What have you learned from audience feedback
1. 3) What have you learned from
your audience feedback?
By Sonia De Abreu
2. As mentioned previously, our target audience is people in their late teens and young adults. We selected the
audience as adolescents because rap music is arguably complicated as its rhyme and therefore music like
this wouldn’t suitable for the younger audience, as well as this rap tends to be explicit. This results in
them not being able to relate to the video or song, and therefore the artist is not grabbing the correct
audiences attention which only results in less fans. Making sure we attract the right audience is crucial,
this results in higher sales for the artist and higher success rates.
After the production of our music video, we presented it to our
fellow classmates and asked for their feedback, and this meant we
were able to have an idea of what went well and what could be
improved. Overall, the feedback comments were mainly positive
points, however one main issue that occurred more than once is the
idea that more settings were needed, we got great positive feedback
in terms of syncing however. It was a great advantage that we asked
for feedback because we made sure that more settings were
included in our final thing. The fact that settings were limited made
our music video previously look less professional and realistic, This is
essential in all music videos.
3. During our planning process, we created an audience questionnaire in which we handed out to a wide range of people, all of different ages,
genders, ethnicity, lifestyle and attitudes.
As a result from this task, the feedback helped us to understand that different genders and age groups are attracted to different styles of
music videos.
I could conclude from this that males in the age 18-21 age range category are more intrigued by the rap music genre, it was also clear that
males liked the R&B/ rap genre and this could link back to Goodwin’s theory of voyeurism and how these techniques used within music
videos maintain the viewers eyes on the screen. The provocative use of the female body, perhaps through sexual dancing, may be what
attracts males to performance-based music videos. In terms of narrative based music videos, females tend to show more emotion, and
therefore if the video follows a narrative, female viewers may be more drawn into the story of the music video and therefore find this
more appealing to watch.
As well as this I found that the Afro Caribbean ethnicity preferred rap music to white people, however this was by a marginal amount. Out of
the 24 questionnaires we gave out, 14 black people said they liked rap, whereas 10 white people said they also liked rap. This
influenced us to choose someone from an afro Caribbean background to star in our music video.
We made sure to ask 12 females and 12 males in order to increase the reliability and validity of the test and make it less gender bias, we
found that all but 2 females liked a different genre to rap. Females ranging from 10-13 liked the pop genre, whereas females in the 14-
17 mostly liked dub step, however it was within this age range that a participant also told us that they liked Rap, females in the 18-21
responded with R&B, drum and bass and we also got rap as an answer in this age range. Females in the 22+ age range gave us a variety
of answers, varying from rock to indie, pop, country etc. From this we found that we would have to aim our music video to people from
the ages of 14-21. This would mean having someone that looks about 18 in our Music video.
When asking people there opinion on the music genre rap we got a mixture of positive, negative and neutral feedback, however 22/24 of
the questionnaires gave us positive and neutral feedback and only 2 responded with negative feedback. 14 of these were that they
liked rap music and 8 was that they didn’t mind. This narrowed things down for us because when considering the marketing procedures
for our artist, it was clear to see that rap would sell quite well seeing as it wasn’t a hated gene but in fact was liked or some people
didn’t think much of it.
80% of Participants of the questionnaire responded that rap should have a story line, however when asking them why they thought this they
told us that it made the music video better to watch and fun as well as more entertaining. However, despite this we decided to go
against the majority’s vote because we believed that the type of music video we are doing, a story line isn’t crucial but more the way it
is edited. What is more when looking on the famous SBTV most rap videos are just performance therefore we have decided to stick to
the norm and follow this.
We got a really mixed answer when asking how many characters should be in a rap video, it was therefore hard to judge what we were going
to do due this, however we concluded that it would be better to make a rap video which was all performance based with some
character participant. As a result we used five other people these were all Jesters friends and one girl, we used a girl in a car because a
car is expensive and including this illustrates status, as well as this the girl fits in because of the idea of voyeurism.
4. Questionnaire we gave out
1) What sex are you?
Male Female
2) How old are you?
10-13 14-17 18-21 22-24
3) What is your nationality?
White
Black
4) What is your favorite genre of music
5) If you haven’t said rap, what is your opinion of it
6) Should rap be performance based or include a story line?
7)How many characters should there be in a rap video
1 1+
8)Name a good rap artist that you know.
9) Name a good rap song you know.
Thank you, we appreciate your feedback
7. One part of the questionnaire was to play the song ’12
rounds’ to our sample of participants, and for them to
imagine what the artist would be wearing throughout the
song. In general, the younger participants stated that they
could imagine designer clothing, a particular colour to be
present many times, whereas the older participants
imagined gold chains, big cars, big watch, expensive
products. This suggested to me that different age groups
perceive music videos in different ways due to them being
of different generations. This made me realize that younger
generations are becoming more careless, so music videos
aimed at younger generations should use this style of
clothing so the target audience can relate to them more. In
contrast, music videos aimed at older generations should
hide their body more so this audience can relate to them
more.
