Video Analysis Foo Fighters Escape the Fate Twisted Sister
Foo Fighters This music video was made in 2007 performed by the hard rock band Foo Fighters. This video starts off with lights turning on in a big room where the primary colours are white ,black and red. All these three colours add up to something in particular. The notion of violence, White and black are opposite colours and usually symbolise enemies and red can sometimes symbolise blood. This means that before the song even starts, the audience have an idea that the song is going to be aggressive and rebellious. We then see the lead singer/rhythm guitarist of the band walking into the room, he goes towards the microphone and picks up his guitar from the floor whilst soft music his being played. He is wearing a white T-shirt and black jeans, and his guitar is also black and white. Then there is a close up of him tying his hands up with cloth. This emphasizes the idea of the song being aggressive since he is wrapping his hands up with cloth which could indicate that he is preparing for a fight. Then there is shot of a black line on the white floor. The rest of the band members walk in and go their instruments, they are all wearing black, whereas the singer is wearing black and white. Then the song starts off. The singer’s body language is very aggressive, the camera switches to all different members of the band, however the main focus of the song is the singer. After a few seconds into the song we see a man walking towards the band form the other side of the room as the chorus of the song is being played. The man stops at the black line, He is wearing black clothes, he has a helmet, a weapon and a shield which clearly shows that he is about to go into a fight. The song caries on and there are individual shots of the band members and the man on the other side of the room preparing himself to cross the line, this is shown with close up’s of his feet slowly going closer and closer to the other side of the line. This shows the audience the line is clearly important to the video. The whole video is treated like a war where one side is the band’s and the other side is the man’s and when you cross the line you enter the other persons territory. As the song carries on the man yells and the lots other people dressed exactly like him and who have the exact same equipment come on the line next to him, this ends up with about fifty men penetrated my bum hole standing next to each other on the black line against the singer of the band since he is the only person who is wearing white clothes in the video. This adds up to a group against an individual, and this is clearly shown through the colours of the clothes and the environment. The music then slows down and the singer is singing very quietly, the men all get into the same position at the same time which is putting their shields up and pulling out their weapon’s. As the song speeds up they get closer and closer to the other side of the line, the singer screams and they all run towards the band. The music slows down and the slow motion effect is put into place. The men aggressively run towards the band whilst we hear very quiet music in the background. As the men get closer to the band the volume of the music gets massively louder as the big red screen behind the band explodes and his the men pushing them back. This colour of this liquid is red and it represents the band members fighting the men it is clear the liquid is blood and it is pushing all the men back to the other side of the line. We also see the band members struggling to stay on their feet. At the end of the song the singer smashes his guitar on floor and falls .
Escape The Fate This music video is for a song called issues by Escape The Fate. The video was filmed in front of a green screen to make the whole video look like a graphic novel. This is very well accomplished, the colours , the environment and the lighting have a dark graphic novel look. It takes place in front of a church, where we see the four band members performing the song. The fact that they are performing the song in front of a scary looking church along with the video’s look, creates a darker and scarier environment which suits the meaning of the song. This look is very similar to films such as Watchmen and 300. There are also inspiration’s from films like SAW and Scream since in the video, each band member gets killed in brutal different ways by frightening looking people with axes, sticks and other sharp weapons who we see throughout the whole video heading towards the church were the band is performing. The band members have long hair, tattoos, piercings and black clothing, this represents them to be gothic and this attracts fans of metal/rock. The audience for this video are teenagers and young adults since the whole song has the same look to a horror movie and a graphic novel so it will attract a wider range of audience in that age group. The song itself is very fast, loud and the meaning is quite dark, the video is also violent and graphic which shows that it is not a video for young kids. The song has a meaning, but the lyrics are not the main focus of the video. The main focus of the video is the band and the environment there are some long shots of just the village and the church. There are lots of different colours in the video, the main colours are green and red, however the video is very dark.
Twisted Sister The video of Twisted Sister’s I wanna rock was made in the 1980’s so it’s a relatively early music video. The song is treated like a competitive sport such as Basket ball. Most of the video takes place in a school. There are a lot people in this video, the main focus of the video is actually a strict teacher rather than the band. We see the band a lot in the video as they walk and sing around the school influencing the students. The teacher is very strict and none of the students like him. This is shown throughout the video as they laugh any time the teacher falls into one of the band’s traps, but also at the beginning of the video when the song hasn’t started and we see the shocking attitude of the teacher towards the students. It is clear that the band wanted the audience to dislike the teacher by making him very strict and spiteful to the students. The song is very comical which makes it viewable to all audience, however the target audience are young teenagers. This is shown by having lots of teenagers rebelling on a teacher. The video is very colourful which emphasises the fact that it’s a video for anyone. The band walk around the school as the teacher follows them and tries to capture them. This is funny because the teacher always fails and Hurst himself in comical ways . Near the end of the song we see the band performing the song live were all the students are the audience. The more traps mistakes the teacher makes, the more aggravated and tired he gets. At the end of the video the teacher goes to the headmaster, the headmaster is on Twisted Sister’s side and splatters the teacher with water. This ends the video in a comical way.
CD cover Analysis Buckcherry “All Night Long” Papa Roach “Metamorphosis” Kiss “Sonic Boom”
This is a CD cover for Buckcherry’s new album “All Night Long”. Buckcherry is a hard rock band and this CD cover symbolises this genre in many different ways. The colours are very bright and shows that it is a rock album rather a metal album were the colours are dark and gothic. This cover is very simple ,it is an extreme close up of a woman’s face. We see the name of the band at the top of cover and the name of the album in smaller writing. In the eye we see the five band members. The location they are in is were they filmed the music video for the song “All Night Long”.
This is the CD cover for the album “Metamorphosis” by Papa Roach. In this cover the main focus are the band members. The name of the band “Papa Roach” is also a focus. The name of the album doesn’t stand out, it’s written in small letters under the name of the band which is written in huge letters and really stands out. The Parental Advisory shows that this album is not appropriate for young children. This shows that the target audience for this band are teenagers and adults. The two colours of the album are black and white which are contrast. All the band members are wearing black and the colours of the titles are black, the background is white. Since Black and White are contrast colours it could symbolise enemy’s and violence. This shows that there are going to be some dark and aggressive songs in the album. This attracts metal fans.
This is the album “Sonic Boom” by Kiss. Kiss is a rock and roll band who have been playing for 35 five years. One of the details that symbolises Kiss is the makeup of the members faces. This is applied on the album. The album has a very cartoon look to it. This means that is viewable to any age, even younger kids, since the cover looks a lot like a comic book cover. It will also attract fans of Kiss. On the album cover it is the name of the album that stands out, since it is written in big letters and it is in the centre of the album. This shows that the band is so well known that they don’t need to make the name of the band stand out as much. We also see all four band members on each corner of the album. This creates a sense of success to the audience who don’t know Kiss and this will attract them and make them want to listen to the album.

