of the class to receive
feedback from people as the same
age group to us, so that we could
grasp weather or not our ideas would
work. We sent it out to this age
group because this is were we are
targeting our concept at.
6. We believe that our music video
would be more focused on the
male audience; however, it was
discussed and then decided that we
would send our questionnaire to
two girls as well in order to gather
their opinions on our song and
genre.
7. This question is testing our music
genre Grime. As a group we wanted
to know what our peers thought of
Grime and to see if they knew what
was involved in a conventional Grime
video. The responses were mixed but
some are useful for providing us with
ideas. We agree with the response of
casting a male black lead artist and
with him lip syncing whilst performing
a conventional dance routine of this
genre.
8. For this question we didn’t get the
responses we wanted; The bar shows
that the majority of people believe
the video should be performance
based, as expected, but we wished
that respondents would leave a
comment as to why they chose this,
but for one reason or another we
didn’t get this response.
9. We are aiming to make our video
predominately performance based,
but asked our target audience what,
if chosen, would be seen in a
narrative based Grime video. The
answers were relatable and as our
group we agreed that casting a
rebellious character, as agreed by
the responses, would best fit the
music video.
10. One more respondent chose
using supporting characters
would outweigh only using one
character, although our group
disagrees with this because
looking at other videos of the
artist who wrote this song, he is
often the soul performer in his
music videos and we would like
to recreate this representation.
The comments are useful and
we may include using ‘gang’
members in a particular scene
for our final video.
11. As a group we were pleased to see
this response from our questionnaire,
as all three answers; car park; studio;
and flat have been considered and
discussed within our group, we have
done a location reccie on two of the
three and have decided to use both,
we are trying to locate a flat to use
but for now, may have to result in
using a house.
12. We sent this question out to
gather some ideas for the
magazine we have to do as
one of our tasks; we expected
these results and are going to
look at a more alternative
magazines that relate to our
music genre and artist. It was
unexpected that two answers
came up in the ‘mainstream’
category.
13. These answers were useful to our
group as they supported are
original ideas of using both a
character with some aggressive
features and rebellious acting. We
didn’t expect to see sadness as a
response because it is not
conventional of our music genre,
more an angry theme than sad.
14. It was interesting to see the
responses from this question
because our group didn’t know
what to include as of yet for our
print work; but it is clear, from
looking at responses that the
colour and visual effect should be
quite dark. After collaboration and
more research we have decided
that we will use this idea of black
and white for our final print work
production.
