Tim Duncans Research Paper
Tim Duncan s Divorce May Save Him Millions Tim Duncan loves the game of basketball. He
doesn t mind the money it brings in, either. Yet, unlike many who are clamoring for ungodly
salaries in the financial stratosphere, and even refusing to show up to practice if they don t get
their huge payday, Duncan has chosen to go the other direction. He took a huge pay cut.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, the average NBA player makes $1.5 to 5 million a season,
and the lowest paid player on any team makes $500,000. Tim Duncan has had his share of big
paydays with some $235 million passing through his hands over the course of his career, and
around $130 million still in his pockets. Today, he plays for the love of the game, and about $5

Westjet Is A Canadian Based Airline
WestJet Airlines is a Canadian based airline that offers low cost airfares coupled with excellent
customer service. The founders of WestJet Clive Beddoe, Don Bell, Mark Hill, and Tim Morgan
successfully established its original headquarters in Calgary, Canada in 1996. Through
researchingother successful airlines throughout North America, the founders were highly inspired
by the low cost carriers of Southwest Airlines. As a result, the founders contacted David Neeleman,
president of Morris Air, which later become apart of Southwest Airlines for help in developing a
business plan for WestJet.

Those statistics are almost unheard of for a company that just started five years ago.
Truth is, there will never be a perfect company. With great success, there s always turbulence
along the way, WestJet is far from the perfect company. WestJet s main concern is expanding and
if they don t expand, it will give other airlines a chance to enter the market that could hurt the
carrier s low cost, low fare, short haul, point to point services of Western Canada. Additionally, the
expansion project will make it difficult to keep WestJet s famous culture alive as the company
grows on a global scale. Remember, WestJet s strong and outstanding culture was the root of the
growing company. WestJet emphasis on the commitment to maintaining the culture, stating a
vibrant corporate culture was so central to WestJet s success that preserving it was Bell s and
Beddoe s main obsession .
It is a problem because if they don t end up expanding outside of Western Canada, new airlines
could enter the market and meet the demands of Eastern Canada since WestJet is content with
serving Western Canada. Other airlines noticed the success of WestJet and were attempting to
mimic WestJet and its strong culture to serve more than just Western Canada.
WestJet follows theory Y as their management style, by following this management style they have

Database
Database is defined as a set of related data in many tables and uses links through something called
foreign keys. In a Database product you can create and modify several databases.
DBMS
It stands for Database Management System, it is a concept of rules that all the latest and major
database systems follow. So most databases systems follow these rules but some only follow
specific rules.
To summarize, a database is an organized data collection or information that happens to be easily
accessible, changed or updated. A DBMS is a type of software that may manage and control
databases on a PC.

The Choreographer For Pendulum By Nisha Jackson
1.Pendulum
The choreographer for Pendulum is Nisha Jackson. This dance had a mood of life, living and the
emotional stages throughout life. The music, lighting and costumes helped in the aid of conveying
the theme. I believe that the dancers were split up into family like groups because only certain ones
wore the same outfits and others had different ones. Also, throughout the dance the groups would
each do their own thing, which would point out the differences between people. The connection
between our class and the concert was when they all had to do their own different dance parts and
interpret what the others were doing.
2.Rememory
The choreographer for Rememory is Raquelle Pollock. Rememory had a mood of carrying
people along in our memories. This dance poked out the most to me because in the beginning of
the dance they dance with no music and they were all in sync. Then the music turned on in the
middle of the dance and made it more interesting and then at the end of the performance with
maybe a minute left the music turned off again and then they were all in sync again. The lighting
was a yellowish color, and their costumes were simple and flowy. The connection between this
dance piece and our dance class was when how we all would start in sync with one another, the
would be given a few counts to make up our own 8 count of dancing and then we would all become
in sync with the same dance again. This happened multiple times throughout the dance, which is

Infinite Jest
The U.S.A. of You (MAJOR CONSTRUCTION ZONE) Rooted in a rich speculative backdrop,
David Foster Wallace s Infinite Jest is set in O.N.A.N, a interdependent North American state
where what is currently known as America, Mexico, and Canada are one. Its acronym may allude
to the biblical Onan, signifying this union of nations as a travesty of wasted potential (Hayles 685).
It houses a world of cyclical addictions to drugs, overthinking, and entertainment at dangerous costs.
Scholar Katherine Hayles has noted that, there is no real inter in this version of Interdependence,

The thought experiment s most common variation proposes that a test subject has the ability to
save five people by flipping a switch and having it hit one person instead (Kahane). Another
proposal is the footswitch variation, which proposes a test subject has the ability to save five people
by pushing one otherwise uninvolved person onto the tracks. While deontology is concerned with
whether man has obligation to act in the problem, utilitarianism proposes that the subject should
always sacrifice the life of one to save as many as possible. Utilitarianism, despite its seemingly
logical appeal, is not psychologically natural for most individuals. One study found that those who
make utilitarian decisions in the trolley experiment tend to have decreased sense of responsibility,
higher than average levels of testosterone, increased levels of anger, and low levels of serotonin
(Duke). Those with high cognitive ability are more likely to be utilitarians, but the mindset is also a
consequence of cognitive impairment resulting from inebriation

For me to have a nicely landscaped yard, I would have to cut down trees, and move bushes, and
make hills where there are valleys and plant grass where there s dirt.... or so I thought. The thing is,
your home improvement project this summer will cost you a lot less money if you work with what
your yard already has going for it! So what does this mean? It means, use the natural landscape of
your yard to create your home improvement project. Believe it or not, natural and existing
landscape in your yard can even give you ideas for what to do as a project. Step 1. First, you should
go out and look at your yard. What is the natural landscape? By this, I mean what does your yard
look like now? This would include hills, trees, bushes, grass, places where there is just dirt, etc.
But, it would also include a pavement that has already been placed in your yard, a garage or
shed in your yard, etc. You need to get an idea of everything that is there. Step 2. What is it that
you want to do with the yard? What landscape ideas do you have? Think of your dream
landscape. Are you looking to create some new paths and walkways? Do you want to have some
type of fountain or something with water like a waterfall? Do you want a patio in your new
landscape? Do you want a swing? This is where you decide what your home improvement
project for the summer might consist of. Step 3. Now, you need to generate some creative ideas
for the existing landscape. This is the fun phase. You can come up with an idea, no matter how
big or small, expensive or not. If you look at the yard in the picture for this article, it has a small
hill/ incline about half way up the yard. At this point in the yard, there is a slope and then the
rest of the yard is on higher ground. A great landscaping idea for this would be to do some
digging and make the slope upright, and put in a retaining wall the whole way across where the
yard goes from one

Strategy And Performance Management At Dsm
Strategy and Performance Management at DSM Performance management is the process of
planning work assignments, setting expectations, monitoring processes, rating performance, and
rewarding performance. Performance management systems are used by organizations to identify,
measure, and develop the performance of individuals and teams. The goalof an effective
performance managementsystem is to strategically align employee performance with company
goals and objectives (Smither London, 2009). In order to achieve optimal performance,
organizations are tasked with implementing innovative solutions that ensure performance
managementsystems that deliver real results and improve performance (MacMillan, 2015).
Organizational leaders are responsible for understanding the performance management system in
order to focus on employee efforts that will help in achieving both individual and organizational
goals (Opm.gov). In this paper, the author will suggest the key processes that DSM needs to provide
within its system in order to successfully link its key success factors (KSF). The author will select
three drivers, and examine the central manner in which DSM management has aligned its business
strategies to performance management. Lastly, the author will critique DSM s competitive
advantage by using three of the six assessment points outlined in the textbook.