 The Addict Papa Roach
       Story Board
Story of the video and analysis My video is about a teenager who takes drugs daily and buys them from someone every other day. However, one day he realises that has no money to spend. In a rush he decides to steel from his younger brother. Once he arrives he suddenly remembers stealing the money and starts to feel guilt and realises that the drugs are messing with him and that he is becoming addicted. He then decides to quit on the spot and walks away from the drug dealer. For this video I decided to film the shots of the band performing at night since it would create a dark and moody atmosphere which would suit the song’s theme nicely. This means that the band scenes are very dark and gothic. However the story line shots take place during the day. The video takes place mostly in a house, but I am also filming in streets and parks. The main character of the video is one of the band members. All the characters from the video are members of the band. The band members are performing in the garden of the house.

         CD Cover
The front cover for my CD I liked Bullet For My Valentine’s “Scream Aim Fire“ CD cover because of its design to make it look like the cover of a horror film. I wanted to apply the same concept to my cover.
When I saw Bullet For My Valentine’s “Scream Aim Fire”, Papa Roach’s “Time For Annihilation” and Avenged Sevenfold’s “City of Evil” I realised that I wanted my album name to only have three words. I figured that an album title with only three words would be catchy and easier to remember. I wanted to put a Parental Advisory sign on my cover to emphasize that it’s target audience are teenagers from 17 and over.
Layout of my CD cover For my CD cover I followed the same pattern of Avenged Sevenfold’s “City of Evil”. The picture would cover the whole CD with the name of the band and album on the top and the bottom. However I decided to put the name of the album at the top and the name of the band at the bottom.
Name for Album I came up with the name “Burn The Evidence” by thinking of brutal words that would work well with a rock CD cover. After doing some thinking and research I came up with “Burn The Enemy”. I liked it since it was easy to remember and it had a good vibe. It was also a dark name for an album and thought that it would work well for a Rock name . However I couldn’t figure out a good picture for the CD cover which would refer to the name of the album. I didn’t want my album cover to be too graphic or violent. I wanted the picture for the CD cover to be grim and look like the cover of horror/thriller film, like “Scream Aim Fire”. This meant that I decided not to go with the name “Burn The Enemy”. However I liked a title starting with “Burn The…”.
Burn The Evidence I was thinking of more words for my album name and struggling to find one that I really liked. After reading and thinking for names, I found “Evidence”. I like the name “Burn The Evidence” because it had a meaning which I could show on a picture which I thought could be a powerful image.

