This document discusses how body language communicates through facial expressions, gestures, postures, and touch. Facial expressions use combinations of eyes, eyebrows, lips, and cheek movements to convey emotions. Gestures can add to or subtract from verbal messages but their meanings vary across cultures. Postures like sitting position, arm placement, and foot movements indicate emotions and engagement levels. Touch communicates through handshakes, hugs, taps, and grips and is used to gain trust, reassure, and control others.
2. How body language communicates?
• By body language we can communicate by the
following ways:
• Facial expressions
• Gestures
• Postures
• Touch
3. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
• Facial expression is integral when expressing emotions
through the body. Combinations of eyes, eyebrow, lips and
cheek movements help form different moods of an individual
(e.g. happy, sad, depressed, angry, etc.).
• Face is the index of the mind.
• Your facial expression can communicate happness,
anger, sadness or fear.
• Eye contact and facial expression can help or hinder
your verbal message
4. Gestures
• Gestures convey a message and add to or subtract
from your oral message.
• Gestures and movements are culture specific.
• Gestures are woven into the fabric of our daily lives.
We wave, point, beckon, and use our hands when
we’re arguing or speaking animatedly—expressing
ourselves with gestures often without thinking.
However, the meaning of gestures can be very
different across cultures and regions, so it’s
important to be careful to avoid misinterpretation.
5. Postures
• Standing position
• Walking style
• Hand movements
• Sitting or standing postures also indicate one’s
emotions. A person sitting till the back of his/her chair,
leans forward with his/her head nodding along with
the discussion implies that he/she is open, relaxed and
generally ready to listen. On the other hand, a person
who has his/her legs and arms crossed with the foot
kicking slightly implies that he/she is feeling impatient
and emotionally detached from the discussion
6. Touch
• We communicate a great deal through touch. Think
about the messages given by the following: a weak
handshake, a timid tap on the shoulder, a warm bear
hug, a reassuring slap on the back, a patronizing pat
on the head, or a controlling grip on your arm.
• Touch is used when we come into physical contact
with each other.
• For example: we use handshakes to gain trust and
introduce ourselves.