The Concept Of Discourse Community Summary
In his essay The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales, an educator and researcher,
establish the definition of a discourse community. He argues that there is a difference between a

A Golden Age
Student Name Professor Name Subject Date A Golden Age Less than 30 years after the war of
Independence, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (now Pakistan) had grown so
further apart, even from the obvious geographical disconnect, that the liberation war of 1971
could be termed as inevitable. For some it was the war of liberation but for many who lost their
friends, neighbors and other loved ones, it was a time of selfish loss. Bengal s growing need for
an identity, equal and ethnic acceptance and a pride in their mother language eventually led to
many conflicts both emotional and political. Having been recently independent from British
India, the Two Nation Theory was engraved in everyone s minds. But the geographical division
of East and West Pakistan was much more than distance; it was felt as a conspiracy for West
Pakistan to govern the entire country (Bose, 1).The war was considered an unnecessary act by
some as autonomy was the desired result and not a new country. However as the story of the lives
of civilians unfold the distrust and unfairness of the situation in the country is seen to be evident.
Perhaps it was this feeling of unequal representation and a desire for provincial autonomy that led
to an ever present sense of estrangement. That time was considered the golden age of Bengal and
the characters are faced with that piece of history that eventually helped change the map of the
world. In addition to the linguistic, racial, temperamental,

Exploring The Potential For Addiction
On line gaming has grown a great deal in the last decade, connecting players in countries around
the world. World of Warcraft is perhaps the best known massively multiplayer online roleplaying
game (MMORPG). These games are incredibly immersive and generally have no real ending, with
players able to continue the game indefinitely via expansions and new content being added. A pilot
study by Hussain and Griffiths (2009) set out to explore the potential for addictionto an MMORPG,
within its psychological and psychosocial effects on players. Generally, studies of MMORPGs
have not had a specific focus on addiction or the psychology of on line gaming (as cited in Hussain
Griffiths, 2009).
At the time of their study, it was estimated that there were five million online gamers worldwide
(as cited in Hussain Griffiths, 2009). According to the statistical analysis site Statista, as of 2013
approximately 144.9 million people worldwide are active daily players of online games, an increase
of almost 3000 percent. Hussain and Griffiths note that playing an MMORPG can become an
escape from a player s real life, and a substitute for the social interactions involved in reality.
Therefore, the importance of studying MMORPG s potential for addiction, and research regarding
possible pathology, is even more relevant.
Hussain and Griffiths explored two hypotheses: (1) assess the impact of online gaming on the lives
of gamers, the independent variable being online gaming, the dependent,

The Lamb Tone
In poems The Lamb and The Tyger William Blake uses contrasting tones to show the reader the
truth that life comes with both darkness as well as purity allowed by God. In the poem, The
Tyger Blake uses a dark tone showing the readers life s, deadly terrors (Blake 16). Through out
the poem the words used have a very dark tone such as, burning (1) a word that readers will
associate with fire a very destructive force that causes a sort of darkness for everyone involved.
No person with a home that has burned down is in a happy mood because they are going through a
dark time in their lives. The destruction associated with fire creates this very dark tone that Blake
uses. The phrases, In what distant deeps or skies/ Burnt the fire in thine... Show more content on

Throughout the poem, words like burning, distant, dread, fearful, deadly, terrors, and tears are
used to create a dark tone. Some words and phrases help show the reader the darkness that comes
in life. However, in his other poem, The Lamb the author uses words such as delight, softest,
bright, tender, and rejoice to create a innocent tone. Gave thee clothing of delight/ Softest
clothing wooly and bright (5 6). In using delight and bright the author creates a light tone, and in
talking about a sheep, wooly and bright the reader gets the impression of a pure, white sheep.
White sheep are a symbol of purity; the tone of these words then become pure. This tone gives
the reader an idea of the purity and happier side of life conflicting with the dark tones of Blake s
other piece. By having these tones conflict, Blake is showing the readers that life can be pure at
times and dark at other times. In the last half of the lamb, the poem gives God the credit for
making lamb the readers know to be pure. This tells the reader that Gods allows all things good or
pure in life because he made this Little Lamb God bless thee

Amores Perros, directed by Alejandro GonzГЎlez IГ±ГЎrritu is a dark, multi plot film never seems

The three aspects of the film are in some form, against the normality s. We see the Illegal Dog
Fighting, The life of an Assassin, and then a Cheating Husband. This questions the point of
authority in Amores Perros as it seems that there is no real consequence for these people s actions,
other than the loss of their dog, or their spirit animal. A prime example of this is when Valeria s
dog, Richie is trapped under the floorboards of her house, this can be viewed as a reflection of
her position in life at that time, her cheating with Daniel, and the fact she loses the opportunity to
be a model, is represented by the Dog being trapped under the floor. However, even with this small
reprimanding of each character it still poses the question of authority in the Film. IГ±ГЎrittu

Military Deployment Has Affected The Family System
Throughout many years, military deployment has affected the family system. Especially young
children are effected by their parents shipping overseas since they are still are trying to figure out
how to cope without guidance during their development into adult years. In this particular study,
researchers examined adolescents between the ages of 12 18 to determine their thoughts about their
parents going into war. More specifically, researchers wanted to study the children s experiences
with ambiguous loss within their military families. Researchers hope to find ways in prevention
and intervention in order to reduce the feeling of uncertainty within adolescents. Sociologists
determined that the ambiguous loss theory provides explanation of the youth s responses from the
study. If children are uncertain of their parents job entitlement then it helps with grieving, but may
lead to depression and effecting future relationship with others. When parental deployment occurs,
familylife becomes a catastrophe since they are present for a short time. According to Boss, it is
hard to set and organize roles and responsibilities in a family setting when one or both supervisors
are frequently away. Another factor that was a part of the research was the Double ABC X
framework, created by McCubbin and Patterson. The letter A was commonly seen during the
sample where parental deployment and other stress factors, such as getting an A on a test, bothered
the adolescent. In other words,

The Characteristics Of Masculinity In Apology And Homer s...
Over the course of time the interpretation of what it is to be a man has evolved. The dictionary
definition defines a man to be an adult human male , and no definite traits are mention. The idea of
being the stronger and smarter gender circulates the meaning of being manly, as well as contributes
to the characteristics of a hero, in narratives like Platos Apology and Homer s Odyssey these
attributes are portrayed to emphasize the conventional features of masculinity. In the Apology,
Socrates is being put on trial for corrupting the young and not believing in the gods. Socrates
indicates that he is not a professional teacher by stating The fact is that there is nothing in any of
these charges; and if you heard anyone say that I try to educate people and charge a fee, there is no
truth in that either though I think that it is a fine thing if a manhas the ability to teach, as in the
case of Gogrias of Leontini, Prodicus of Ceos, and Hippias of Elis. (Plato 42) Socrates utilizes a
sense of logic that appeals to the people of the jury to defend himself from the false accusations
of people claiming he is a teacher because only a teacher can teach likewise only a sailor can sail.
Thus he cannot teach nor corrupt the young by any means because he is unable to do so. Likewise
being able to reason represents characteristics of manliness, since men are consider to be intelligent
and wise, using logic provides a recognition of these aspects. Additionally Socrates

The Invention Of The Assembly Line
Introduction:
The degree of engineering production has substantially increased over the last one hundred years.
There exists numerous reasons why the world has been able to progress so quickly in the last one
hundred years than the few thousand years before. The main answer lies in the invention of the
assembly line. Prior to the assembly line, production rate was dependent on the precision of
specific parts for an item and a worker s ability to assemble the specific parts together. The
assembly line eliminated the idea of a worker who must be trained to build every part of a
machine or item. Instead, the assembly line focused more on small independent jobs for lesser
trained employees. With the assembly line, an employee would ... Show more content on