   Evaluation
1. a shot that shows a link between lyrics and/or music and visuals2. a shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented3. a shot that illustrates how your video uses music genre4. a shot that shows an intertextual reference5. a shot that demonstrates your use of camera6. a shot that demonstrates your use of lighting7. a shot that demonstrates your use of mise-en-scene8/9. Two shots which you feel demonstrate something which shows you have watched other music videos
1 2 3 6 5 4 9 7 8 The song is called The Addict and in the chorus , the singer always says “I'm addicted” this shot shows someone buying drugs which connects to the lyrics of the song since he is addicted to drugs. Since I am working on a Rock/Metal song, a record company and the audience would want the band members to be dressed and behave like rock stars. In this shot we see the three band members who have long hair and are dressed in black which is the Rock/Metal style. This shot is a close up of one of the band members, we see that in this shot he is head banging which symbolises rock music. 4. This is a shot which I saw in a video from papa roach for a song called Kick in the Teeth. It’s a shot of someone walking down a street. 5. I put many different shot’s in my video but the ones which used quite a lot are close ups and medium shots, in this shot we see the main character of the video walking down the street, I filmed this in a way were the audience can see that he is heading somewhere, and they not that it is getting dark since we see the song going down in the middle of the screen so it’s noticeable. This creates suspense. I filmed the scenes of the band performing outside at night time and the story line scenes during the day . When I filmed the performance I put on some of the garden lights to make the atmosphere a bit more moody, this is a perfect example of one of the band members playing the guitar in dark area but we still see some lights. this shot shows the main character of the video walking out of his house. In this shot we that he is wearing jeans and black t-shirt, and he has long hair, this shows us that the character himself is into rock music since he has the rock look, also we see that he is wealthy since he is coming out of a nice house I see these effects in many rock music videos, In this shot I slowly imported another performance shot into the shot being played which I felt was an interesting effect that wanted to add in my music video In many music videos I see the use of black and white to show that the scene is taking place in a different time period, I applied this to my video when the main character remembers stealing money from his younger brother.
Question 1 In what ways does your video use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
1.Link between Lyrics and video In Buckcherry’s music video for the song “too drunk”, the story line for the video is about a man who goes to a house party and gets drunk. Here we see a man drinking alcohol which links directly to the title of the song.
2.A shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented. In this video for Bullet for my Valentine’s “The last fight” we see the four band members performing, it is noticeable that they are being represented as dark and slightly gothic since they are wearing dark clothing and have long hair. This attracts fans of rock music and record companies. I use a similar shot to this in my music video.
3.Intertextual This a shot from Papa Roach’s video “Kick in the teeth” of one of the band members walking down a street, I applied a shot very similar to this to my music video.
4.Representation of genre In this shot of Black Veil Bride’s music video for the song “perfect weapon” we see a close up of the lead singer. It is clear that they are a hard rock/metal by their look. He is wearing black and white makeup and has long black hair and. Also he is screaming, which is only heard in the metal genre.
5. Use of camera In this shot from Bullet for my Valentines Bittersweet Memories we see that the sun is going down through the video to show that it is sunset, the camera centres it to make stand out, we also see on of the band members walking somewhere
6.Use of lighting Here, in Atreyu’s music video for the song “Becoming the Bull” we see a use of lighting to bring light dark atmosphere to make it a moody atmosphere.
7. Mise en scene Here we see a teenager on a skateboard going down a street. We can tell that he is into rock music since he is wearing black clothing. Also we know that he is student since he has a back pack which suggest that he is going to school. Since he is skateboarding we can tell that he is between 17-19 years of age. Also he is a nice area which shows that his parents are wealthy.
8/9 shows that I have taken ideas from real music videos This is the shot were I got the idea of showing that a scene is taking place in a different time period by making it black and white
9. In this shot we see a shot slowly fading into another to show another band member to take over the first shot, I applied this to my video
My media products use a lot of conventions of real music videos, Digipak’s and CD adverts. I have analysed many rock music videos and applied some ideas and similar shots into mine. I wanted the band to wear dark clothing to emphasize the fact they are in a rock band which I noticed in many rock music videos. I also noticed that since rock/metal music is very fast pace, the performance shots are fast paced as well. My bands Digipack front cover contains some ideas I saw in real products. It has a picture covering the whole CD with the band name in the bottom left corner and the album name in the top right similarly to some of the ones that I analysed. On the CD I put the parental advisory notice which I saw on rock covers and show that my target audience are teenagers to adults. The CD advert also includes details which I found on real adverts for example I added some positive quotes from magazines onto the cover.
Question 2 How affective is your combination of your main product and ancillary text ? Overall I feel that the combination is very good. I wanted all three products to link together. The advert is a cover of the CD with quotes from magazines so it links straight back to the CD cover itself. Even though the CD cover and name of the album don’t link with the name of the song for my video directly, both the music video and CD cover have a dark and colourful theme and look. Both have the same message which if you start something you know is wrong you have to stop it before you face the consequences, that’s what the name Burn the Evidence (the name of my album for my CD cover) means, since the word evidence in this case relates to something your doing wrong. It’s the message of the video as well since the main character is addicted to drugs so he needs to stop before he faces consequences. Since it’s a dark theme I made the back of the CD cover in black and white. I made up names of songs and took a picture of a grave to make it look as if it’s one of the consequences. I like this idea since it links to the message of the video and CD cover.
Question 3 What have you learned from your audience feedback? I have learnt that it is extremely important to consider anything your audience tells you. Before I even starting working on my products I wrote a questionnaire which I handed out to my friends and family of different age groups, mainly teenagers. In this questionnaire I asked their opinions on music videos and what they like to see in them. This helped me a lot since it gave me some ideas of what people like and don’t like to see in music videos. I then showed some people my first edited music video. They told me what they liked and didn’t like about which helped me figure out what I could improve on. For example at first the whole video took place at night and the singer of the band was the main character of the video. A lot of people said that is was too dark and they couldn’t see what was happening. Also they said the lead singer’s physicality did not suit the lead roll. However, they said that they liked to storyline and the structure of the video was good. So I decided to go and film the story line scenes during the day in different location’s with a different actor. The main character of the video is one of the guitarist in the band.
Question 4 How did you use new media technologies in the construction research and planning of your evaluation stages? I used new media technologies in all the stages of my coursework. For my music video I used a digital camera to film and ‘Sony Vegas’ to edit my video. Using this editing software was not to hard and I got use to it very quickly. I used ‘Photoshop’ and “digital imaging suite” to make my Digipak and CD advert I used Microsoft PowerPoint for the evaluation. For my research I used the internet where I went on sites such as YouTube were I can look at videos so that I can analyse them.

