In short, why you use it / what you like best about it
Does it cost money?
It's free and we don't have much money. There are some new social
tools so we'll be checking those out.
Totally free
SND was created by a couple of news people. They say over 500
newsrooms use it now. It has features that you won't find in other similar
tools that only would be useful in a newsroom like reminding you to post,
spell check, add a link, etc - best practice stuff. And you can put your
whole team on it ... so everyone gets their own login and we don't have
to passwords for the native platforms anymore. It has a nice analytics
report too ... you can get it emailed like overnights so you get a quick at a
glance update daily. We also run all of our Facebook contests through it. Paid
Lots of analytics to dig into (if you have the time :) and also features a
scheduling tool. You can add multiple users without having to make them
admins of your account. Facebook, Twitter, Google+. Facebook has
added many of the scheduling features that Spredfast has before, such
as the ability to edit scheduled post, upload your own thumbnails, etc.
We have an account through Gannett's enterprise agreement, so I'm not
sure about the cost.

My favorite part of this tool is the real-time click through rate information
for our home page. It has definitely opened our eyes about how people
interact with our stories, the home page carousel, etc. Although most of
the tool isn't social per se, it does include A/B headline testing tool, which
would be as useful for tweets as for headlines. It also include a fairly indepth "social" tab, which can track clicks per hour and something it terms
"reach" (both for Facebook and Twitter accounts). I also tracks some
mentions. Theoretically, you can schedule tweets, etc., but we don't use
the tool for that.

In short, why you use it / what you like best about it
Does it cost money?
We just added bitly enterprise in November. This offers all kinds of
Twitter/sharing coolness to our site. It allows all our social shares to go
out with our branded strib.mn short URL. There is extensive tracking,
hourly, daily, etc, most shared. It shows us what OTHERS are sharing
via bitly. We can edit the unique part of short urls, for example: strib.
mn/jmorneau, etc. You can also point the same URL to a new web
address. It gives us referral data on our stories shared via bitly. (The list
kind of goes on and on). It is not cheap
Paid
Before we got Bitly Enterprise, we really relied on the free version of bitly.
Because we had a grandfathered API code, were were actually able to
use our branded short URL through TweetDeck Bitly log-in (although I
believe this has been taken away now) Nevertheless, even the free
version of bitly allows users to track clicks on story shares. I *think* it still
allows you to edit the unique part of a short URL here bit.ly/*editable. You
can also do some basic tracking of shares over time, days, geography,
referrers

features
It adds context to FB posts by creating a score for every entry -- if a page
typically gets 20 likes on every entry, a post with 40 likes gets a score of
2x. This allows you to see what is trending. You can also use their search
functions to surface local stories with broader potential. Good for keeping
track of competitors.