Henry Ford introduced his Model T in 1908, which astounded the public due to its simplicity and
reliability, according to History.com. While the Model T was inexpensive, Ford didn t find his
product to be as inexpensive as he wanted. Ford challenged himself to find a way to make his
dream of supplying the whole nation with affordable cars a reality. Ford realized that he must
change his methods of production in order to decrease the price of his automobiles. His
invention of the assembly line actually started before the Model T came out, but Ford did not
know it at the time. The Model N was built prior to the Model T. The workers on the Model N
automobiles placed the parts in order along the floor while the under construction auto was on
skids and moved down the line. The workers placed their respective parts on the machine as it
passed by. For the Model T, Ford tried to make his process even better. He broke the assembly
process into 84 small steps. On top of this, workers were trained for only one of the 84 steps. By
having a machine that could make interchangeable parts faster than any human, the process
accelerated quickly and there was no shortage on supplies. With the combination of the new parts
machine, line of workers trained per step, and an order of parts, the assembly line was born.
Figure 1 below shows the wheels and hubcaps of Model T cars being assembled using the assembly
line. The excessive amounts

Analysis Of Wembley Stadium Project Management
A project is a temporary endeavour that creates a unique result. Time, budget, resources, and
performance specifications, to meet requirements made by stakeholders, limit a project (Project
Management Institute, 2013, pg.3). Project management is the application of tools, techniques, and
knowledge to help achieve the three main constraints of scope, cost and time (Project Management
Institute, 2013, pg.5). This applies managerial process and gives project managers the
opportunity to make a project successful. However, there are still numbers of project failures
both big and small projects. This failure does not only affect finances but also demoralizes
employees who have laboured diligently to complete the work. The case of Wembley Stadium
project failure will be analyzed in this paper to illustrate project management difficulties a project
can encounter if appropriate tools and techniques are not successfully developed, implemented,
and evaluated within the project management processes. The major problems concerning the
Wembley Stadium project were scope, time, cost, quality, and stakeholder issues (Carter, 2002).
However, this paper would be focusing on scope, time and cost issues. The format of this paper
will include the project analysis, which will provide brief description of the Wembley stadium
project, and main reasons why the project failed. This will be followed by the analysis of how the
issue of the project failure is related to project management knowledge

The Four Main Types Of Radiological And Nuclear Terrorism
Describe the four main types of radiological and nuclear terrorism (25 points). The four main
types of radiological and nuclear terrorism are Chemical, Biological, Radiological and nuclear
(CBRN) attacks. These types of attacks can have deadly consequences and significantly impact a
country if an attack is carried out. Not only can causality rates be high, but there can also be
significant economic consequences as well. Chemical attacks involve the use of chemical agents
that are man made gases, liquids, or powders that can have incapacitating or lethal effects on
humans. Most chemical weapons fall into five broad categories: blister, nerve, choking, blood, and
incapacitating (Forest Howard, 2013). Chemical agents will vary in their degree of potency and
volatility. Depending on how volatile or potent the agent is, the stronger the effects of agent will be
on humans. Biological weapon attacks involve the intentional release of a pathogen or bio toxin
against humans, animals, or plants (Forest Howard, 2013, pg. 113). Similar to chemical attacks,
biological attacks can cause, death, illness, and societal disruption. Additionally, these attacks can
cause widespread economic damage by poisoning agriculture crops and livestock. Biological attacks
can be carried out by dispersing the pathogen through aerosol mechanisms, food and water supplies,
and infected animals. A radiological attack is the intentional spreading of radioactive material with
the intent to do

Essay on New London Eminent Domain
Justice Stevens believes that is it the right of the government for taking land from private owners
under eminent domain and using that land for public use. Steven believes that eminent domain is
constitutional as long as the public welfare is increased such as increasing tax and other revenues
and stimulating a troubled city. New London was an economically insufficient city compared to the
averages in Connecticut. He believed that making the city more attractive was making good use of
the Takings Clause in the U.S. Constitution. He also thinks that the city carefully constructed a plan

Although both agree that in some instances eminent domain is appropriate, they disagree on this
particular case of the New London community. Before I began to read this case I made my own
assumptions about eminent domain. Although I believe that it is not alright for eminent
domain to be applied to all cases, I do believe that eminent domain is necessary in this case. The
city was very apparently deteriorating and it is part of the cities job to make the community
appealing again. Like it was stated, the population has not been as low as 24,000 residents since
1920. That was over 50 years ago. I may not always agree with using eminent domain in all

good use of property. Just compensation is something I may have a problem with. From what I

Justice Should Not Be A Solution
Justice Is Up To Us From the very beginning, people have fought. Rather it be over food, shelter,
land, or money, these disagreements have remained ever present in our societies. Where there is
disagreement, there must eventually be a solution. Most of the time this solution can come from the
individual, or individuals, involved in the disagreement. When necessary, a third, impartial party is
to step in and fairly decide what is to happen. Out of all the commotion, no one ever stops to think,
What do I want to happen here, or better yet, How do I want this to happen? In a country christened
land of the free, home of the proud, it is appropriate to assume that everyone gets a fair trial, that
everyone is treated equally in the eyes of the law, and that the government does everything in its
power to protect the innocent and prosecute the bad guys. But that s not exactly the way things
work in America. In the land of the free, home of the proud, the court rooms continue to be
influenced by personal prejudice and the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill continue to
remain unrepresented. In efforts to better the nation, the principle of the nation must be upheld and
the values of America must be preserved. Throughout the history of America, prosecution has
persisted. From the moment that white men arrived, confrontation over the ownership of other
humans has existed. Some saw this ownership as fair, others did not. It wasn t until after many

Peruvian Economic System
2.1. Ecosystem Services in the Peruvian Andes
Nowadays, worldwide economy has behaved in a very explosive and surprising manner. Specially
in developing countries, the local economy has faced a great challenge for the people towards
globalization. In South America, Peru is a traditional country trying to fit its customs and
techniques in agriculture with the fixed and aggressive markets of the world. According to Javier
Escobal and Denice Cavero (2014), Peruvian national statistics indicate that the country has
experienced persistent economic expansion recently (annual growth averaging over 5% during the
last 15 years). However, poverty has not been reduced, specially in rural areas, where it affects two
of every three inhabitants. Commonly, people within this marginal regions, have practiced

A. E. Housman s Poem For An Athlete Dying Young
Forever Young
James Wattersmith once said, live life to its fullest or it may seem like you died young (1). A.E.
Housman s poem, For an Athlete Dying Young is a moving tribute to those affected by the death
of someone who has died young and the noticable difference that is left when they are gone, but
also that they are remembered for the remarkable things they have done. The poem is also
symbolic for athletes and the sadness they feel when their old age makes them have to quit the
game they love so much. Housman uses imagery, word choice, and symbolism to deliver a sad but
powerfully emotional poem that expresses the feelings experienced when an individual dies young
but also the sadness endured by some athletes as they grow old.