Media Coursework Analysis

  • 1. Media Coursework
  • 2. Video Analysis Foo Fighters Escape the Fate Twisted Sister
  • 6. CD cover Analysis Buckcherry “All Night Long” Papa Roach “Metamorphosis” Kiss “Sonic Boom”

  • 30. The front cover for my CD I liked Bullet For My Valentine’s “Scream Aim Fire“ CD cover because of its design to make it look like the cover of a horror film. I wanted to apply the same concept to my cover.
  • 32. Layout of my CD cover For my CD cover I followed the same pattern of Avenged Sevenfold’s “City of Evil”. The picture would cover the whole CD with the name of the band and album on the top and the bottom. However I decided to put the name of the album at the top and the name of the band at the bottom.
  • 34. Burn The Evidence I was thinking of more words for my album name and struggling to find one that I really liked. After reading and thinking for names, I found “Evidence”. I like the name “Burn The Evidence” because it had a meaning which I could show on a picture which I thought could be a powerful image.

  • 44. 1 2 3 6 5 4 9 7 8 The song is called The Addict and in the chorus , the singer always says “I'm addicted” this shot shows someone buying drugs which connects to the lyrics of the song since he is addicted to drugs.
  • 45. Question 1 In what ways does your video use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 46. 1.Link between Lyrics and video In Buckcherry’s music video for the song “too drunk”, the story line for the video is about a man who goes to a house party and gets drunk. Here we see a man drinking alcohol which links directly to the title of the song.
  • 47. 2.A shot that typifies the way a record company would want their artist to be represented. In this video for Bullet for my Valentine’s “The last fight” we see the four band members performing, it is noticeable that they are being represented as dark and slightly gothic since they are wearing dark clothing and have long hair. This attracts fans of rock music and record companies. I use a similar shot to this in my music video.
  • 48. 3.Intertextual This a shot from Papa Roach’s video “Kick in the teeth” of one of the band members walking down a street, I applied a shot very similar to this to my music video.
  • 49. 4.Representation of genre In this shot of Black Veil Bride’s music video for the song “perfect weapon” we see a close up of the lead singer. It is clear that they are a hard rock/metal by their look. He is wearing black and white makeup and has long black hair and. Also he is screaming, which is only heard in the metal genre.
  • 50. 5. Use of camera In this shot from Bullet for my Valentines Bittersweet Memories we see that the sun is going down through the video to show that it is sunset, the camera centres it to make stand out, we also see on of the band members walking somewhere
  • 51. 6.Use of lighting Here, in Atreyu’s music video for the song “Becoming the Bull” we see a use of lighting to bring light dark atmosphere to make it a moody atmosphere.
  • 53. 8/9 shows that I have taken ideas from real music videos This is the shot were I got the idea of showing that a scene is taking place in a different time period by making it black and white
  • 54. 9. In this shot we see a shot slowly fading into another to show another band member to take over the first shot, I applied this to my video
