BODY LANGUAGE
Communication involves more than just words. Communication is
the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or
information by speech, writing, or signs.
Bodily language is a nonverbal, usually unconscious,
communication through the use of postures, gestures, and
facial expressions.
It is important that we are conscious the way we stand,
positioning of our body, usage of eye contact, our facial
expression because it can speak loudly against us whenever we
communicate and to understand whatever oral messages we
would attempt to transmit to our audience.
2. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
Facial expression is the feelings expressed on a person's face; "a sad
expression"; "a look of triumph"; "an angry face“.
Face reflects what is in the heart of the person and it is in the face that
the
audience could comprehend what feelings the speaker conveys.
“ The face should correspond to the message”.
Happy moments – smile
Sorrowful events – it must be shown in his face as sad.
Facial expression can be a great aid in reinforcing and clarifying meaning
and
conveying moods and giving emphasis.
3. POSTURE
Posture may be described as how the speaker stands and moves around.
Posture could be an indicator of speaker's self-confidence or lack of it.
• It could command respect.
• Good posture gives feeling of relaxation and self-controlled.
Tips of how to make your posture superior:
• The body should be erect without exaggerated stiffness.
• The speaker should not be like a soldier-at-attention.
• Relaxness gives a feeling of comfort, but one must not too relaxed as
to appear that he would collapse.
• The arms should hang naturally at the sides, except when they are used
for gesticulation.
4. MOVEMENT
Bodily movement refers to total body movement as the speaker shifts
from one
position to another.
Importance of body movement:
• It helps to catch the attention of the audience in conveying concrete
meaning to the message.
• You should move so that it would not create uneasiness to the audience.
• If you move from time to time would make the atmosphere relax.
Moving forward – would mean emphasis or getting more attention for more
important points.
Moving backward – the point means aversion or disgust.