Housman uses comparisons and symbols to help the reader to understand the situation to
accomplish the goal of fully expressing the theme of remembrance and longing. The narrator recalls
a time when Shoulder high we bring you home, / And set you at your threshold down, / Townsman
of a stiller town (lines 6 8). The narrator seems to be relating the time when, in excitement and
jubilation of the athlete s win, they carried him home in glory. Line 8 suggests that perhaps being
townsman of a stiller town means that he has passed on and the townsman carried the athlete home
and placed the athlete at the threshold in death. The threshold is symbolic of the transition from
worldly glory the athlete was experiencing, to the heavenly glory the athlete now realizes. The
athlete has passes on and is now the townsman of a town much stiller than the one the athlete once
knew suggesting that the athlete is now becoming acquainted with a new heavenly town . Line 8,
while being the first indication that the athlete has died, also gives calming reassurance that the
athlete is in a better, more tranquil place. A.E. Housman continues to use symbolism, when in lines
11 12 the narrator says that the athlete like the laurel grows / [And] withers quicker than the rose .
Housman uses the laurel bush to symbolize how the athlete has grown quickly, but has also died
just as fast. Housman may not be suggesting that the

The Issue Of Abortion And Abortion
Abortion is one of the most debatable and controversial issues that exists in our society. An
abortion is a medical procedure that terminates a pregnancy before 24 weeks. People who call
themselves Pro Life feel that it is the government s responsibility to preserve all life, regardless of
concerns for the pregnant woman s health, or for the quality of the life of the child. The Pro Choice
argument feels that a woman should have the choice when it comes to what they wish to do with
their own reproductive organs.
There s many arguments regarding abortions. One of many is that adoption is a viable alternative
to abortion. This statement implies that the only reason a woman would want to get an abortion is
to avoid raising a child, and that isn t the case. Depending on the circumstances, the mere act of
having a child in a hospital can cost between $3,000 and $37,000 in the United States. Giving birth
is dangerous, too: In the United States, pregnancy complications are the sixth most common cause
of death for women between the ages of 20 and 34.
Another misconception often thought about abortions is If a woman has sex, she has to pay the
consequences. Too many women have abortions for their own convenience or on impulse. Pro
Life activists leave no room for the grey area, which is unfair. Did you know over 2 thirds of
women who have abortions were on birth control or using protection. And what about the women
who are abstinent but were raped or victim to incest. I believe

Essay On The Riddle 7
The riddle 7 of the Exeter book portrays a swan s life through its movements using verbal
variations, antithesis and various other literary devices. the riddle describes a bird s passage from

garments and its habits. The next few lines emphasise on the creature s flight as it flies over homes
of men. At last, the birdsings out clear and transforms into a travelling spirit. In addition, the riddle,
focuses on the swan s versatility and its relationship with man. Exeter riddles are known to have a

The swan has its own habitat and is comfortable enough to interact with the human occupied land.
Throughout the riddle there are continuous mentions of the mute swan s feathers. In lines 6 and
7, the swan s feathers sing a melody as compared to when they were silent in line 1. According to
a certain old myth, it was believed that swans, particularly silent creatures, sing the most beautiful
melody just before dying. The use of traveling spirit helps solidify the idea of the swan singing the
most beautiful melody and soon dying. This aspect of the swan s life cycle will further be
discussed below.
The striking antithesis of silence and sound in the riddle 7 is one of the most significant features
as it draws the reader s attention of how the mute swan transforms from a cygnet to an adult swan.
In fact, from the opening line itself Hrægl min swigað, the riddle establishes the contrast between
the two. In addition, the riddle utilizes four alliterative verbs swД«gaГ°, swЕЌgaГ°, singaГ°,
swinsiaГ° which creates a heavy parallelism in midst of the contrast. This adds a rhythmic and
alliterative pattern in the riddle, giving it more unity and direction. Furthermore, the rhythmic
repetition of the sw sound may imitate the sound of the bird s wings during flight. The sw sound
can be considered a clue left for the audiences to identify the bird species in the riddle. The

Goffman Stigma
Goffman s work Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity (1968) shows how people
want to conform to the social norm by being normal and how this want leads to feelings of
exclusion and the sense of a social stigma. Goffman describes stigmatization as building a
difference. While the stranger is present before us, evidence can arise of his possessing an
attribute that makes him different from others in the category of persons available for him to be,
and of a less desirable kinds in the extreme, a personwho is quite thoroughly bad, or dangerous, or
weak. He is thus reduced in our minds from a whole and usual person to a tainted, discounted one.
Such an attribute is a stigma, especially when its discrediting effects is vey extensive; sometimes
it is also called a failing, a shortcoming, a handicap (p. 12). This shows that the rejection from
society to a person is a social stigma. Many students with disabilities are not considered normal,
which gives with a social stigma. Having this stigma encourages conformity. Without a society,
there isn t a social stigma. This solidifies the fact that stigmas emerge from social relationships. The
theory doesn t care about the qualities and/or disabilities of the person, the theory only cares about
making these qualities different by another party (Scholarly Writers Who Use English as an

Abolitionist Movements And Social Reforms
During the eighteenth century, the opposition to slavery prior to forming the United States became
increasingly stronger between the Northern and Southern territories. Prior to the 1830s, antislavery
societies began to emerge from every corner to challenge the slave system and to help combat
slavery. During this time, people had different ideas about how to confront the issue of slaveryin the
system and how to establish a freedom of oppression. In the eighteenth century, antislavery political
activists believed the slave system would able to be changed through peaceful political reforms,
while others felt that real change could only be achieved by violence. A radical white abolitionist
named John Brown became a historical figure whose beliefs motivated the violent abolitionist
crusade.
In the 1830s, antislavery underwent an important transformation which led to various abolitionist
movements and social reforms. The American Association Organization provided a program which
taught information about the gradual emancipation of slaves and exportation of the free to
colonies outside the U.S. In January 1831, William Loyd Garrison a successful writer played a
vital role in the initiation of the abolitionist crusade after he published the first issue, The Liberator,
which brought awareness of the importance of slavery emancipation. The issue not only helped to
give awareness to the issue of slavery, but it aided in the motivation of the abolitionist movements.

How Dangerous Is Salt Water for Our Kidneys
Our bodies, specifically the kidneys, have the amazing ability to conserve or get rid of water when
needed through two key mechanisms. These two important players are the the loop of Henle in the
nephron and the anti diuretic hormone (ADH) that is secreted by the pituitary gland of our
endocrine system. Our renal and endocrine systems are always working together to maintain
homeostasis and keep the ions and other substances inside our body balanced, but coping with
extremely high amounts of sodium is challenging and hard on our bodies. Although consuming a
very small amount of saltwater will not kill you, drinking large quantities of saltwater is never to
be advised. The structure of the loop of Henlein the nephronhas the ability to either filter out or
keep ions within the loop. First, the dilute filtrate goes through the glomerulus of the nephron
where it is losing water, glucose, hormones, and other ions in the proximal convoluted tubule. It
travels down the descending limb of the loop which is only permeable to water. Water is
reabsorbed out passively leaving the filtrate extremely concentrated with sodium and chloride ions.
The filtrate then travels back up the ascending limb which is permeable to ions and not to water.
The sodium and chloride ions are filtered out and absorbed actively at this stage. By the time the
filtrate reaches the distal convoluted tubule, it is dilute again. It then travels down the collecting
duct. It concentrates the sodium and chloride out

Copernicus And The First Pioneers Of Science
With each new development in science comes conflict, mostly from those who don t believe that
science follows the teachings of their religion or allies with their beliefs in an almighty power or
God. Looking back in history at some of the great names in human scientific achievement, such as
Copernicus, Galileo, and Darwin, we see that with each genius discovery came some outcry from
religious groups. Nikolaus Copernicus was one of the first pioneers of science. Until 1540 science
had long been a servant of the Christian religion, but Copernicus brought about change, and with
that change came persecution. Copernicus work, although not immediately and widely accepted,
lead directly to the undermining of centuries of assumption and superstition. He was the first to
state that not only was the earth not the center of the universe, but it also orbited the sun. Later in
history came Galileo who brought Copernicus ideas to practical fruition. He was also on the
receiving end of much religious persecution, even to the point of living out his last years under
house arrest, forbidden from writing and publishing. Then in the 1800 s Charles Darwin researched
and published revolutionary biology books on the theoryof evolution, his most widely known
book being The Origin of Species . Even today, long after his death, his works receive much
religious debate; religion today is no more apt at dealing with scientific theory than it was
hundreds of years ago; this is because it is a

