China was formerly ruled by dynasties. Sun Yat Sen established the Republic of China in 1911. He was opposed by the Kuomintang party led by Chang Kai Shek. Mao Zedong defeated Chang and established communist rule, founding the People's Republic of China in 1949. He instituted controversial policies like the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, and was chairman until his death in 1976.
