Abraham Lincoln said, Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man s
character, give him power. Power can destroy traces of civilization or bring forth civilization; it
can be both a good or bad thing. In William Golding s The Lord of the Flies, the entire island is
power hungry and it is fueled by it. Leaving the boys alone on an island, without any grownups,
left all the power and control in the boys hands, invading the island with anarchy. The boys are
lead from hope to disaster as they attempt to survive in the isolated environment of the island.
Golding s The Lord of the Flies expresses how power influences people s actions, as a major

Early man set up civilizations so future generations could live in peace and survive in their
surroundings. As early man developed civilizations, they contained five characteristics. Three of
the five are complex institutions, specialized workers, and record keeping. Complex institutions
are organizations like government and religious organizations. Specialized workers are people
like teachers, soldiers, and priests. Finally, cuneiform tablets were used in record keeping to
keep track of rules and trade. The characters in Lord of the Flies mirror early man s development
through complex institutions, specialized workers and record keeping. The boys in the novel
Lord of the Flies mirror the development of early man through complex institutions when they
appoint a chief. In the historical fiction novel, Clan of the Cave Bear, the text reads, the leader of
the small clan... (Auel 12). In the Lord of the Flies, after being called to the beach by the conch,
the boys vote for a chief to lead the mass of boys on the island similar to the early man leader
portrayed in Clan of the Cave Bear (Golding 22). The connection between these texts
demonstrates that the boys are going through the same development phase as early man did. In
both Lord of the Flies, and Clan of the Cave Bear, there is a chief, and even more, a complex