Looking at my background as a student from Indonesia writing and knowing that English is not my
first language makes me unconfident about myself, and I had a problem mainly in structuring my
sentence and grammar. When I first came to De Anza I did not have any confidence about my
writing, and after I took the placement test I was placed in EWRT 211 and I took it this summer.
The first day I came to the class, I felt so frightened that I could not do well in the essays and
could not catch up with other students because of the fast pace in summer session. However,
after I took EWRT 211 with Prof. Mary Diehl and as I wrote couple of essays I become more
confident about myself as a writer. After working in each essayI got assigned on, and learning
about how to be a better writer, and I am feeling positive and very confident going to EWRT 1A.
In my first out of class essay What is So Important About Appearance? , I learned many new skills
that I ve never learned before. The most helpful thing that I learned from this essay is about comma
splices. Before knowing what a comma splice is I made silly mistakes such as forgetting to use the
FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). For example most people do not really care about what
we are wearing, maybe some people do care . In this sentence I should use one of the FANBOYS
and after the comma. However, after doing some reading and rewrites now I have the ability to
avoid comma splices. For

Analysis of Mattel vs Hasbro
Mattel vs Hasbro
Mattel:
History:
Mattel was founded in 1945 by Matt Matson and Elliot and Ruth Handler as a picture frame
manufacturing company. The name Mattel was derived from a combination of the two names, Matt
and Elliot. They operated out of a garage in Southern California. Handler then recognized an
opportunity and began to manufacture dollhouse furniture with scrap material from the picture
frame business. Matson quickly sold out to the Handlers who then changed the focus of the
business to toys. In 1955 Mattel changed the way toy companies advertise. Up until this point, toy
manufacturers relied on retailers to showcase and sell their ... Show more content on

segment is then divided into 3 categories:
1. Mattel Girls and Boys Brands, US. This includes the Barbie line, Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels,
WWE, etc.
2. Fisher Price Brands, US. This includes the Fisher Price brand, Dora the Explorer, Power Wheels,
etc.
3. American Girl Brands. Including the American Girl Doll brand and Bitty Baby.
The International segment sells products from all categories except for American Girl Doll brands.
They are not available overseas.
Internationalization:
Mattel prides itself on their ability to bring play to children around the world. International business
represents more than 50% of gross revenues for many of their key brands. To grow these markets,
they concentrate on investing in infrastructure, building brand awareness, and establishing their
brands as the aspirational brands in the market. Currently they market 80% of their products
globally. Only 20% are geared to individual country markets. When they launch a new global
product, it is done simultaneously in many countries. For example,

Sieve Analysis Test Lab Report
INTRODUCTION Aggregate is one of the basic constituents of concrete. Its quality is of
considerable importance because about three quarter of the volume of concrete is occupied by
aggregates. One of the physical properties of aggregate that influence the property of concrete is
the grading of aggregate. The grading of aggregate defines the proportions of particles of different
size in the aggregate. The grading of fine (size lt; 5 mm) and coarse (size gt; 5 mm) aggregates are
generally required to be within the limits specified in BS 882: 1992. OBJECTIVE The objective
of this experiment is to obtain the grading curve for both fine and coarse aggregate. APPARATUS

4. The sample was placed on the top sieve and the sieves was agitated by mechanical sieve shaker
for a sufficient period so that after completion, not more than one percent by weight of the
residue on any individual sieve will pass that sieve. 5. The weight of each size increment was
determined by weighing the residue contained on each sieve. This has be done in a cumulative
fashion by starting with the smallest, particles in the bottom pan. After this weight has been
determined, the next larger particles was added into the same pan and the cumulative weight
was determined. Coarse Aggregate 1. A representative sample was chosen by quartering (according
to BS 812: Part 102: 1984) or by use of a sample splitter (Fig. 2C1 3). The sample to be tested
should be the approximate weight desired when dry. For this experiment, about 3 kilograms of
coarse aggregate was weighed. 2. The procedure no. 2 to 5 was repeated as stated for fine aggregate
using appropriate sieve size. DATA AND ANALYSIS A. Fine aggregate sample weight : 500g

The Journey Of Reconciliation And The Freedom Rides
In the books, A Nation Forged in War: How World War II Taught Americans to Get Along by
Thomas Bruscino and Freedom s Main Line: The Journey of Reconciliation and the Freedom
Rides by Derek Charles Catsam, both focus on the subject of racism, religious tolerance, and
segregation. Although both books deal with the same topic the authors have different opinions
toward what was the cause of the beginning of bringing these matters to an end. These are a few
of the reasons the authors give for their opinions on the subject. Throughout A Nation Forged in
War Thomas Bruscino states his belief that the rise of ethnic tolerance was due to military service
during World War II. His first piece of evidence he uses for this claim is that the... Show more

They listened to hearts, checked feet, examined buttocks, and took urine specimens. Although many
men felt this process was a horrible event that stripped them of their dignity it did have the positive
outcome of bringing these men of different ethnicities and religions together. In Freedom s Main
Line, Derek Catsam argues that the most important battle for civl rights was segregated
transportation. The first piece of evidence Catsam provides for this statement is that segregated
transportation sparked the beginning of the freedom riders. The Freedom Riders were a group of
civil rights activists who would ride interstate buses into the segregated southern United States
beginning in 1961. Their reason for beginning this act was to challenge the lack of enforcement of
the United States Supreme Court s decision that segregated buses were unconstitutional. Another
piece of evidence he details is the numerous amounts of cases brought to the supreme court due to
segregated transportation, some of the cases being Brown v. Board, Morgan v. Virginia, and
Boynton v. Virginia. The Brown v. Board case was a landmark United States Supreme court case in
which the court established state laws declaring that separate public schools for white and black
students was unconstitutional. The Morgan v. Virginia case was a major United States Supreme
Court case that

The Use Of Symbolism In Paul s Case By Willa Cather
One of the finest forms of writing is the use of symbolism. This representation allows readers to
signify an object, person, situation or word with a feeling or idea. Symbolism is an illustration of
speech that is used when an author wants to form a certain mood or emotion. Readers find stories
easier to associate with when there is a symbolin which is relatable and a multiple uses of conflict
for attention grabbers. An example of symbolic imagery could be a bald eagle that represents
freedom to the United States. In literature, an author utilizes figures of speech, like metaphors and
allegory to explain the symbols being used.
In her story Paul s Case, Willa Cather provides a short story full of lies and defeat. The story takes
place firstly in Pittsburgh and later to New York, where a young man named Paul goes through life
feeling hopeless and fragile. Cather begins the story with Paul meeting his teachers in the
principles office while wearing a red carnation. To the teachers, the red carnation was not properly
significant of the contrite spirit befitting a boy under the ban of suspension (90). Through this
initial statement, analysis can be extended to include the story s frequent references to other
flowers, which also symbolize Paul s desires and mirror his disconnection from the world
(Crabtree). Cather s tone throughout the story is dry, factual, and a bit awkward. However, the
frequency of the awkward tone engulfs the reader and mandates constant attention

The Role Of European Imperialism In Africa

Imperialism is a policy which a strong nation take complete control over other countries . This is
exactly what the Europeans did in several different parts of Africa . Not only did the Europeans
divided and colonized Africabut they took everything away ,from their culture to their
independence. Why take all this away ? It s simple , the Europeans nations was competing against
each other and they thought they were superior. They noticed Africa had many raw materials and
resources they could use and benefit from. The driving force for imperialismin Africa was

