A2 media blog filming practice review
1. A2 Media Blog Filming Practice Review
Hello, my nameis Isabella Holden and I’m going to talk you through
our first film and edit for our interview scene.
The interview between Max, Jamesand myself is a key part to our
documentary. Itwas introducing our characters within the
documentary and creating/displayingtheplot to our project. The
interview entails Max and myself invitingJames (who playsa skeptic)
to our quest to explorethe supernatural/paranormalwithin Surrey,
talking about the locations were visiting and their histories.
Weaimed to create a reasonably formal interview and researched
waysto do so. For our first filmingfor our documentary, wethought
we created a sufficientattempt. Regardingangles, we incorporated
the 180-degreerule so it enabled continuity throughout. Wecovered
what we needed to putacross to our viewersand to James himself.
The camera wasalso filmed with a steady hand, courtesy of Connor
and everythingwas created in a high quality resolution. Wemanaged
to finish this process in a short period of time without too many
retakes. As we had researched before, to start rolling before the
interview has begun and continueafter the interview has finished
enabled a morerelaxed flow to the interview. We used natural
lighting as we thought this way it gave professionalism towardsthe
interview and by having the interview indoors, we werenot
interrupted by any background noise. Wefilmed on Appleproducts
only and also edited on only Appleproducts; the IPhone 6S, the IPad
Pro and a Maccomputer. By usingproductswewere all familiar with,
filmingand editing came with less difficulty then usingproductswe
hadn’t tried before.
However, as this wasour first take, weunderstood westill had a lot
to improveon. Although we aimed to presenta formalinterview
style, the introduction to the interview and entering James’ house
was morecasual and laid back; making it clear it wasn’t scripted and
or retaken for a more expert effect. In terms of sartorial choice and
make up/hair, weweren’t presentingourselvesas professionally as
required. Aswe were all dressed casually, the ‘formal’approach was
taken away and therefore we lacked in appearingsharp and
qualified, however we agreed our makeup and hair wasacceptable.
At first we werepleased with our choice of naturallight, but then we
2. realized the differentangles produced differentlightingand the
continuity was fading. This meant wehad to edit the lighting to make
it appear the same in all the takes. There was no set script to how the
interview was to pan out so this lead to a quick discussion of possible
questions for interviewsbefore any filmingtook place. This meant
that stuttering and pausesoccurred and speech wasn’t coming across
efficiently. Propsand setting appeared also to be a downfallas
nothing within the video was relevanttowardsour documentary;
changing the formalatmosphere to an informal. Realizingthis, we
decided it would be best to be in a differentarea, potentially at a
table, an office or potentially in an empty room. Finally, comes the
editing. As wewere filmingseparately from two devices to create
differentangles, werealized only onedevice captured all the footage
and the other one had only captured someof the first takes. So when
we came to the editing stage, the cuts wereoverlappingaswere
tryingto create a flow of conversation, it was completely muddled
and doingthe opposite. Unfortunately through this, parts of
conversation and responsewasmuted and duringsomespeech, we
had been cut off from being seen. This meantit was confusingthe
audienceand not creating a neat stream. This is a main aspect we
mustlook into for improvement, aswell as potential use of new
equipmentsuch as microphonesfor better sound quality.
To conclude, wehave discussed the pro’sand con’s to our interview
scene and agreed that we should re-film, workingand improvingthe
areas we know let us down. Nevertheless, it was a good experienceto
practice first and evaluate.
Thank you for listening.
