MOTIVATION
MESSAGE RELAY
The messages are:
• Chinese food is made with sugar
and spice, and lots of rice.
• A dog named Moose ran loose
through the forest chasing a
goose.
• What have you observed?
• What happened with the
message that was relayed?
QUESTIONS TO PONDER
•How important is relaying
the accurate message?
•What conclusions can you
draw from the activity?
GOALS OF THE DAY
• Differentiate the direct and
indirect/reported speech in the given
exercises.
• Formulate reported speeches from
direct statements based on the dialogues.
REPORTED SPEECH
SET A SET B
Helen says, “I am
hungry”
Helen said that she was
hungry.
Lino says, “I am done
eating
Lino said that he was
done eating.
DIRECT SPEECH INDIRECT/ REPORTED SPEECH
What is a reported speech?
It is a way of reporting what
someone has said by
changing some of the words
said, but retaining the same
meaning.
When we narrate someone’s
words we can do it in two
ways. We can use direct
speech with quotation
marks, or we can use
reported speech.
Two kinds of reported speech
Direct Speech- Saying exactly what
someone has said, also referred to
as quoted speech. Here, what a
person says appears within
quotation marks (“…”) and should
be word for word.
“ The youth is the
hope of the
nation “ says Dr.
Jose Rizal.
According to Nelson
Mandela “ Education is
the best tool to fight
against poverty”
Indirect/ Reported Speech-
It does not use quotation
marks to enclose what the
person said and it doesn’t
have to be word for word.
Cardo says that he
wants to treat us to
dinner. Mrs. Ramos told me
last Sunday that
there will be a party
next month.
Things to remember in reporting a
speech
*Quotation marks will be
removed
The use of “that”
•“that” should be kept
after the verbs.
e.g. : The girl complained
that the waiter took long.
The use of Introductory Verbs
• “says” is used for the simple present
tense which shows an action which is
habitual.
• “said” is used for the simple past tense,
which may or may not be used with an
adverb of time.
Examples
• She says the prayer every morning.
• Ana says that she is going to sing.
• Ana says, “I will go to Mars”
• Daffodil said that she went to the
mall yesterday.
• “I am done eating”, said Maria

• Change in time and place
Change in personal pronoun