Examples Of Femininity In The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid: Hegemonic Femininity The transition from a girl to a woman is created by
the socially implemented ideals of femininity depicted in commercials, books, and mainly films.
One of the famous animated princess Disney films, The Little Mermaid can be easily added to yet
another Disney film portraying hegemonic femininity. In the 1989 film The Little Mermaid(Ron
Clements, John Musker), a beautiful, young mermaid is willing to make a risky deal with an evil
sea witch because she yearns to walk on land and fall in love with a prince, while secretly the sea
witch wishes for the mermaid to lose the deal. Ultimately, mermaid ends up achieving her dream of
marrying the prince although the evil sea witch tries to destroy the plan. Throughout the fantasy

Wandering free, wish I could be part of your world, is what Ariel sings as she daydreams of
prince Eric. She strongly believes she needs him to be happy and that without him she is
incapable of doing so. That is why Ariel takes Ursula s deal, changes her body and sacrifices her
voice while leaving her family behind. This validates the hegemonic code of femininity because
women are seen as individuals who cannot take care of themselves and are only complete with a
man.
After the climax, when the deal has been made with Ursula, Ariel finds herself in a difficult
situation. With only having three days to get a kiss of true love from prince Eric, she
undoubtedly needs Eric s kiss to save her. Getting close to the end of the film, there is a scene
where Ariel and Eric are taking a boat ride. All the sea creatures try to set the mood so Eric can
kiss Ariel. Without that kiss Ariel will lose her voice forever and her true love. This scene proves
once again how women are incomplete without men, that they need a hero and prince charming to

One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Misogynist Analysis
One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest: A Misunderstood Book
People uphold their sex with pride. Gender roles have shifted throughout the history of the
United States. One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest (by Ken Kesey) was written in the 1960s
(1962), a time when gender roles for men and women were shifting. The book was very
controversial, spawning many claims and accusations; one particular claim being that Kesey
promotes misogyny. This claim misrepresents the book for what it is: a book that treats men and
women in an equal limelight. One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest is not a misogynistic book because
of its equal treatment of both sexes, portrayal of women in power, and mistreatment of men. The
main argument of the opposition is that the book is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are mentally and physically abused and mortified by the antogonist s evil machinations. One
particular example can found at the end of the book, where McMurphy is lobotomized, giving him
a fate worse then death. One of the characters Charles Cheswick kills himself. Nurse Ratched is the
only woman who is actually maimed by a man in the story. Something the opposition fails to
mention is the Japanese nurse in the disturbed ward. She is the only female character in the story
that is benevolent and gentle towards the men. Due to her existence in the story, it also refutes how
the story is sexist or misogynistic, because it displays a women who is fair and modest towards the
protagonists, making the thought of a story with only negative female characters a myth. One Flew
Over the Cuckoo s Nest is not sexist towards women due to its equal treatment of characters,
reprsentation of strong women, and divesting of men. Ken Kesey ws simply telling a story
reflecting his experience in the psychiatric ward. The theme of Cuckoo s Nest isn t to promote
anything; if anything, it promotes equality for all men and women and their struggles throughout
society, fighting for what they believe

Basal Metabolic Rate
The Basal Metabolic Rate is essentially a measure of the required amount of energy needed to
maintain bodily function while at rest. The most significant requirements that BMR energy needs
meet are in processes such as establishing and maintaining a normal breathing pattern, heartbeat,
blood circulation and temperature. The primary factors influencing BMR include age, gender,
musclecomposition, hormonal levels, exercise levels and many more. It is important to recognize
that an individual s BMR is not static and many of the above factors can affect the utilization of
energyeither positively or negatively. For example, men on average have higher BMRs when
compared to women simply due to an increased amount of muscle mass. While it may seem... Show

Interestingly, this study also found that expenditure while asleep was significantly greater during
the luteal phase than during the menstrual and follicular phases which is a direct correlation to an
increase in progesterone. As a result of this study, it was concluded that fluctuations of hormones
throughout the menstrual cycle significantly affects energy expenditure, notably during sleep, but

observed when measuring energy expenditure and BMR over a 24 hour

Plato s Views On Democracy
In The Republic of Plato, Plato, in addition to sharing his views on justice, shares his views on
democracy using a fictionalized Socrates to outline the most pressing issues. Plato s views on
democracy are negative; he believes democracy to be bred from a response to inequality of wealth
and to heighten all of humanities worst traits. Platobelieves democracyleads to unequipped leaders
who hold offices and power without the necessary traits and preparation.
The main issue Plato has with democracy, as outlined in The Republicof Plato, is democracy has a
uniquely level playing field for all and that this leads to people working toward endeavors that
do not suit their best abilities, which goes against Plato s own image of justice as Plato s image
holds to the idea that justice is primarily found in the community more so than the individual and
that it is realized on an individual and societal level when people help to advance society by
working toward endeavors that best suit their natural abilities (55). This democratic equality, the
author feels, leads to those who are unequipped and unprepared to rule leading the masses. For
example, Plato utilizes the metaphor of the ship to show this issue of democracy, that many of the
crew, though not equipped to lead, will try to steer to steer the ship and that the struggle will
eventually lead the crew to wreck the ship (195 196).
Plato also associates democracy with tyranny, noting that when freedom is taken to an extreme it

Funeral Decedent Essay
If I owned a funeral home and a family entrusted me with the care and preparation of their loved
one, I would add the decedent s vital and service information via the funeral home s website for
guest. If the decedent was part of a veteran organization and a brief ceremony would be scheduled
during visitation or service hours, the information would be published in a newspaper obituary or
added to an online obituary for those wanting to attend.
If the decedent was part of a fraternal organization and the family wished to have a non sectarian
funeral service, which are similar to military funerals, the funeral director must be advised during
arrangements. The family must provide the DD 214 form, so the funeral home is aware of the
branch the decedent belonged to and could provide a U.S. flag to be draped over the casket
during services. It becomes the funeral professional s responsibility to coordinate the participation
of the various fraternal organizations in a funeral service (NACMS, p. 149). It is important for the
funeral director to work with all the people involved during a veteran s organization funeral rite,
including the clergy, post commander, and family, to make sure everything goes according to plan.
During a fraternal funeral ceremony, the organization is able to provide full military honors, which
might include either a 21 person funeral detail, or 21 one gun ... Show more content on

Yet, unlike many who are clamoring for ungodly salaries in the financial stratosphere, and even refusing to show up to practice if they don t get their huge payday, Duncan has chosen to go the other direction. He took a huge pay cut. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the average NBA player makes $1.5 to 5 million a season, and the lowest paid player on any team makes $500,000. Tim Duncan has had his share of big paydays with some $235 million passing through his hands over the course of his career, and around $130 million still in his pockets. The founders of WestJet Clive Beddoe, Don Bell, Mark Hill, and Tim Morgan successfully established its original headquarters in Calgary, Canada in 1996. Through researchingother successful airlines throughout North America, the founders were highly inspired by the low cost carriers of Southwest Airlines. As a result, the founders contacted David Neeleman, president of Morris Air, which later become apart of Southwest Airlines for help in developing a business plan for WestJet. Those statistics are almost unheard of for a company that just started five years ago. Truth is, there will never be a perfect company. With great success, there s always turbulence along the way, WestJet is far from the perfect company. WestJet s main concern is expanding and if they don t expand, it will give other airlines a chance to enter the market that could hurt the carrier s low cost, low fare, short haul, point to point services of Western Canada. Additionally, the expansion project will make it difficult to keep WestJet s famous culture alive as the company grows on a global scale. Remember, WestJet s strong and outstanding culture was the root of the growing company. WestJet emphasis on the commitment to maintaining the culture, stating a vibrant corporate culture was so central to WestJet s success that preserving it was Bell s and Beddoe s main obsession . It is a problem because if they don t end up expanding outside of Western Canada, new airlines could enter the market and meet the demands of Eastern Canada since WestJet is content with serving Western Canada. Other airlines noticed the success of WestJet and were attempting to mimic WestJet and its strong culture to serve more than just Western Canada. WestJet follows theory Y as their management style, by following this management style they have been able to carry on their operations both effectively and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Choreographer For Pendulum By Nisha Jackson 1.Pendulum The choreographer for Pendulum is Nisha Jackson. This dance had a mood of life, living and the emotional stages throughout life. The music, lighting and costumes helped in the aid of conveying the theme. I believe that the dancers were split up into family like groups because only certain ones wore the same outfits and others had different ones. Also, throughout the dance the groups would each do their own thing, which would point out the differences between people. The connection between our class and the concert was when they all had to do their own different dance parts and interpret what the others were doing. 2.Rememory The choreographer for Rememory is Raquelle Pollock. Rememory had a mood of carrying people along in our memories. This dance poked out the most to me because in the beginning of the dance they dance with no music and they were all in sync. Then the music turned on in the middle of the dance and made it more interesting and then at the end of the performance with maybe a minute left the music turned off again and then they were all in sync again. The lighting was a yellowish color, and their costumes were simple and flowy. The connection between this dance piece and our dance class was when how we all would start in sync with one another, the would be given a few counts to make up our own 8 count of dancing and then we would all become in sync with the same dance again. This happened multiple times throughout the dance, which is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Infinite Jest The U.S.A. of You (MAJOR CONSTRUCTION ZONE) Rooted in a rich speculative backdrop, David Foster Wallace s Infinite Jest is set in O.N.A.N, a interdependent North American state where what is currently known as America, Mexico, and Canada are one. Its acronym may allude to the biblical Onan, signifying this union of nations as a travesty of wasted potential (Hayles 685). It houses a world of cyclical addictions to drugs, overthinking, and entertainment at dangerous costs. Scholar Katherine Hayles has noted that, there is no real inter in this version of Interdependence, only a pretense of hygiene created by the refusal to recognize those parts of oneself which are considered unclean (685). The thought experiment s most common variation proposes that a test subject has the ability to save five people by flipping a switch and having it hit one person instead (Kahane). Another proposal is the footswitch variation, which proposes a test subject has the ability to save five people by pushing one otherwise uninvolved person onto the tracks. While deontology is concerned with whether man has obligation to act in the problem, utilitarianism proposes that the subject should always sacrifice the life of one to save as many as possible. Utilitarianism, despite its seemingly logical appeal, is not psychologically natural for most individuals. One study found that those who make utilitarian decisions in the trolley experiment tend to have decreased sense of responsibility, higher than average levels of testosterone, increased levels of anger, and low levels of serotonin (Duke). Those with high cognitive ability are more likely to be utilitarians, but the mindset is also a consequence of cognitive impairment resulting from inebriation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For me to have a nicely landscaped yard, I would have to cut down trees, and move bushes, and make hills where there are valleys and plant grass where there s dirt.... or so I thought. The thing is, your home improvement project this summer will cost you a lot less money if you work with what your yard already has going for it! So what does this mean? It means, use the natural landscape of your yard to create your home improvement project. Believe it or not, natural and existing landscape in your yard can even give you ideas for what to do as a project. Step 1. First, you should go out and look at your yard. What is the natural landscape? By this, I mean what does your yard look like now? This would include hills, trees, bushes, grass, places where there is just dirt, etc. But, it would also include a pavement that has already been placed in your yard, a garage or shed in your yard, etc. You need to get an idea of everything that is there. Step 2. What is it that you want to do with the yard? What landscape ideas do you have? Think of your dream landscape. Are you looking to create some new paths and walkways? Do you want to have some type of fountain or something with water like a waterfall? Do you want a patio in your new landscape? Do you want a swing? This is where you decide what your home improvement project for the summer might consist of. Step 3. Now, you need to generate some creative ideas for the existing landscape. This is the fun phase. You can come up with an idea, no matter how big or small, expensive or not. If you look at the yard in the picture for this article, it has a small hill/ incline about half way up the yard. At this point in the yard, there is a slope and then the rest of the yard is on higher ground. A great landscaping idea for this would be to do some digging and make the slope upright, and put in a retaining wall the whole way across where the yard goes from one ... A Golden Age Student Name Professor Name Subject Date A Golden Age Less than 30 years after the war of Independence, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (now Pakistan) had grown so further apart, even from the obvious geographical disconnect, that the liberation war of 1971 could be termed as inevitable. For some it was the war of liberation but for many who lost their friends, neighbors and other loved ones, it was a time of selfish loss. Bengal s growing need for an identity, equal and ethnic acceptance and a pride in their mother language eventually led to many conflicts both emotional and political. Having been recently independent from British India, the Two Nation Theory was engraved in everyone s minds. But the geographical division of East and West Pakistan was much more than distance; it was felt as a conspiracy for West Pakistan to govern the entire country (Bose, 1).The war was considered an unnecessary act by some as autonomy was the desired result and not a new country. However as the story of the lives of civilians unfold the distrust and unfairness of the situation in the country is seen to be evident. Perhaps it was this feeling of unequal representation and a desire for provincial autonomy that led to an ever present sense of estrangement. That time was considered the golden age of Bengal and the characters are faced with that piece of history that eventually helped change the map of the world. World of Warcraft is perhaps the best known massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG). These games are incredibly immersive and generally have no real ending, with players able to continue the game indefinitely via expansions and new content being added. A pilot study by Hussain and Griffiths (2009) set out to explore the potential for addictionto an MMORPG, within its psychological and psychosocial effects on players. Generally, studies of MMORPGs have not had a specific focus on addiction or the psychology of on line gaming (as cited in Hussain Griffiths, 2009). At the time of their study, it was estimated that there were five million online gamers worldwide (as cited in Hussain Griffiths, 2009). According to the statistical analysis site Statista, as of 2013 approximately 144.9 million people worldwide are active daily players of online games, an increase of almost 3000 percent. Hussain and Griffiths note that playing an MMORPG can become an escape from a player s real life, and a substitute for the social interactions involved in reality. Therefore, the importance of studying MMORPG s potential for addiction, and research regarding possible pathology, is even more relevant. Hussain and Griffiths explored two hypotheses: (1) assess the impact of online gaming on the lives of gamers, the independent variable being online gaming, the dependent, ... Throughout the poem, words like burning, distant, dread, fearful, deadly, terrors, and tears are used to create a dark tone. Some words and phrases help show the reader the darkness that comes in life. However, in his other poem, The Lamb the author uses words such as delight, softest, bright, tender, and rejoice to create a innocent tone. Gave thee clothing of delight/ Softest clothing wooly and bright (5 6). In using delight and bright the author creates a light tone, and in talking about a sheep, wooly and bright the reader gets the impression of a pure, white sheep. White sheep are a symbol of purity; the tone of these words then become pure. This tone gives the reader an idea of the purity and happier side of life conflicting with the dark tones of Blake s other piece. By having these tones conflict, Blake is showing the readers that life can be pure at times and dark at other times. The dictionary definition defines a man to be an adult human male , and no definite traits are mention. The idea of being the stronger and smarter gender circulates the meaning of being manly, as well as contributes to the characteristics of a hero, in narratives like Platos Apology and Homer s Odyssey these attributes are portrayed to emphasize the conventional features of masculinity. In the Apology, Socrates is being put on trial for corrupting the young and not believing in the gods. Socrates indicates that he is not a professional teacher by stating The fact is that there is nothing in any of these charges; and if you heard anyone say that I try to educate people and charge a fee, there is no truth in that either though I think that it is a fine thing if a manhas the ability to teach, as in the case of Gogrias of Leontini, Prodicus of Ceos, and Hippias of Elis. (Plato 42) Socrates utilizes a sense of logic that appeals to the people of the jury to defend himself from the false accusations of people claiming he is a teacher because only a teacher can teach likewise only a sailor can sail. The workers on the Model N automobiles placed the parts in order along the floor while the under construction auto was on skids and moved down the line. Not only can causality rates be high, but there can also be significant economic consequences as well. An abortion is a medical procedure that terminates a pregnancy before 24 weeks. People who call themselves Pro Life feel that it is the government s responsibility to preserve all life, regardless of concerns for the pregnant woman s health, or for the quality of the life of the child. The Pro Choice argument feels that a woman should have the choice when it comes to what they wish to do with their own reproductive organs. There s many arguments regarding abortions. One of many is that adoption is a viable alternative to abortion. This statement implies that the only reason a woman would want to get an abortion is to avoid raising a child, and that isn t the case. Depending on the circumstances, the mere act of having a child in a hospital can cost between $3,000 and $37,000 in the United States. Giving birth is dangerous, too: In the United States, pregnancy complications are the sixth most common cause of death for women between the ages of 20 and 34. Another misconception often thought about abortions is If a woman has sex, she has to pay the consequences. Too many women have abortions for their own convenience or on impulse. Pro Life activists leave no room for the grey area, which is unfair. Did you know over 2 thirds of women who have abortions were on birth control or using protection. And what about the women who are abstinent but were raped or victim to incest. I believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout the riddle there are continuous mentions of the mute swan s feathers. In lines 6 and 7, the swan s feathers sing a melody as compared to when they were silent in line 1. According to a certain old myth, it was believed that swans, particularly silent creatures, sing the most beautiful melody just before dying. The use of traveling spirit helps solidify the idea of the swan singing the most beautiful melody and soon dying. This aspect of the swan s life cycle will further be discussed below. The striking antithesis of silence and sound in the riddle 7 is one of the most significant features as it draws the reader s attention of how the mute swan transforms from a cygnet to an adult swan. In fact, from the opening line itself Hrægl min swigað, the riddle establishes the contrast between the two. In addition, the riddle utilizes four alliterative verbs swīgað, swōgað, singað, swinsiað which creates a heavy parallelism in midst of the contrast. This adds a rhythmic and alliterative pattern in the riddle, giving it more unity and direction. Furthermore, the rhythmic repetition of the sw sound may imitate the sound of the bird s wings during flight. The sw sound can be considered a clue left for the audiences to identify the bird species in the riddle. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Goffman Stigma Goffman s work Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity (1968) shows how people want to conform to the social norm by being normal and how this want leads to feelings of exclusion and the sense of a social stigma. Goffman describes stigmatization as building a difference. While the stranger is present before us, evidence can arise of his possessing an attribute that makes him different from others in the category of persons available for him to be, and of a less desirable kinds in the extreme, a personwho is quite thoroughly bad, or dangerous, or weak. He is thus reduced in our minds from a whole and usual person to a tainted, discounted one. Such an attribute is a stigma, especially when its discrediting effects is vey extensive; sometimes it is also called a failing, a shortcoming, a handicap (p. 12). This shows that the rejection from society to a person is a social stigma. Many students with disabilities are not considered normal, which gives with a social stigma. Having this stigma encourages conformity. Without a society, there isn t a social stigma. This solidifies the fact that stigmas emerge from social relationships. • 37. Abolitionist Movements And Social Reforms During the eighteenth century, the opposition to slavery prior to forming the United States became increasingly stronger between the Northern and Southern territories. Prior to the 1830s, antislavery societies began to emerge from every corner to challenge the slave system and to help combat slavery. During this time, people had different ideas about how to confront the issue of slaveryin the system and how to establish a freedom of oppression. In the eighteenth century, antislavery political activists believed the slave system would able to be changed through peaceful political reforms, while others felt that real change could only be achieved by violence. A radical white abolitionist named John Brown became a historical figure whose beliefs motivated the violent abolitionist crusade. In the 1830s, antislavery underwent an important transformation which led to various abolitionist movements and social reforms. The American Association Organization provided a program which taught information about the gradual emancipation of slaves and exportation of the free to colonies outside the U.S. In January 1831, William Loyd Garrison a successful writer played a vital role in the initiation of the abolitionist crusade after he published the first issue, The Liberator, which brought awareness of the importance of slavery emancipation. • 38. How Dangerous Is Salt Water for Our Kidneys Our bodies, specifically the kidneys, have the amazing ability to conserve or get rid of water when needed through two key mechanisms. These two important players are the the loop of Henle in the nephron and the anti diuretic hormone (ADH) that is secreted by the pituitary gland of our endocrine system. Our renal and endocrine systems are always working together to maintain homeostasis and keep the ions and other substances inside our body balanced, but coping with extremely high amounts of sodium is challenging and hard on our bodies. Although consuming a very small amount of saltwater will not kill you, drinking large quantities of saltwater is never to be advised. The structure of the loop of Henlein the nephronhas the ability to either filter out or keep ions within the loop. First, the dilute filtrate goes through the glomerulus of the nephron where it is losing water, glucose, hormones, and other ions in the proximal convoluted tubule. It travels down the descending limb of the loop which is only permeable to water. Water is reabsorbed out passively leaving the filtrate extremely concentrated with sodium and chloride ions. The filtrate then travels back up the ascending limb which is permeable to ions and not to water. The sodium and chloride ions are filtered out and absorbed actively at this stage. By the time the filtrate reaches the distal convoluted tubule, it is dilute again. It then travels down the collecting duct. It concentrates the sodium and chloride out ... Copernicus And The First Pioneers Of Science With each new development in science comes conflict, mostly from those who don t believe that science follows the teachings of their religion or allies with their beliefs in an almighty power or God. Looking back in history at some of the great names in human scientific achievement, such as Copernicus, Galileo, and Darwin, we see that with each genius discovery came some outcry from religious groups. Nikolaus Copernicus was one of the first pioneers of science. Until 1540 science had long been a servant of the Christian religion, but Copernicus brought about change, and with that change came persecution. Copernicus work, although not immediately and widely accepted, lead directly to the undermining of centuries of assumption and superstition. He was the first to state that not only was the earth not the center of the universe, but it also orbited the sun. Later in history came Galileo who brought Copernicus ideas to practical fruition. He was also on the receiving end of much religious persecution, even to the point of living out his last years under house arrest, forbidden from writing and publishing. Then in the 1800 s Charles Darwin researched and published revolutionary biology books on the theoryof evolution, his most widely known book being The Origin of Species . Plato s Views On Democracy In The Republic of Plato, Plato, in addition to sharing his views on justice, shares his views on democracy using a fictionalized Socrates to outline the most pressing issues. Plato s views on democracy are negative; he believes democracy to be bred from a response to inequality of wealth and to heighten all of humanities worst traits. Platobelieves democracyleads to unequipped leaders who hold offices and power without the necessary traits and preparation. The main issue Plato has with democracy, as outlined in The Republicof Plato, is democracy has a uniquely level playing field for all and that this leads to people working toward endeavors that do not suit their best abilities, which goes against Plato s own image of justice as Plato s image holds to the idea that justice is primarily found in the community more so than the individual and that it is realized on an individual and societal level when people help to advance society by working toward endeavors that best suit their natural abilities (55). This democratic equality, the author feels, leads to those who are unequipped and unprepared to rule leading the masses. For example, Plato utilizes the metaphor of the ship to show this issue of democracy, that many of the crew, though not equipped to lead, will try to steer to steer the ship and that the struggle will eventually lead the crew to wreck the ship (195 196).
